    Still thinking of a replacement.....

    Hi guys,

at the minute i'm still thinking about a replacement of my 996TT and during this period i've been driving few different cars so to have an idea what to go for.
Even if i basically always complain about having a more comfortable ride and a roomier car i think i cannot abandon the 911 since it's driving envolvement pays off all the drawbacks i listed up.

My question is now this one: i'm looking around for a used 997 and i'm still undecided on which one to have.
I drove a Carrera S recently (a review is to come shortly) and i'm expecting to have a test drive over a 997GT3 and a 997TT.

The doubt is about the price they have: the 997 S even very nicely spec'd can be found for quite half of the money of the other two.
So i ask myself...is it worth to pay double the money to have a 997GT3 or a 997TT?

    What do you think mates?

Re: Still thinking of a replacement.....

You say you are always complaining about the comfort? Then the GT3 is a no-go, is it?

Re: Still thinking of a replacement.....

The point at the minute is not the complain about comfort: is more about is it "right" or not to spend twice the money to have a 997TT or a 997GT3 over a 977C2S.
This is the core of my question.

Comfort side i think i can live with the GT3 (maybe my gf a little bit less )

Re: Still thinking of a replacement.....

My 997TT cost me twice my 997C2S Cab resale - but in my opinion it is twice the car!

Twice the car, yes and maybe even more, but do you need it? Having driven a 997C2 and C2S at the Porsche Driving School I'd have to say I would have been very happy with either in lieu of my TT. You could load up a 997C2S with every conceivable option plus a few after market tweaks like wheels, suspension and the like and still be way under the cost of a plain Jane TT. And you'd have a great car to boot!

But the bottom line it's like buying a toothbrush, everyone has their own ideas of what's good for them.

10-4 Alex, I agree with you. I loved my C2S but when a Turbo passes you by on the freeway just looking at that fat butt with the Turbo badge, it makes every penny you spent on the car worth while . Also that the turbos are timeless if an old turbo in nice condition still gets my attention.

Re: Still thinking of a replacement.....

If you are looking for something a little different try the AM V8 vantage. A nice alternative to a TT from a 997S...

Re: Still thinking of a replacement.....

Thanks for the hint SciFrog but i do not know for which reason i do not like too much the Vantage.
If i go for an aston it will be a DB9

Re: Still thinking of a replacement.....

I am in the same boat. Have sold my '05 C2S and am now trying to decide. Turbo Cab (dealer has an April build slot), '09 C2S Cab (wait until Sept), SL55 AMG (can get '08 for $118k), or even back to the Corvette. I think its down to the Porsche vs SL55. Opinions :-)

Re: Still thinking of a replacement.....

The fact that you are posting your question on the 997 TT board, indicates that what you want to hear is :
get yourself the TT, because deep inside you know it's the one you realy want

Re: Still thinking of a replacement.....

    Hello Silvershadow,

No right or wrong answer here obviously; everyone's need and want are different. Personally, I would pay close attention to the opinions of those who have had the 2 choices you list, 997 TT and 997 C2S, on a long term basis, like Alex. The key is LONG TERM ownership as to me the comparison is more valid that way. Why? From my own experience, it's only after a few months of driving that I realized as great a car the 997 C2 is, it has very little low end torque. It feels way too anemic, at least for an $80,000 sport car. EVERY time that I was in it, I found myself secretly wishing for more low end torque and power. In fact, I think you might be setting yourself up for a disappointment by replacing the powerful 996 TT with a NA 911.

    My humble opinions:

For track: 997 GT3 or 997 Turbo with suspension mods (lower the car, stiffen suspension, adjust alignment to your liking, etc.). Actually one of the "racers" here (TT Surgeon) takes his car to the track unmodded, but YMMV. If a comfortable ride is important to you as indicated, I would make sure to drive the GT3 **a few times**. It's one of the greatest track cars in the world, but those magazine reviewers don't have to live with one on a daily basis. In other words, it's not for everyone.

For daily driving: Hands down, no brainer 997 TT . This is not a perfect car by any stretch of imagination, but all things considered (beauty, speed, daily comfort, handling, timeless and classic form), IMHO there is STILL no competition. While I enjoy the sublime steering and the on-rail cornering feel, I think the explosive acceleration is the hallmark of this car and is something that I am glad I have experienced once in my life as a car enthusiast.

As you could see from the money people pour into their 997 Turbo here in this forum, the car is an absolute joy to own . I don't think you will regret this decision, not even for a second.
