    Proposal for VW/Porsche reorganization

I'm no market guru, just a common-sense kind of a guy... but I think that there's now an excellent opportunity to fix things properly.

In this proposal I am putting aside the trophy brands (Lambo, Bentley and Bugatti, is there another one?), as those aren't really significant - boutiques really. I just look at VW/Audi/Porsche. Until now, model diversification within its brand might be necessary to even out the bottom line of each particular brand. But from now on it does not make any sense, as the 3 brands do contribute directly to the same group/bottom line. Here is what I propose:

1 - VW manufactures small cars and an entry-level SUV.
2 - Audi manufactures medium and large mid-tier and luxury sedans and a luxury SUV.
3 - Porsche manufactures (strictly) sports cars: Boxster/Cayman and 911, and future sports cars TBD.

Also... as in the past, their dealers sell the 3 brands under the same roof.

This eliminates a bunch of silly models:
    * no more Phaeton for VW (maybe not even Passat)
    * Audi no longer sells TTs or R8s (really a modified Lambo)
    * Porsche stops the Cayenne and Panamera nonsense.

    Makes sense doesn't it?

    Re: Proposal for VW/Porsche reorganization

haha you'd think that would be a reasonable solution from both the marketing as well as production perspective.

However, how come VW has in the past already brought out similar models such as the Skoda and Seat, some models that are in direct compelition with VW models..

But, im pretty sure they won't scap the Passat or Audi the TT as they don't do not take away from the other two..

    Sedans its
    1. VW Jetta (bora)
    2. VW Passat
    3. Audi A4
    4. Audi A6
    5. Audi A8
    6. Porsche Panamera

    Coupes
    1. VW Scoricco
    2. VW Eos
    3. Audi TT
    4. Audi A5
    5. Porsche Cayman
    6. Porsche 911

    cabrios
    1. VW Beetle
    2. Audi TT
    3. Porsche Boxster
    4. Audi A5
    5. Porsche 911
    6. Audi R8 (V12 TDI)

    SUVs
    1. VW Touareg
    2. Audi Q5
    4. Audi Q7
    5. Porsche Cayenne
Note: This will mean we won't see babay Porsche SUV

    compact
    1. VW Polo (Lupo)
    2. VW Golf
    3. Audi A3

    Special and Supercar
    Lamborghini models!!

This will bring along nice little things such as more sense in all their options.. They will respresent very segment and cover most all price ranges, which is essential to success!!

    my $.02

    Re: Proposal for VW/Porsche reorganization

I forgot about Seat and Skoda... I suspect those are at the VW econo-box level and probably sell regionally in Europe.

I do not care much about what they do in Europe. They probably will have to deal with their regional idiosyncrasies.

Actually, the Seat and Skoda offer very quality cars, often even more so than VW. The first-gen Seat Leon, for example, had the same interior as the Audi A3 (actually even better materials, upon examining them side-by-side) and Skoda has been known to produce qualiy and reliable cars since its VAG takeover. But yes, they all compete with each other.

    Re: Proposal for VW/Porsche reorganization

I would rather make 3 cars that all compete with each other and have a 30% market share than only have 1 car in each level and have a 20% market share...

I'm not sure that the math is quite right there, as there are duplicate costs. But in any case, that may make sense from a business/shareholder's perspective, but it is not the best approach to develop best-of-breed in each category, as you are competing with yourself.

They're usually the same car, only with different sheet metal.

    Re: Proposal for VW/Porsche reorganization

    I would simplify it.

I believe strongly that a company the size of Porsche/VW could have a sport car division that is dedicated to making only sport cars. They could share technology continuing to produce the 911, R8, R10 and Boxster/Cayman. The sharing of information and specialization focused solely on building sport cars would send a strong message as to the direction of that division.

That would be fine with me. But it won't happen.

    Re: Proposal for VW/Porsche reorganization

    Porsche makes sports cars

Audi compete head on with MB/BMW with executive sedans, sports sedans, GT cars

    Bentley stays where it is

    same for Bugatti

Lambo keep making mid engine cars. Leaving the other configs to Porsche

SEAT could move a little up market and slot under Audi, SEAT sure sounded more expensive than VW

VW would be beneath SEAT and sells nothing more expensive than say US40k, it would keep it's name and tradition intact as a el-cheap people's car,

Skoda is the odd man out, maybe sell it?

    Re: Proposal for VW/Porsche reorganization

You guys forgot to jettison the Cayman. The Boxster is OK, it's a roadster, good for easy summer driving, but the Cayman? RIP.

I disagree. The Cayman is a Boxster with a hardtop and a very useful hatchback. Keep it! Put there the CS engine (this CS and future CS generations).
