    Front License Plates

    Happy New Year!!!

Can anyone recommend an alternative to mounting the license plate on the front bumper?

    Re: Front License Plates

Moving to a State that doesn't require them? Maybe! Just joking, of course.

    Re: Front License Plates

    Hi Ralph,
I use the device from www.moweraxle.com which uses the tow hook mount on the front bumper. I do not use it year round but rather when I go in for annual inspections. Takes just a few minutes to install.

    Re: Front License Plates

A fellow on 6speedonline was selling a version similar to the one from moweraxle but for considerably less. I have it and think that it's perfect for those "temporary" mountings.

    http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=107326

Not sure if he's still selling them. Worth a try to ask, stumberger_r@msn.com.

    Re: Front License Plates

Have you considered modifying a bracket so the screws are driven _UP_ward instead if horizontally? Holes will not be visible when you sell.

Some states have loopholes in their plate display laws. I hear some do not care even if plate is inside car on front dash as long as it is horizontal. Rules are on state's website somewhere. If so, no passenger means plate on dash.

    Re: Front License Plates

LOL! MMD, you crack me up!

I did see a Corvette Z06 not too long ago with the brackets exactly as you'd described. I asked him how he did that. He told me of a place that sells them and promised to email me that information but to date I haven't gotten anything. Oh well...

Thanks A80. LOL. I'm glad to entertain you guys.

There's more (if your state allows merely a vertically displayed plate): fit plate into sunroof mechanism! When you see a cop quickly open sunroof and plate pops up like the mini windscreen/noise buffer that's already in there.

    Re: Front License Plates

We need one of those plates that 007 had that pops out or switches plates at a push of a button or perhaps activated by voice recognition or Bluetooth. Hey, we've gotta update those "Bond" gadgets to the 21st century after all.

    Re: Front License Plates

Anyone know if for a factory delivery, do they automatically drill holes for the front license plate holder? i.e. do I have to specify that I don't want them to? Thanks,

    Re: Front License Plates

The dealership usually drills the holes over here in the US. We usually have to ask them not to put it on.

    Re: Front License Plates

    Thank you so much everyone!!!

I'll checkout the tow hook and see if that will work.
The DMV regulations in Southern Cali are very strict. I often avoid cities that enforce front license plates and this tow hook alternative will help.

For my first car it seemed like I was calling two times a day around delivery time to make sure they did not screw up and drill holes in my bumper. Got all sorts of reassurances every time I called.

Sound excessive? I got there for delivery of the first car (997S) and while finalizing the deal the kid was walking out to the car with a cordless drill and a cheap frame.

    Stay on it!

Second dealer said they do NOT drill holes UNLESS requested to do so. Was more relaxed but still called a few times.

    Re: Front License Plates

    MMD/ATOMIC80,
Thanks for the heads up. I definitely won't assume it'll be all right...much better IMO to spend a few dollars on long distance than to get stuck w/ unwanted holes in the fender!

    Re: Front License Plates

    assume = ass u me

    Re: Front License Plates

The device from moweraxle uses the tow hook mount and does not require drilling any holes. The problem is that the offset license plate looks unattractive(high-tech word for ugly). What is needed is a mounting device that attaches into existing points or holes that can be drilled in unobtrusive locations.

    Re: Front License Plates

    Good idea/observation MichaelL,

Get a pair of these (either F or I) and attach to UNDERneath (vertically). They are twist-turn fasterners usually used for canvas. F is probably better with pop-rivit attachment method.

Fabricate a plate bracket with aligned holes for twist fasteners and attach some rubber grommeting to stop vibrations.

Can do the same thing with actual screws to make it "permanent."

No big deal for a guy who's handy.

    Re: Front License Plates

    Drill UP, under this lip.

In Italy the front plate is required

My dealer did not install the device and left it up to me. I chickened out as in Virginia, there is a $250 fine for not having a front plate. I've seen one or two Corvettes without the front plate, but given that the locals consider anyone driving a Porsche as being an outsider, they would tend to nail me for the "infraction." So I played it safe and installed the device and the plate.

By the way, there is an outfit that sells a plastic (and matching) device called "Bumperplugs," of which I have a set and will use in case I ever move to a state that doesn't require the front plate. They sell them in colors that match Porsche's paint and that of other upscale cars.

    Jim

    Re: Front License Plates

In Colorado, I asked my dealer to not install. He said OK but I had to sign a waiver saying they gave me the bracket. screws, etc. but didn't want them to install.

    Re: Front License Plates

No plates in front required for Kansas unless you order a vanity plate. It's great to cruise the country without one legally and see all those other ugly front plates.
    Peace -

    Re: Front License Plates

I attached mine lower and it blocks the air intake for the center cooler. But it isn't plugged into any painted surfaces. (I'll try and post a couple of pics).

    Re: Front License Plates

As I said, I put mine in to avoid the Virginia $250 fine for not having a front plate installed (the local rednecks would love to nail someone driving a "foreign" car), and if I happen to move to a State that doesn't require the front plate, I'll pay to get the front bumper filled and repainted. Frankly, it's not that expensive (under $1,000) and I am sure to be saving at least half that in tickets, if not more.

    Jim

    Re: Front License Plates

Jim, I didn't have a front license plate and never had a problem in the Commonwealth. When I got pulled over for (alledgedly) speeding, I got a ticket for no front license plate. I got one of the mounts that uses the front tow hook. The judge dismissed that ticket.

    Re: Front License Plates

Bumperplugs.com and forget about the front plate.

    Re: Front License Plates

    Surfer,

I assume you must live in the "Tidewater" region. If I have made a mistake, I'll get my body shop to fix the damage I did to the front bumper. Keep us posted to see if you get nailed by the VA State Police or other local "law enforcement" folks.

    Jim

    Re: Front License Plates

I have a mount which attaches to the front tow hook.

It consists of a machined aluminum bolt which threads into the tow hook outlet and a heavy duty bracket for the plate.

Nothing touches the bumper and it installs in minutes.
Many buy them just to keep in the car in case they get pulled over, or to pass Inspection .

The kit is $35 , which includes shipping in the US and Canada .
If anyone is interested, you can contact me at :

    To all Canadians:
please do NOT send personal or Bank checks from Canadian Bank accounts . The transfer costs are ridiculous .
    Use pay pal only .

    thank you
