Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

Guys, as I heard Porsche will install a modifyed (adapted GUI) VW Navigation in there cars after this summer break. The VW touchscreen is build and developed together with Siemens VDO called RN 510 and comes with:

    - 30GB harddrive for maps and MP3s
    - SD Slot for updates and MP3s
    - Highspeed Processor

This makes sence to me and would really lift the level of IT in our cars to state of the art again.

    cheers, L@rs

That is good news! It would be nice if it also has video inputs for track cams.

Lets hope they update the insturments also!

Re: Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

The VW takeover is paying dividends at last!

Re: Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

    Really good news

And how much does all this "IT" weigh? I hope it is optional...

    +1
Besides when if ever has Porsche's "IT" been "state of the art"...remember it wasn't until the mid-90's that they installed the "state of the art" cup-holder in their cars...

Re: Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

i think it could be retrofit

Re: Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

YAY! Finally some "Excellence" for the mass of buttons, knobs and gauges on our front center console might be on the way.

OTOH, maybe I've grown kind of fond of the look our front center console currently approximates:

Re: Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

Hey... that big wart thing in the middle looks just like the timer thing that comes with the Sport Chrono pack... Hmm I smell a rat...

Re: Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

That looks like an old Range Rover! That speedo should stop at 60...

Sorry, to disappoint you but the RNS 510 will not find its way into any Porsche soon. My sources say that the PCM3 in the 997 facelift will still come from Becker. And that makes sense to me. I know the CAN networking/display protocols that the RNS 510 uses to communicate with other control units. They differ from the protocols/protocol versions Porsche is using. Furthermore, the Cayenne uses different protocols than in Porsche's sports cars and different protocols than in the facelifted Touareg that has the RNS 510. So, there would be much more necessary than just a GUI update to get the RNS 510 working in a Porsche. Becker has already done the job in their PCM2 to interface with both Cayenne and sports cars. So, why let a new manufacturer do the same job again?
Besides, when the 997 facelift hits the market the RNS 510 will be more than a year old, surely with its successor just around the corner...

    @Ewi:

This makes sence a lot! I just told what I heard.

Lets wait and see - soon we will know more!

Re: Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

While browsing PFF (German Porsche Fan Forum) I came across a nice PDF from Harman-Becker that leaves no doubt that the PCM3 still is from Becker.
    >> Link to Harman-Becker PDF document <<
Look at page 7. Even the next PCM3.1 update is already presented there.
What makes me nervous though is the fact that Becker never has had so many SOPs in so little time. Chances are quite good that the first buyers will be used as beta testers for a buggy PCM3

Isn't Becker the unit in the Ferrari ? most 612s &430s end up changing the whole unit

The system is alright, it's the speakers that suck in a Ferrari.

Re: Facelift will get touchscreen Navi from VW

    3.1 next year?
