"The Porsche 956 and 919 will lap the Nürburgring together"
(8 May 2018)
The Nürburgring 24 Hours is already an event you need to attend. Like Le Mans mixed with a music festival (with a splash of stag or hen do thrown in), it’s as fun and festival-like as motorsport gets.
This year’s is looking even more unmissable, for Porsche is wheeling out two quite special cars for a lap of the Nordschleife. Namely the 919 Hybrid Evo, which recently beat an F1 car around Spa, and a 956 C just like the one that still holds the outright lap record for the Ring’s north loop, a startling 6m 11.13s that may never be beaten.
While not the exact same car that Stefan Bellof made history in back in 1983, it’s a representative car raced by Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass a year later. This Saturday it will take to the Nordschleife just before the flag falls to mark the start of the N24, alongside the 919 Hybrid Evo that’s recently set its own record. The 919 will be driven by Timo Bernhard, while the 956 will be piloted by racing legend Hans Stuck.
The Evo is arguably a car that could have a go at taking the 956 C’s record, too, but they won’t be competing against the clock at the weekend. It’s a parade lap to warm the crowd up before the grid of sports cars gets going for the Ring’s showpiece event. Perhaps, though, it’s Porsche hiding in plain sight and getting a feel for how the Evo handles the bumps and crests of the Nordschleife, y’know, just in case...

Great news.
However with current tire development, better tarmac and removal of bumps and widening the track at some places to make the track safer, and the fact that series production cars can lap the Ring already at 6:4x I find it hard to believe that the record of 6:11 would never be beaten.
It is however very impressive when you think that this record holds from 1983

Carlos from Spain:It was a shorter version of the track since there was some construction at the time of that record, 2Km shorter I believe. So that helped too.
Actually in 1983, they used the same layout they do today, and in fact the 6:11.13 time accounts for the extra 200m on the pit wall as well that is omitted in modern lap records.

I had read that during the race weekend were Bellof made that lap in qualifying, the Grand Prix part of the Nurburgring was being constructed and the track was shortened 2Km due to the construction for that race weekkend. But now that you mention it, I guess it never went back to the original length then and so it was the same as today...

Looks like a record attempt tomorrow (Friday).
A lot of people from Porsche preparing at T13 this evening. Media guys testing equipment.
Security didn't like me being there... :-) I didn't see any 919 but I assume that is all about 919.
Tomorrow is going to be interesting :-)
