    Charmed by a boxster

I have previously owned a 997 S cab and 4S cab. While the 4S was in for some cosmetic surgery a few months back I was given a 2.7 boxster loaner for the day and was very impressed, no very very impressed with a gem of a car for less than half the price of my C4S cab. I've now sold my C4S cab and taken delivery of an F430 which sits well along side my M3 family car. I am missing a cab and spring is approaching so I was thinking of buying another Carrera S but went for a test drive in the Boxster S yesterday. What a car. Not quite as quick as the 997 but so balanced, feelsome and very entertaining. I prefer the looks of the 997 but do like the drive of the boxster S. So my thoughts are either a used boxster to assess whether I really like it over the C2S cab or a new RS60 spyder with PCCB. Taking away the 911 snob factor I struggle to find a reason to pick a 997 cab over the boxster other than looks. Am I missing something (apart from financial common sense)?

The boxster really doesn't do it for me in the looks department but I put driving pleasure way above looks when choosing cars.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

    Maybe even skip the PCCB?

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

I've heard much about unsprung mass and how that improves the handling / ride that I'd like to give it a try.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

It seems like you are on different plane from me financially. I would say get the RS60 if you like the color combo. Otherwise a regular S would be fine.

You might have a hard time getting an RS60 with PCCB (or any 987 for that matter). I would skip the brakes and just order up some nice light 18s (Fiske CCW or ??) While its true the unsprung mass reduction is significant with PCCB, pound for pound lighter wheels are going to make a bigger diff as light wheels ROTATIONAL INERTIA saving are more significant than brake disks. Also some folks say the PCCBs are a little hard to live with on the street (noise and cold performance)

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

Thanks, I've not heard that there were much gains to be had from changing rims before.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

I completed the Boxster Plus test drive at the bumpy Llandow race circuit in S.Wales - i drove a variety of cars ont he day, including 2 S models, one with steel brakes and one with PCCB - i can't honestly say i noticed any difference in the suspension reaction speed/compliance in favour of PCCB. What was obvious was that with PASM in sport mode in both cars there was a lack of traction in the bumpy hard braking area for the last chicane - normal mode had no issues under braking.

I nearly bought a PCCB equipped car from OPC Reading - the sales guy talked me out of it with his comment of Pounds5.5k option when new, deduct Pounds7-8k for resale !

Bear in mind the facelift and DFI engines will be here in September - maybe not an issue with your financial situation, but there will be improvements to engine BHP, maybe 30bhp more !

Then again the RS60 is a nice spec'd car, and if it have the spec you'd go for anyway then represents reasonable value in a Porsche - ditto the Sport Edition models.

When you are sat inside the Boxtser you can't see the outside of it, so just imagine its a 997 body

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

Know what you mean about the looks... have an S myself, from the front I love it, looks great but from the side just looks a little odd... BUT, it drives so well.

Honestly, If I was you I would place an order now for one of the first facelifted cars with the DFI engine and in the short term pick up an 06 car to tide you over.

That way if you decide 2 months down the road that you cant stand the looks of the car you can swap out to a 997 cab without taking the hit of new car depreciation.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

    Get a 430 spyder

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

Will the Boxster also have a new engine in September? I thought it was just the 997...

The FL Boxster with DFI engines should hit the showrooms some (three ?) months after the 997 FL.

@ Pink Panther: you're not the first 997 owner detecting the 987 driving fun by chance (loaner from Porsche Center)
As you mention the upcoming Spring I guess you don't want to wait until the 987 FL will be available - hence RichJ's proposal sounds reasonable to me If your plan is to buy a new (pre facelift) car right now and maybe replace the car with the FL version next year, the RS60 might be a good idea (if you like the colour combos offered for the RS60).

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

Some great advice - thanks. I do like the RS60 colour combo as seen on the Porsche web site. I am told I can see it in the flesh on Saturday and maybe have the showroom model I am not desperate to have extra power as the appeal of the boxster to me is that I can use all it's power more frequently making the car even more fun. The F430 has all the power I need to scare me silly. The boxster provides the fun at lower speeds and I can cruise round the Lake district with my wife in it (she wont get in the F430).

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

One of the two dealers in my area told me that the facelifted cars were delayed until 2010. I was surprised to hear this and I am not sure what to believe now. I think he may have been wrong. Does anyone know for a fact that it will be out as a 2009 model ? I will consider the a purchase of the updated look.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

Noone knows for sure as to when the Facelift model will be out, but best guess is within 3 months of the release of the facelift, which is expected early Fall of 2008. So my guess, is late '08.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

The 997 facelift has been delayed due to good sales.

The 987 has recieved various special editions (Orange/RS60) and the cayman gets the Porsche design edition 1.

These will probably hold things down for 6-8 months before a facelift debuts.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

UK September deliveries have been confirmed by at least one OPC as being facelift - ie after the summer shutdown/retooling period.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

I hope you are correct. I would like to look at getting a new Boxster or Cayman in late 2009 or 2010. We will see. I am also thinking about European Delivery which sounds like a real blast!!!

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

Pink: I own a 997S Cab and a Boxster. Both are different cars and I love both. I have always loved the balance of the Boxster, Something a rear engined car cant duplicate. Daily, I prefer the 997 and the engine response. Only real neg on the Boxster is the lack of interior room.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

    Hi Sobe911,

Owning both must be interesting as they are pretty similar. I've always tried to pick complimentary cars for different purposes rather than just picking the ones I like the most.

Why do you prefer the 997 for daily drive? Is it automatic? Is your daily drive in traffic or long distance? Which do you pick for an hour of mad fun? Which would you want to take to the track? Would you pick the 997 to take your new date out to dinner or make first impressions count at that next business networking meeting?

Which do you plan to keep the longest?

Sorry I can't think of anymore questions to ask

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

Pink: When I sold my 996 a few years back and purchased a BMW 750 I felt the need for a Porsche ( Hello 2006 Boxster ). I then fell in love with the 997 and had to have one. Other half wanted to keep the Boxster so we became a 2 Porsche family. For handling, I prefer the Boxster..Just feels tighter. I would track the Boxster before the 997. As a daily driver, I prefer the 997. Its just more comfortable with the added roof and rear seat space. Both are Manuals. I keep my cars 2-3 years and will replace the Boxster with a new Audi S5 soon. As for the first date...(most) Girls only know the badge on the hood so it does not matter which one you drive...BIZ networking is another story.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

Thanks for your reply. Hope you enjoy your S5 when it comes - great looking car.

    Re: Charmed by a boxster

S5 should be a wonderful car. Looking forward to it. Then I will have a better balance in the driveway. BTW, a perfect Porsche would be a Boxster / Cayman with 400 hp....
