    Intermediate shaft failure...

    Well, this morning on the way to work I was a stoplight and all of a sudden it sounded like a bunch of rocks were tumbling through the engine and the car shut down. It would not restart and I pushed over to side of the road into a parking lot. Porsche roadside service picked it up and took it to the local dealer. They won't be able to get a good look until tomorrow, but the initial thought from my dealer is an intermediate shaft failure. He said this would mean a new engine at no cost to me. By the way, it's a '05 C2S with 18,000 mi. I'm kinda bummed. Also, there are no engine/mechanical mods.

    Yes this is a known problem since the water cooled engines were introduced(996 onwards). It is not definite what % of cars it affects. Not related to driving style, maintenace etc. I've heard that the base of the shaft is badly designed and prone to failure on some engines.
    A friend had the same problem on a 996 C4S when the car was 3 1/2 years old and Porsche replaced the engine for free incl. free labour, even though it was out of warranty.

    Yup. Sounds familiar to me too.

    I have an acquaintance who was freaked one day since his BoxsterS just "self-destructed." Later found out it was the intermediate shaft. Luckily he had the extended warrenty (which I had earlier helped convinced him to buy). New short block from Porsche. I.e, just the mechanical "core" onto which all the other original engine parts are bolted before installation.

    Dealer and even PCA agree, changing out and engine and having unmatching numbers is NOT a problem. In the car's later years it's almost expected. Just means car will never win the ultimate concours award thirty years from now.

    Relax and try to think of it this way: you got 18K "free" miles on the crankcase.



    OH! Forgot to mention that _same_ engine also had an RMS leak a few years after he bought it in 2002 or 2003 !!! WOW!

    I hope that you never missed a shift. I never did, but if I did, I kind of figured that they would be sticking me with the $20 K invoice, for their bum Intermediate Shaft.
