I think most of us can relate to this

    911 Commercial

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5Iu7Gk6Igg

Probably a repost, but watching it really clicks with me. This was me at that age. May be one reason Porsche doesn't change the design too much?

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

    Same here!

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

It's great to see that someone finally uploaded a version of this commercial to YouTube that gets the 16:9 aspect ratio right! Most of the versions of this video online are all squished up.

Took me 22 years (although some of that was waiting for the 996 era to end)

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

That's the main reason why Porsche has already sold over 100,000 997, as 911 is our dream car.

Took me 31 years to get my first new Porsche 911.

Can't say the same for any other cars...

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

    took me one year less
    :P
The unrealistic dream car will be the Enzo

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

I wish I could say the same about myself.. I just bought the 911 cause I thought it had the best deal at the time I was gonna get a new car

Its more than just that now though

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

take me almost 40 years to get my first 911 as well..

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

Well, I think buying a new 911 in the states is much easier than buying it in Asia or Europe.....

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

    Targa Tim,

If you think it took you too long (31 years) to get your first 91, I think I waited longer. I was 16, close to 17, when I saw a 356C one night in October of 1964 (at the time the new 911 was being introduced). I started reading "Road and Track" Magazine in the spring of 1967 and read about the 911. I saw a 912 (the "poor man's 911, with the air-cooled four, not the six, cylinder engine) in the summer of 1967. It looked incredible then and still does.

    I took delivery of my 911S ( a 997) in late February of 2006. So I waited a bit over 41 years.

All I can say is that if your "personal radar" locks onto well-engineered cars that are also well-styled, you (for those who have not yet purchased a 911) will be willing to save up for and wait for the car of your dreams.

Still glad that I bought one after nearly two years of owning one!!!!!!!!

    Jim

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

Such a cool thread. I first "became aware" that a porsche was the best car in the world at the shoulder of my childhood friend. I think i was 6 or 7. His dad had (has?) three speedsters all in various states of disrepair... But I think what I like about the 911 is that it's been with me my whole lifelong car obsession... changing over the years, but mainly just getting refined to it's current lovely shape. I don't think it's necessarily a "rational" design. If you want to build a race car, I don't think you'd end up with a 911. So, maybe the 911 represents a dogged marriage to a design that isn't *ideal*. It's a deep deep exploration into an *idea*. I feel the same way about a lot of japanese design. They make "refinement" an artform, and that's what the 911 is for me.... especially the GT3... refined. It's rid of the millineal swoopy headlights and back to round eyes, the lines from the splitter to the c-pillar and back down to the tail are as pure as they ever have been... The whale tail is there in spirit (i like the RS or the '73 RS's tails better) but hey... Gotta leave something to work on for the next one! Are there any other cars that have such a clear, long lineage? Can any other marque claim to have taken a single design idea so far? 45 years of working on the same thing will lead you to amazing places.

Really cool ad! I always get chills when watching it.

Funny thing about the ending though, are the stats, quoted on-screen. They quote Top track speed .

    I feel the same.

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

    It is a great ad.

This brings me to my Porsche story. In April 1984 I bought the First Edition of Fast Lane Magazine, (some people in the UK may remember it), which featured a 'Supertest' of the new Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2. The car was pictured on the front cover, mid corner and clearly before the days of electronic help. I knew at that moment I wanted a Porsche. Then came the bad news; my Dad told me that the listed Pounds23, 365.59 (Inc car tax and VAT) was about the same as a small house at the time, and told me to work hard at school! Well 23 years later I got the Cayman and now, (well just got to wait to September) the 997.

I still have the magazine, the best bit from the review says, "The all alloy flat six has probably undergone more changes this time than in any of its previous alterations, and we can only wonder how much development there is left in it." The performance figures were 0-60 mph 5.4 secs, 231 bhp, 209 lb ft torque and a top speed of 152 mph! Seems they did manage to develop it somewhat further!

Re: I think most of us can relate to this

It is a great ad. I have always been linked to Porsche in one way or another. I was born on September 30, the day James Dean died in his Spyder - but several years later - in the fall of 1963 not too far from the Frankfurt autoshow displaying the 911 for the first time (yes I am as old as the 911!). I spend my youth in Austria not too far from Gmund and watched early Porsches with awe as they traveled the roads in my neighborhood. One of my dads friends (Mr. Princehorn )had one and I even rode in it several times. I remember stareing at that car anytime it was in our driveway. I worked in a machine shop after school to be able to afford my first Porsche, a 914, as soon as I turned 16. By that time I had moved to the US. A good thing since I got to drive much earlier. Since then it has been 7 911s in a row which have continuously kept me behind the wheel of the best car in the world - hands down. When I hear of waiting 40 years to own a 911 I know how lucky I have been to be able to have driven these great cars my entire life. I guess I will be driving them for a while longer too. Thanks to all of you for making the Porsche 911 such a wonderful car. It's the owners who make the difference.
    Cheers,
