So the shop recommends the full nose, mirrors and wheel arches for my 612... Any opinion? The car is coming out of its first real paint correction to heal 28k miles of road use...

    Re: Paint protection film

That's a good recommendation. If you plan to keep the car long, you might consider the hood as well.

Just do the whole car otherwise different parts of the car will inevitably look different in all your California sunshine.

    Gnil:

I touched up a few of the main chips using a pin .  Not always sure it is better to do so then to leave it as it is . Some of my touch up' s are not ' flat ' . The paint give a slight bump . Is that any better then leaving a small white hole ?

No its not. The only way to deal with this situation is a proper front hood/nose respray. However, I think you are replacing it with the .2  - correct? In that case when you trade it in the dealer will price in a front respray.

    Re: Paint protection film

Anyone know how easy it is to clean the rubber/tar marks you get from tracking off PPF?  It's easy to clean off paint, but those clear protectors on the rear wheel arches are a sod to get clean.

Hood was part of full nose.. Full car seems overkill.

    Re: Paint protection film

Don't think it makes much difference to touch up or not.  Depending on the situation, you'll either be penalised for touching up, or for having stone chips..  I figured at least if I touch up carefully, it looks better in the meantime.

I have a love hate relationship with PPF. To be honest I would rather not have it as I love to run my hands over a properly waxed car, but with all the carbon on cars now and especially  with triple layer paints or flat black  it makes sense but I still miss the naked metal. i eventually got to the point that if you are going to do it then just go the whole hog.

My dealer always puts film on the front bumper, front fenders and hood. Seems to be sufficient from what I can tell. Probably not 100% OK if you track your car often.

The issue with partial ppf is that it will be noticeable at some point.

The edges where the film is have a lot of dust and it makes the car having multiple color in sun light.

I am 100% like crayphil, I prefer original paint color and feeling but my brain is telling me if you keep it like this, you will damage it badly.

How do they deal with the angles where you do your wrapping ?  At the place I looked they told me that they can't cover the angles . They have to cut the film ( for example on the side mirror ) into smaller pieces

Yes, the dealer would ..but he did not want a trade in and advised to me sell it myself first . If I don't manage he will take it back at the end of the season

Wing mirrors etc always end up with a line on them I am afraid - another thing that bugs me when I am driving the car - but you learn to live with it! On the Singer it was much easier to go over all the panels, remove the lights, and bumpers etc so that no lines showed. However, on modern angular cars that is much tougher (e.g. Lamborghinis), but the 911 shape is generally easier.

I would still get the respray done, any discerning buyer if you sell it privately will notice the pin based touch ups or discount the price.

I would just touch the chips in the best I can. Gnil could end up with a poor paint job from a body shop thus opening a can of worms and maybe even threatening his RS.2 allocation.

Try touching in with a cotton ear bud. Damp the cotton bud, twist it in your fingers to compact the cotton around its stick, then apply a small amount of paint to it and the dab it on the chip. Don't over load the cotton with paint, think too many do this.

Not on my car...Suzuka Grey...almost white, hides the film pretty well. Probably depends on the color of the car.

The edges where the film is have a lot of dust and it makes the car having multiple color in sun light.

Again, not on mine (maybe again because of the color...). You can slightly see the "edges" of the film right before the roof starts but you really need to look very carefully.

I am 100% like crayphil, I prefer original paint color and feeling but my brain is telling me if you keep it like this, you will damage it badly.

I think a good film works very well with any color.

Did a full wrap with mine and very happy with the outcome.

Anyone who does a large volume of luxury/sports cars will have a digital file of the film shape for a specific car. The who and where is more important than the brand of the film.

    Re: Paint protection film

that is part of the requirement to proceed with a guy. he should have a ploter to avoid any wild cut straight on the car which could left very bad cutter mark when you decide to remove it.

also to note, if you remove the ppf and you have decals, there is a risk to replace them as the ppf could damage them...on the good side, ppf is warranted usually for 10 years.

Exactly, you beat me to it. It is really important to get an installer that doesn't cut the film on the car, especially carbon panels ! I've seen some terrible scoring marks made from bad installations on cars, and the damage it can do to carbon panels doesn't bear thinking about. My installer told me of a MC12 that he had to do an evaluation on because of damage by poor fitting from another installer. The damage ran into thousands !

I've had PPF film on my GT3 for 8 years now and apart from a little yellowing it's good stuff (The tech has moved on they claim to prevent yellowing, but i'm not completely convinced) You can gently machine polish and wax film. The only issue with it can be bugs like wasps can stain the film, but eventually even they fade with the sun on them.

    Re: Paint protection film

Quick feedback on the latest version of Xpel Ultimate called  Ultimate Plus;  it is great indecision

-the PPF was installed on top of my stripes and on top of the rear fenders protection (reason is I didn't want to take the risk to damage them as side stripes are installed underneath the fender protection )

-The windshield protection is also really nice and not really visible while driving (day or night time) and provide a good protection on track against debris. I was not really convince about a plastic foil just in front of my vision but the result is OK.

-I put some ceramic coat on the wheels and it works very well...kiss no brake dust cooks and sits as you usually see, it is easily wiped...very good advice from the PPF installer.

I will try to post some pics to document my explanation.

    Re: Paint protection film

I have an incoming GT3.2 RS being delivered soon. I’ve been reading all of your advice here, thanks everyone for the great advice and information. Car will be in GT Silver and I’m considering a PPF Wrap to the front. My main concern is where to get it done. Who does it and the methods they use would appear to be the biggest consideration for a great job. I live in Zurich, Switzerland and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for places around here. My Porsche dealer says they can fit the PPF but I’m just wondering if that’s my best option to leave it to them or seek out a better alternative? I should find out more about this service they offer this week. But before they get back to me I wanted to explore the other options.

    Re: Paint protection film

I would let the Porsche dealer do it.The most convenient solution and if anything f'ks up your dealer is responsible. No risk of ping pong between you, the dealer and a third party about who is responsible for what if anything goes wrong.

    Congrats on the RS wink

Smiley Porsche dealers usually have their out-of-house contractors who do these jobs and they have experience with them and know how good (or bad) they are. It may cost a few bucks more if the Porsche dealer gets involved but in the end, the quality will very likely be OK or even superb.

    Re: Paint protection film

every time i buy a new car i'm undecided if to ppf it or not...and i go not every times.

my first fear is the cutter...ppf is cutted with plotter but also refined on the body with a cutter?

second fear is the difference of the colour of the paint when in future the ppf will be removed(if will be)

third.. conseguence of second, ppf all the car or only the front? in my mind i will prefer all the car,but this will cause more fear (first point cutter)  hahahaindecision

    Re: Paint protection film

Thanks guys for the responses. Yep I see your point about the Porsche dealer being responsible to ensure the result is good and only use quality contractors. They said they have another car being done this week so will contact me to see it and to speak  about the process.

I have some long trips planned and holiday time with the RS so would be happier with at least the frontal PPF protection during this time of covering big distances and getting through the break in period. Completely share the same doubts though with regards to the application process and long term look of the color of the paint and the result of eventually taking it off.

I went front with the .1, it was not good because you could notice the difference in tone while you were closer. For me the front was done by the dealer for the .1 and I went to a specialist shop for the .2 angry

if the PPF (respectable brand like Xpel for instance) is cut directly from the ploter then you have nothing to fear  regarding cutter. kiss

I have the ppf on top of stickers and on top of rear protection on fenders and it is not ugly at all and will protect the overall package. I went that way because I don't want to remove stickers and destroy them and putting them underneath will avoid fading apparently.
