New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

Okay, wife has given me the go ahead to buy the Porsche 911 (isn't it sad how many posts have that caveat?). I have a couple questions. First should I do it? I have never even driven in one. I just love the looks of the car. I have two young children. Wife is getting a new Range Rover Sport next month, I could get another for myself, perhaps more practical. I pick the kids 3 & 1 up from day care every day. It is only a mile from my home, can I put car seats in the back? If I get one it has to be a cabriolet. I am thinking of either a used from 05' up to a new 08'. I really don't want to spend more than 80k for it and it to have less than 10k miles on the car. Can I use the car as an every day drive to work vehicle? I have another Land Rover which I could keep for bad weather, but I want to get rid of it. Also I do not have a garage on my current home. New home in the next year or so will have a garage. I read some posts about rain issues. No garage, no Porsche? Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Even don't do it!

Look for a used 2005 996 Turbo S Cabriolet, it has rear seats for the kids-trust me, they'll love the turbo boost when it kicks in, especially when they are 2-3 years older-all wheel drive which helps for inclement weather, the Turbo S will have all the basic sporty luxury appointments you will need, fantastic brakes for street driving-ceramic composite or PCCB-and will not break down if you park it outdoors. Oh, and if you feel it's a bit underpowered, well, there's room to "tweak" it a bit.

Re: New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

I also completely second Turbo Al's opinion. I've always been in love with the Turbo S' for a while now, and I think you could probably get one for a good price.

Re: New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

Oh thanks, didn't even think about a turbo. But that car is beautiful!!! I thought they were out of my price range?

It's true, it will be hard to find one for less than $80K. Most 2005 996 TScab's will fetch $90K-110K. I bought my 993TT used from Porsche of Roslyn in your backyard, and I had a good experience. I just browsed their website and they have two 2005 996 TSCab's listed, both asking around $109K:

Select "Make" (Porsche), and "Model Description" (Turbo S Cabriolet). Bring your wife and kids to the dealer and you will all fall for the car:

Re: New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

Here's the short answer IM_H_O; very pertinent to today's economic situation.

Prospective high-perf-luxury-car buyers should look at their debt load. If you have significant debt do not buy a Porsche; looks bad and can be embarassing.

Like my dad used to say to us: "Never buy luxury items on credit."

No garage? Not good. Too much computer/electronics to put at risk. Other car mfgrs make thousands more cars and have ironed out the bugs of climatic adversity. Some early 997s got terrifying and recurrent system faults after getting _washed_ in the driveway on sunny days.

Re: New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

    MMD's advice is spot on.

I also add... drive one first. Perhaps you like it, perhaps you don't. Many people dream about a sports car but change their mind when they try them.

I personally would not pick an 11 to shuttle kids around, but that's me. I would not have a high-dollar value car without a proper garage.

Re: New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

Yeah Roslyn has had a few cars I am interested in. Problem with going over 80k is I am buying the Range Rover Sport(wifes's car) and the Porsche outright. And I really, really have a hard time spending more than 140k. I know it is a weak complaint, but it still hurts (psychologically) paying that much for cars in one year. I think, buy two Honda civic hybrids and I get a free (sort of) ski condo in the northeast...Of course that is when I am thinking rationally!

Re: New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

Ok debt load not an issue. Car is being bought cash no credit needed. Rain on the other hand is. If you take debt out of the equation, what do you think? I do not have a garage at present so it will be exposed to the weather. At least a year till I upgrade to my new home.

Kid shuttle I don't think is that big. I have another landrover I could keep for kid shuttling. It is more a question of if I am picking up my kids can I in the porsche? Since it is only a mile. But what about the garage issue?

Re: New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

No..., sorry. Kids in those back seats has GOT to be a "special occasion" kind of thing.

How do I know this? When I have to stuff my bag and carry on back there I dread it; the car gets _crowded_ very fast. Kids always have stuff with them: where's it going to go? Sometimes I pick my wife up from various functions she goes to, there's always the BS of where to put all the stuff she always seems to have with her.

Again, I can't imagine using the car in a way which fills up the back seats and then some on a routine basis. But that's just me, I'm not used to having people (kids) and stuff crowding me in. Throwing everybody's stuff in a trunk and having four doors..., I have no problem with that.

I'm very sorry for the "downer" POV.

Re: New or Used??? What to do??? Kids too???

IMO keep the landrover, get a cover for the first year and go for it.

Re: New or Used??? Lease or buy??

Ok, I have made the decision Porsche it is! I am going to keep our old Discovery as the back up car if I need to drive the kids anywhere. I clocked day care to my house, it is 1.1 miles, I could just go home switch cars and get the kids. I also rationalized that with gas prices skyrocketing, the Range Rover was a waste of money. Ok, I am admittedly looking for an excuse, but still I do hate paying 100 bucks to fill up my car every week. Wife is getting her RR Sport anyway soooooo..... Going to the dealership on Sunday to take a 911 for a drive and start the process. So, I am still on the fence about the new or used thing. I could do a new coupe without pushing my psychological threshold of 85k, but I really want the conv. Suggestions? I think leasing may not be right for me, but I wanted to hear if anyone had a different view on it. I plan on keeping the car for three to five years. I am planning on buying the car outright. But, I was wondering if in three years or so if I want to get a new one does the car retain more value as a trade in or if I just leased? Or, which is more realistic and honestly more likely, I will have to get a sedan or another SUV, with having older bigger kids, I may just have to sell it anyway (or hide it from my wife somewhere!). I went to the Porsche website and did a three year 12k mile lease for 54,000 total payments. I also wanted to know what to expect about the negotiation in the dealership. I have looked at cars.com and carsdirect and they both basically list the MSRP price as the price of the vehilce. What should I expect when it comes to haggling over the price of the car? I was planning on going to about 4 or 5 dealerships to compare pricing.

Oh, sorry for the length of my posts, but thanks for the advice that you folks have given me. I hope to have my car by April

Re: New or Used??? Lease or buy??

...wait until you at least have a garage, oh and preferably a house... and an alternative everday kid pickup vehicle...when ididnt my wife delighted in picking up our 2 kids in the porsche, the crappier and muddier the weather the better....detail 2hrs... f-up 5min... the more warranty you can get the happier your marriage will be....go for it you only live once
