    997S Polished Wheels

Has anyone had any experience with polishing or chrome plating the standard 19 inch S wheels? I am changing tires and it would be a good time to make the wheels shiney. Has anyone done this? Does it last? The wheels I've seen (chrome plated) look great, any comments?

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

no since it is vulgar in my opinion

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

Gonna be costly is my guess because the intricate recesses of the wheel will probably require a custom-made copper rack for the electroplating process. Also will require lots of hand labor ($$$) on a polishing wheel to get bare alloy of wheel clean and prepped for plating process.

Probably cheaper to buy new ones already chromed.

    Just guessing... .

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

This treatment of wheels is fairly common here in California for years the Fuchs wheels have been plated or polished, you see them quite often.
I have been quoted $900 to chrome plate all four 997S wheels just wondered if anyone had done that. They really do look quite good.

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

    It looks awful IMHO

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

Might be easier to try a set of Fikse forged aluminum wheels. The look shiny and are fairly easy to keep that way. Nice uptick from chrome and lighter as well to benefit acceleration, handling, etc.

Yes, perhaps..., I like to give the old stuff more leeway maybe.

I figure anything (optional or standard) that came from the factory back in those "golden years" looks good.

Back then the "purists" were in charge. In some cases, (maybe the chrome wheels?) the driver cars took some of their visual characteristics from the race cars.

Just think it's neat where the ideas came from "back then" as to how the driver's cars should look.

Today it's completely different; i.e. where the "look" comes from.

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

I had no idea that this would elicit such strong responses. It is just that I have two sets of 997 S wheels and tires and it would be easy and fun to be able to change the car's looks just by swaping wheel sets.
How do the members here feel about having my second set of wheels painted Black?

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

Well, the response is due to the fact that the chrome-your-wheels thing is a "California thing"... Each time I visit California, it's practically HUMOROUS how saturated the roads are with chromies.

Me? I'm not altogether against it, but it's a SUBJECTIVE thing... Dresses some cars up nicely, but cheapens others..

I'm afraid that chroming your Porsche wheels would be the latter. Going "poser" with a Porsche never looks cool, it kinda ranks up there with adding a mongo aftermarket whale-tail and getting a vinyl strip across your windshield that says "Porsche'd Ya.."

I actually did do a California chrome wheel exchange on one of my past vehicles 7 years ago... And I thought it looked great. But it wasn't a high-end and classy-as-it-sits Porsche, it was my silver 2000 SVT Lightning truck. The silver on the truck matched the silver on the wheels, making it rather monotone and dull... The chrome wheels fit it's hot-rod personality, and set it off nicely. It handled them well... And then I did a little custom paint on the hood... You can have that kind of fun with a muscle truck, but when you're doing a Porsche, restraint is a virtue...

Doing chromes on a 911 is kinda like setting out lawn gnomes in the front yard of a chic estate, or mounting a flying swan hood ornament onto the nose of your car... It would cheapen the car IMHO, and it's such a cliche' out there anyhow...

I've gotta get a pic of my old Lightning up here... You guys might be giggling, but man, it was sharp...

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

O.K., here ya go, I confess, I owned chrome wheels... And my truck would have considered the comment "vulgar" to be a compliment!! It ran low-13's, pulled a car trailer like a champ, and seriously confused many a Porsche owner on interstate on-ramps!

Haha! Nah..., My guess is we're just habitually burning thru brain cells in hobby mode.

Black wheels are cool IM_H_O if they refer back to the original Fuchs wheels. All black is different. PIC:

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

It is VERY subjective. I happen to like the chrome wheel look on my black 997s. But i also like blacked out wheels on the same car. I did a chrome (exchange) on my s wheels about a year ago at LA Wheel and Tire in CA, - they sell on eBay. The chromed wheels really set off the black and the wheels are easier to clean. They were about $600 exchange, but they will charge for "bent"exchanged wheels. Anyways, my opinion.

I think a lot of this comes from proximity to Porsches...where I live they are called Malibu Chevys when I venture out on the Pacific Coast Hwy it is impossible not to see numerious Porsche cars in all levels of trim. The desire to have your car a little different is irresistable. If only to tell your car from the others in the supermarket parking lot.

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

Yeah, but if your desire is to be a little different, isn't chroming your wheels the "march of the lemmings" in Caly?

And I know I risk offending summoboy, but it's just my opinion is all... Leave the chrome wheels exchanges for Trans Ams and Camaros...

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

No offence here, actually wheels are an easy way to personalize a car, as you can just bolt the stock ones back on and make it look factory again.

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

You would be better off having the wheels polished. There are issues with chrome wheels. One problem is that the inevitable minor damage cannot be repaired, one ding or scrape and the wheel has to be replated.

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

When Californians order nondestinctive color cars (e.g., black or silver) their only alternative to make a statement about individuality is by addressing that with their wheels. Chrome seems to be the flavor of the times in that region. I personally have more European taste and can't imagine chroming my wheels. If you wanted them easier to clean order the PCCB!

    Re: 997S Polished Wheels

I recently noticed that on the Porsche website "build your Porsche" that numerious color painted wheels are offered by the factory. Does anyone have pictures of any of these offerings?
