In Europe, definitely. Automatic transmissions were reserved to bigger and heavier cars, mostly in the luxury car sector (funny, Americans introduced these cars to Europe at first...). Later on, the automatic transmission made it into smaller mid sized cars and now you can find it almost everywhere. The old auto trannies were pretty slow, sometimes even outright annoying, no fun to use, especially not in manual mode. With modern DCT systems nowadays, things have changed but in the US, choosing manual over auto is definitely a cultural thing. A manly thing.

One of my wife's female friends is a self-made business woman and loves cars, also loves driving them and her last boyfriend (of many) ended their relationship recently because "you are such a strong woman and I don't feel comfortable with that". That "strong" woman cried for days after this idiot left her, she is a very nice person, so his loss.
