Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Closed

I like it a lot, with the exception of the shape of the rear wing, especially when not deployed.
Also, the shape of the inlets o the rear side panels seems final (in the pics of the 'Ring), and that seems a bit smaller/awkwardly shaped... Well, we'll see!

Any news on when we can expect the announcement of the 992? September 2018?

The exterior design is a matter of details, but the interior is what I believe will the determinant of how 911 the 992 remains.

all 992 variants will be turbo engine.

"911 turbo" is now quite misleading to the new customers if they don't know 911 history.

My car 🚘 only has five letters in the back. The good old days.

Turbo cars can be tricky and expensive to maintain and keep running at peak power as hoses and other plumbing ages.  Out of warranty the base 911 will be expensive to keep.  Turbo bills for base model thrills and value would be a hit on resale very quickly.  Just my two cents. I know most of you never see the end of a warranty but you do deal with resale value even when leasing. There is no free lunch.

That said. Are there any tuning kits for these new turbos?

Sorry, I had to do a bit of mocking here (after my "benchmark" 991.1 Turbo S). Smiley I know that Porsche was caught by surprise (488, McLaren) but this is no excuse.

So what I glean from all of this:  we don't have a real photo but the car looks heavy and big and has glimmers of Panemera ugliness.

Isuk is likely conceptually right, that it will drive long time 911 guys back to older cars and to Ferrari, but the Chinese market will eat this thing up.

Makes sense to hold on to 991.2 GT3s?

Unfortunately, so correct a statement. A few years ago I wrote here about how the 991 had an enlarged footprint so it would fit into a different EPA classification for mileage requirements.   Looks like that trend is continuing with the 992.

Leawood, Not sure if you are correct that turbos will lose value drastically. Older turbos from the 70s 80s and 90s are going at extreme premiums.

Who wants the old cars? I just want to keep the sound, not the tech (OK, a 800 hp n/a engined monster wouldn't hurt either but this ain't gonna happen anyway with Porsche Smiley, not that it happened before Smiley).

Mostly I was concerned about turbo expenses while owning essentially a base model. Yeah the old turbos are expensive - mezger dry sump engines. Nothing like that appeal with the new ones.

Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Closed

Hard for me to understand why anyone wants one of those old turbos. I had a 76 turbo, well modified, and it was not only unreliable but extremely tricky to drive. Talk about turbo lag! A real antique compared to the sophistication of current turbos. But for $24,500, I guess it was a bargain.

Re: 992 (Next 911 generation 2018/2019) Thread Closed

Right. Mine is much newer but still tricky to get in proper tune and running right. It is easier to exploit the power than with older turbos but I am still concerned that the new base models won’t justify the expense in the long run. To me there are the gt cars which have value and then everything else.  I could justify buying a new gt in a minute  in cash , but everything else in the Porsche lineup is not of value to me unless depreciated and slightly used.  The good news is that 911s are expensive so the first owner typically takes good care.  Better than average used cars are the result - with massive savings

The Speciale isn't exactly an "old" car and the 2018 GT3 isn't either. Smiley

458 Speciale is one of my favorite cars, same goes to the 458 Aperta.

The 488? I like it a lot but even more the new 488 Pista. They sound great for turbo charged cars.

New 992 Turbo is supposed to be available in 2019 already (rumors), which would be pretty early for a 911 Turbo.
