    hatch-back it is

    Re: hatch-back it is

I know these are only spy pics but my word that is one ugly car

    Re: hatch-back it is

Thanks for the pictures, but was there ever any doubt that it was going to be a hatchback?

Yes, gonna be hard to look at when it comes out, but maybe we can get used to it faster.

Unlike the messy situation at BMW:

Well, everyone was saying that this is just a spy pix and it's not a real hatchback......
But I guess they had to make a use of Cayman's extra hatchback in the bin .

    Re: hatch-back it is

    Hm, no Auto-Close button??

With all this testdriving pictures it just came to my mind that this is really a NEW car for porsche in a long time -- they are building the 911 for over 40 years now, then there's the Boxster, which is not so different IMHO apart from the engine's location... then there's the Carrera GT which was basically some kind of Le Mans race car -- and the Cayenne, which is a tuned VW Touareg.

So, the Panamera is the first really new Porsche for ages!!

    Could be interesting...

Is it? If the Cayenne is a tuned Touareg (and I'm not saying it is not), couldn't the Panamera be an updated Phaeton? or a tuned version of some future VW sedan?

I was thinking exactly the same.

    The only logical explanation.

    Re: hatch-back it is

Panamara, its either an attempt by Porsche to build a hatchback that doesnt rattle on day one or they are closet Saab fans. Wait, Their chief designer is from Saab!

And could they have searched any harder to find a cheaper looking rear wiper?

I should order one in Yellow, put Scuderia shields on it, a F e r r a r i badge on the back and park it across the street from Ferrari North America Headquarters as a "How Not To" example.

Remember this is a test mule, the actual option is $2500 .

    Re: hatch-back it is

I just don't get this hatchback bashing to be honest. The hatchback Porsche has been around since the mid 70's with the 924 which had one, the 944, the 928 (which some people on this board seem to think was the pinnacle of Porsche design), the 968, the 996 and 997 targa's, the Cayenne and last but by no means least the Cayman. It seems to me that the hatchback has been pretty much a regular feature of design for half the Company's life

Jim, please do. After they signed off the 612 and gave the ok to the frontal styling of the 599 they need as much help as they can get on the styling front.

    It was.

The hatchback is really useful, but that is about the only good thing I see on this car. Not too much camo on it either, EXCEPT for those bank vault side doors.

Does everyone think that is camo, cause if it is, then the mag pics in the other thread look spot on.

    Re: hatch-back it is

My God, this is a disgrace to Porsche, who approved production of this Godzila type vehicle. It can't get any uglier, can it?

    Re: hatch-back it is

Hey racerx. Thought you'd pop up if I mentioned the 928. Those Auto Zeitung pics of the photoshopped green car are pretty spot on I suspect with the exception of the rear lights which are set into an angular recess. The shape of the recess can clearly be seen on the pics Porsche released of the hybrid drivetrain model.

Lol yeah the side are incredibly thick, I have no idea what the deal is with such thick doors.

    Re: hatch-back it is

I don't think it will look too bad when the camo is removed and the details emerge.

    Re: hatch-back it is

The thing with the camo'ed cars is that they have been painted in dull colours and had cladding strategically placed so that there is no reflection of light off the surface that most people need to see to appreciate a shape. Just look at the difference of the "undisguised" magazine pics to see what a difference light reflection off a surface makes to the human eye. It's the very reason designers spend huge aounts of time playing around with surface swage lines on prototypes to find the best compromise between aerodynamics, light reflection, surface tension and production feasability. It's a very fine balance to achieve and can either emphasise or hide a car's bulk. I think a lot of people who are slating this model based upon the test mules are going to seriously change their views when the real car is unveiled and high quality photo's start appearing.

    Re: hatch-back it is

We have got to give Porsche props for covering the car up really good and creating one of the most strange looking test mules man has ever seen. The fake graphic on the tail lights takes the price.

Spot on! Further more, Porsche does not need to fear competition for now, so whoever will buy this car will have to wait anyhow.

I get the feeling that the car's proportions will be rather unique, especially considering its size. The panels do not give much away, in fact they are purposefully placed not to hide the design details, as they usually do, but the car's packaging. In terms of proportions, only a few millimeters can make the difference. Porsche design has always been about proportions, not about obsolete graphics or fashionable styling themes. Need an example? For instance, the 911's packaging is far from appealing. The long front and rear overhangs do not contribute to its beauty, the clever design does. Equipped with similiarly protruding camoflage this car would not look appealing either.

    Re: hatch-back it is

There's so much false paneling on this car (especially from behind the center pillar to the rear)that it looks like Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor!

    Re: hatch-back it is

Also remember the Cayenne, when the first pics came out, people canceled their order because it was ugly. But in the flesh the Cayenne was great, and they sold tons of them.

It is incredible that people here say straight out from CAMO PICS that they don't like it. Just wait.

That's right, but when the Cayenne came out, we were right at the beginning of the SUV-hype, at least here in Europe. I don't see such a hype for a big saloon with heavy weight but not so much interior space.

But you're right, let's just wait a little longer and see.

    Re: hatch-back it is

It may well be a hatch, but it looks like a high, and comparitively small, load area - 4 up blast across Europe is going to struggle to fit the luggage....

    Re: hatch-back it is

These pics that first appeared in Auto Bild nearly 18 months ago look increasingly like they were very accurate with the exception of the headlight shape.

I like the look of that car very much.

    Hatchbacks rule: V8 Vantage Concept:

Clearly designed to fit a golf bag or two

I hope the panamera isnt as much of a joke as the R class is. (i believe the Merc bigwigs recently admitted the R class was a mistake)

    Re: hatch-back it is

Fully agree, I still cannot understand why Merc introduced the 'R' class . The IMO inflated salons are pretty cheap here and when I was across to test drive the GL class, the lady just could not stop trying to get me in the 'R' class. I just don't like it !!!
