Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

AWE have just release one. It fits under the factory covers also which is a bonus.

    http://awe-tuning.com/pages/shared/part_...&IL=cfstrut

I guess by the nature of the 997 it really doesn't need one but humour me, as I'm lost for something to buy myself.

So, has anyone fitted one, did it make any difference?

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

    It sure is pretty!

hehe, yeah, it is....but get the picture. Perhaps I'll leave it. lol

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

Supposedly, strut braces are totally unecessary on the water-cooled 911's (996 & 997) and provide no benefit at all regarding performance.

For instance, they were always part of the factory racecars in the air-cooled days, but not since...

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

The 997 already has a front strut brace. I can't see how the addition of another strut brace is going to improve the performance of the car.

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

Looks like a bit of a gimmick then. Can't see them selling many of these. Well I can, but not to me. Thanks guys.

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

Am I the only person that bought a 997S that came without a strut brace? Actually, I've never seen one come from the factory with one - 808C2S, where did you hear that?

If you read the information at the link, you find that you really have to be at a very high driving limit to see the benefits of tying the struts together on the 997. I don't see this as dishonest or a gimmick at all - in fact it's very straight forward. AWE is well known as a reputable and honest company - I've had nothing but good experience from them. If curious, email Mike and ask - he might say "for your street driving, it won't help", or he might say "with your PSS and Hoosiers and turning 59s at Lime Rock, you will see a benefit". There are many companies that produce strut braces for the 997 platform and all are more expensive than the AWE one...

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

Ron, that's a fair point and well made. A bit like the brace. I wasn't trying to discredit AWE at all as they are as you say a reputable and honest company by all accounts.

The UK distributors or indeed Mike have not come back to me since emailing them both but that could obviously be because of the Christmas holidays.

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

It improves the "PAR"....the Performance Appearance Ratio

They don't come with one per se, but with the way the car is built, it is reinforced at the bulkhead (behind the trunk) in a way that makes a strut brace superfluous.

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

I have a 997C4S and a 993 Targa, and both have a front strut brace fitted. The difference is more noticeable with the 993. Whether a 997 benefits from a front strut brace depends very much on the driving condition - I regularly have to deal with tight hairpins with poor road surfaces and the strut brace has improved steering feel and precision, as well as stability

Interesting. A 993 definitely needs one (mine made a noticable improvement), but I was always told not to bother with 996/997. If it really does make a difference, I would expect to see them on the 997 GT3 Cup and RSR (like they were on the 993 factory racecars).

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

I purchased a strut brace many years ago from the race parts department in Zuffenhausen for my 911. It helped out with that particular body which by then had some miles on it. There is no apparent gain doing that to the 997. But if you HAVE to buy something for yourself,--go for it!

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

I can't speak to the 9x7, but I can tell you front and rear braces on my 986S made a worthwhile improvement in steering response and overall rigidity.

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

    Ron,

I could've sworn I saw a strut brace in the front. It's black and connects the struts to the firewall of the car.

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

That's true with the 9x6 series too, which is why I discounted the value of a brace. On another board I never heard of anyone who had put one on and wasn't pleased with the change, so I went ahead, and am happy I did.

Jim, what kind of difference did you noticed?

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

It's another one of those additions that improves the "PAR",
    Performance Appearance Ratio

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

Whoa, very slow response on my part, I missed this thread. As to what it does, it firms up the steering response, not that it was rubbery without it, but the right to left feel, and turn-in response is better. It's also better over bumps and turning into driveways and uneven surfaces, less chassis flex. My tires are due to be replaced in spring (why flatspot new ones to sit in the garage), and the roaring from the old tires went down a bit in the rear. I think it keeps the tub under the top from resonating as much.

As for 964C2's comment, you can't see them, so there's no PAR. The rear one is impossible to see without taking part of the top apart, and the one in front is only visible through the holes in the cowl cover, not that you could see anything and figure out what it is without pulling the covers.

Re: Anyone fitted a front strut brace to their 997

....the "PAR" is in the mind
