Regarding editions(NOT facelift! This is the first facelift for Gallardo) I agree with you. Too many of them...
I probably saw the same pics as Rami and IMHO new Gallardo will polarize opinions. If you like Murci LP640 you will love Gallardo LP550. On the other hand if you like original Gallardo or Audi R8 you may find new LP550 little bit too much...
Another problem is that almost the same engine(5.2L V10 FSI high reving) will go also into the new R8 V10(presentation Paris 2008) with just 30hp less(520hp). That R8 V10 will cost Euro 50K less then Gallardo LP550...
If I remember correctly:
- Gallardo launched towards 2003
- 2005 came major hardware upgrade, including revised 520-hp engine, on the SE and then on regular Gallardo. No cosmetic changes but nevertheless can be considered as "Gallardo "2.0" IMHO.
- In the meantime appears ceramic brakes.
- 2007 came Gallardo SL.
Not to mention new clutch to better accomodate F1-type gearbox as well as continuous refinement of egear.
I personally do not have any particular problems with that and I am not surprised, given the fierce competition in this segment and the V.W. resources at disposal.
Besides 5 years ago Lambo's reputation was not considered on par with that of Porsche and Ferrari, and to some extend it may still be true today for the people not in the know (similar to Audi with BMW and Mercedes), so they had to push very hard and they still do.
Anyway, I would rather have major sheer technical updates every 2 years than measured mid-life cycle facelifts, partly driven by marketing, as seen by Porsche.
Also, what would make the choice between LP550 and V10-equiped Audi R8 even harder is the anticipated DSG for the latter, dual-clutch transmission being the future even for sportscars (cf. BMW M3 and Porsche's PDK).
P.S: Love the look of the car !
