    Paint protection film

My current RS has many stone chips . Small ones, but once you start looking close you find them all over .

I was thinking that maybe I should do a film protection on my incoming LG RS .

For those who do it regularly, is there a brand you would recommend to stay away ? Would you also advise to do it ?

Close to my place there is a ProTech Monte Carlo shop . Is their  film good ?  I can't remember the name of the brand they use, it's a french one , not 3M .

Since I assume you cannot (or will not) do it by yourself, go with whatever protection film a wrapping company offers in your vicinity. Maybe they can get 3M, maybe there are better products out there?

My car has a protection film in the front and I am so happy I left it on the car (I wanted to remove it after I took delivery but my sales guy urged me to keep it and he was right). No clue what company the film is but I don't care. It is invisible and it protects pretty well (even a larger, almost tennis ball sized(!), stone hit my front hood, putting a huge hole in my windshield (people don't believe when I tell them, I didn't even notice during driving because the hole is in the lower part of the windshield, damage was probably contained because the stone hit the front hood first).

The stone left a small indentation in the film but the paint is OK. Amazing.

    Re: Paint protection film

I have 3M on my cars (front and fenders) for years and are very happy with it. It helps certainly if you know somebody who knows somebody who knows a good shop to get it done. There are other brands but I started with 3M ages ago and would stay with this brand.

    Re: Paint protection film

    the best brand is Xpel.

the french one used by Protech is surely HEXIS which is very good as well.

the most important is not the product you install but rather who install it. Ask those guys if they have a ploter and cut everything from the computer and it will be already a sign of professionalism.

I drove my car since 10 days and I am pretty sure I already have stone chip. I will put the film this weekend. entire car.

it takes few days to cure and you should let them take their time. aaround a week for entire car.Smiley

Agreed, these are the two best brands. Xpel gives most protection on the exposed bits and Suntek gives best maintenance of underlying colour to the naked eye.

    Re: Paint protection film

The choice for a paint protection seems to be triggered more by the "right shop" than by the "right brand". For instance,  my shop prepares / detailes the used cars and lease returns for the local P. dealer and therefore, as it was recommened, I never had to think about Xpel or else as they work with 3M...

    Re: Paint protection film

I have Xpel on the front of my car. This week my GTS is at the detailer having Ceramic Pro paint protectant applied to it, including the wheels. I will post some pictures when I pick it up this weekend. It takes about 2 days for the product to cure.

    Re: Paint protection film

Xpel is the best in my opinion. The film will absorb the impact and help protect the paint. However, for large and sharp stone at high speed, it might penetrate film and do the micro crack on the paint. In 5 years, the film might be dull and when you remove the film. The paint might come out with the film. Eventually, if you want perfect paint, you will have to do the paint job anyway.

But during the first 5 years, you will hardly see the stone chip and you can wax on top of the film as well.

Yes, must be Hexis . Will ask if they have a ploter . Read that quite a few guys had cutting marks when removing the film .  They advised me not to do the covering imidiatly after I got the car . Wait 3 weeks to have the paint settled .

    Re: Paint protection film

On my AMG GT I have put, only on the front bumber, Hexis clear but in mat (since it has a mat paint) The reason for choosing Hexis is that in Belgium I could only find a guy nearby who is using Hexis. The applied the film with a kind of gel, result looks great.

    Re: Paint protection film

I came to the same conclusion a few weeks back after a serious clean and touching up maybe 100 small chips with a pin. I think the main problem is the mix of long motorway drives and racetracks. After similar research it seemed that probably Xpel had the best product.

    Re: Paint protection film

I touched up a few of the main chips using a pin .  Not always sure it is better to do so then to leave it as it is . Some of my touch up' s are not ' flat ' . The paint give a slight bump . Is that any better then leaving a small white hole ?

I have also probably a 100 tiny chips .  Yesterday was at my dealer and saw a 997.2 RS in dark grey . Hardly any chips on it  and it looked like the car is tracked .  I thought most of my chips come from tracks  ......  ???

Most of the chips come from track especially if you enjoy staying behind somebody.

I was at my OPC and looking over the GT3.2 press test car - 911GB. It has PPF on the front, XPEL ( I think ) and it looked in pristine condition, which obviously is impressive due to the fact that the UK car mags have it to blister around the track and god knows where else. I know it would get looked after in between visits to the next mag but jeeps, I really inspected it closely..Smiley..

    Re: Paint protection film

If you track often, then paint film makes sense. If not, financially it doesn’t. Generally you don’t get your money back on resale.
