    Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

Most black Porsches I see are Basalt black. Why isn't the normal Black is not chosen anymore? Is it a matter of taste or is the metallic paint finish more resilient and scratchproof? I like the normal black in that it has more depth and brilliance. The metallic is not so much pure black especially in the sun. What do you think about it, especially owners of black 911s.

Re: Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

I can tell you from personal experience that the Basalt Black is far from scratch proof. My 997S is Basalt and it looks amazing in the sun. Regular black is a completely different colour in the sun.

Re: Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

i have had 2 non mettalic black cars now. I love the colour, but oh the work and scratches.I don't regret getting the colour, but I am not sure I would do it again.

Re: Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

My order for the Turbo Cab. originally went in as Basalt. Then I started having second thoughts. Crazy I know but I visited 6 dealerships within about a month (they're all within 15 minutes of my home or office) to look at Basalt outside vs. Black. It's then it started really buggin me. In the dark shade & inside the dealership the Basalt can almost pass for Black just less shiney. But in the bright sun the car looks more of a very dark grey, even grey-ish blue/purple-ish There's blue & gold mettalic flakes in the paint, hence the blu-ish hue in the sunlight. In the end I switched to Black. I have a black suv now & have had 7 black sports cars in the last few years, 996 Turbo, M5, etc. so I know Black is the hardest to maintain but there's just no escaping that feeling of looking at a clean Jet Black Porsche. The Basalt would definitely be easier to maintain & is a really nice color but I like Black better. (Totally subjective I know)

Re: Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

I love my black 997S. When I get a turbo, it will also be black, no doubt about it. As for maintenance, have someone else maintain it every week or two.

I second that, flat black is the way to go

Re: Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

I didn't have much choice for my RS, only flat black as standard.
It is phenomenal! Much darker than Basalt and when clean, absolutely superb!
Only downside is maintenance, it'll scratch very easily.
Basalt is a metallic colour so not as fragile but not as deep either.
If you accept the high maintenance of flat black then I would recommend it.

Re: Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

I used to love black, but now just can't stand for all those scratches on every where!!

Too notable amd easy to get scratch.

But when in showroom condition it is badass and I don't like metalic black either.

Re: Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

I have black too and it's awesome.Scratches very easy to do

Re: Basalt Black and Non-metallic Black

I'm not sure the metallic paint is any more scratch-proof, but I got the Basalt Black Metallic. It probably shows the "swirls" more than non-metallic paint, but since it is an "off-black," meaning it's a dark grey (according to the body shop - part of the Porsche dealer where I had some minor work done on the rear bumper). I like it in that it also doesn't show the dirt as quickly as the straight black.
