    Goodbye Paul Frere

    A sad day indeed...

    ------

    Porsche mourns Paul Frère

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart mourns a great journalist
and racing driver: Paul Frère has died at the age of 91. Anton Hunger,
Porsche's Head of Press and Public Relations, paid tribute to the deceased:
"Paul Frère lived life at racing speed. Whether as an engineer, a race
driver or a journalist, he was a man who commanded the widespread
admiration of the international motoring scene. With his passing, Porsche
loses a connoisseur of many years, who actively accompanied the enterprise
and its products from their beginnings right up to the present day."

A Belgian citizen, Paul Frère was born in 1917 in the French town of Le
Havre. He made his way into motor sport in the late 1940s and subsequently
drove for various different teams. He started for the first time for
Porsche in 1953 with Richard von Frankenberg in a Porsche 550 Spyder at Le
Mans, where he gained a best of class victory. In the 1958 Le Mans,
together with Edgar Barth in a Porsche 718 RSK, he finished in fourth place
overall, besides winning best of class in the category up to 1500 cubic
    centimeters.

In parallel to his career as a racing driver, in 1945 he began a career in
freelance journalism and was much in demand as an expert worldwide. Paul
Frère continued his activities as a journalist and test driver to a ripe
old age and wrote various books on automobiles, including the "Porsche 911
Story", a standard work which is in print to this day. An enthusiastic
aficionado of the sports cars from Zuffenhausen, he was still driving his
first Porsche - a 356 - as well as an Indian red 911 Carrera in the last
    years of his life.

    Very Sad Day Indeed

The guy was a living legend: an amazing driver, great journalist, all round car enthusiast, and an absolute gentleman.

He will be very sorely missed by anyone with a drop of 0W-40 in their veins.

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

Well said. Right up there with Jenkinson and Setright.

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

Today is a sad day for motor sports and the automotive world. Paul Frère was the last survivor of the gentlemen driver era. He will be sorely missed.

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

It is definitely a very sad day. I enjoyed very much his articles in Flat 6 Magazine and his in depth knowledge of the 911 and Porsche's race cars.

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

A sad day. He will be missed. I still use his book The 911 Story as my main reference. And a gentleman.

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

Nearly every month I was reading his chronique in Flat 6 magazine..... His knowledge and opinion will be missed......

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

I really enjoyed his contributions to Road and Track magazine and agree that this is a sad day for motorsports.

    Godspeed Paul.

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

Very sad to hear of his passing. I will truly miss his astute analyses of automobiles, especially his Porsche 911 story updates. His "Sports Car and Competition Driving" remains a great read for those wanting to know the whys and what to do's of sports car and competition driving. He was always meticulous and accurate in his detailed analyses.

    echo these sentiments...

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

Godspeed Paul. I enjoyed his articles and books...

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

Paul was a great driver, and journalist. He really understood performance and race driving, and was able to relay some of those techniques to mere mortals. He was a true Porsche friend.......We will all miss you.

    Re: Very Sad Day Indeed

Paul Frère was a great P-car connoisseur. He drove them all and liked most of them. He liked the 996 C4 but did not like the C4S - he wrote about the 996C4S "looks and no go." I loved his articles. RIP.

    Re: Goodbye Paul Frere

Just read this post and I am shocked.

I discovered him and his articles when I was very young so he had great influence on my automotive education.

    RIP.

    Re: Goodbye Paul Frere

I am slow on the uptake. I am going to reflect on his career and accomplishments.

    Re: Goodbye Paul Frere

Wow, what a sad day it is. I grew up reading his work and he will surely be missed. I always thought how cool it was to see him continue to test cars for R&T at such an age. He surely lived a full life.

R.I.P. Paul, and thanks for the memories.

    Re: Goodbye Paul Frere

I grew up reading his aumototive reviews. Sad day...
