Up Hill, Sixth Gear, 1900RPM, 48 mph! Wow.

Had an uphill grade today (not sure how to quantify it). Threw the TT into sixth to see what would happen. Did 1900 rpms and 50 (48? 49?) mph.

Car has zero trouble sustaining speed, no huffing and no puffing.

Just a possible reminder that alot of us guys are probably cruising with waaaay too many RPM. The engine has alot of torque.

Is this true? Our cars have six gears just to go fast around a track; to put power down onto road at a maximum rate using engine's output curve the the max.

Otherwise there's no "need" to row thru all the gears on the street. For example you can go from first to third to sixth on a freeway entrance: no problem. I often skip second gear in getting around the neighborhood!

Yes, I discovered this a long time ago; but today it amazed me again.

    Thoughts, corrections, clarifications welcome.

Re: Up Hill, Sixth Gear, 1900RPM, 48 mph! Wow.

The 6 gears are not optimized for the track. Usually, only 1st through 4th are used on most tracks. The higher gears are for top speed claims.

Re: Up Hill, Sixth Gear, 1900RPM, 48 mph! Wow.

How many miles do you have on your car? Isn't this lugging the engine?

I agree, it is also not good to lug the engine, IE. apply a very open throttle position combined with low RPMs and an inappropriately low gear.

The turbo is a torque monster though. Smooth power delivery across the whole range of RPM is it's forte.

Most tracks you only use gears 2-4~ I rarely if every go back into first.

Re: Up Hill, Sixth Gear, 1900RPM, 48 mph! Wow.

FWIW, my E46 M3 has SMG. In auto mode its computer will engage 6th gear and let RPMs drop below 2000 at about 50 mph. Different HP/Tq yes, but still "insanely" low RPM.

Re: Up Hill, Sixth Gear, 1900RPM, 48 mph! Wow.

I too have an E46M3 SMG, I drive in automatic 99% of the time.

When you say it lets you drop to a low RPM it must be in one of the lower modes.

Whenever you apply more throttle though, the computer will downshift. So I guess that answers your question.

Hehe! _Zero_ shame in that! I love it. The car starts out as a docile, compliant, _comfortable_ commuter and..., when conditions improve..., a monster is released.

Not unlike our Turbos, huh?! Life is good.

Re: Up Hill, Sixth Gear, 1900RPM, 48 mph! Wow.

Lugging the engine is not good. Puts a lot of uneccessary strain and load on engine and drivetrain components. On flat land, it's not so bad (slap yourself on the wrist), but going uphill and lugging is a no-no (Mutombo finger wave).

That said, turbo engines operate better under a little load. I forget the exact engineering reasons why, but such is the reason why they almost feel a little bit stronger when going uphill.

Re: Up Hill, Sixth Gear, 1900RPM, 48 mph! Wow.

MMD and Moogle, seems like its a very common combination, M3s and 911s. Seems like a natural progression. I just could not justify keeping both.

M3 is the closest thing to a Carrera with four real seats. Actually the contrasting roominess of the BMW is a great relief sometimes. The 911 is more of a sports car for sure, BUT when driving on public roads you can't complain about the M3's handling/perf (i.e. can't drive either car to it's limits).

Too bad the new M3 (400+hp V8) is sooooo messed up looks wise. Gonna take me a while to warm up to them.

    How do you define lugging?

How about: accelarating in an higher gear (not 1st) from extremely low rpm ? Typical behaviour of a guy we Germans call "schaltfaul" (shift-lazy)

The definition of what extremely low rpms are certainly varies from engine to engine (displacement/turbo/Diesel etc.), but the 1,900 rpm mentioned by MMD shouldn't be a problem at all for the 997 TT anyway.

Exactly my thoughts. Lugging should appear around (or even below) idle and is usually accompanied by vibrations. At this state of operation, especially on older models, the oil supply could become critical. Still MMD is far from that...

Even for the Turbo that depends on the actual load, road inclination and such. Heck, my C6 runs perfectly on 6th gear around 1500RPM at 65MPH, but, if the road tilts up, I would not floor it, without downshifting.
