Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and removes speed limiter

    from Autoblog

We know that the Nissan GT-R's ECU wizardry is impressive, but this little tidbit left us in awe. According to our friends over at the GTChannel, the GT-R's integrated computer limits the vehicle's speed in Japan to 111 mph (180 km/h), but once the GPS system detects that you've arrived at a domestic circuit, it removes the top speed limiter for all-out track assaults. In the U.S., they've bumped up the electronically-limited top speed to 156 mph (250 km/h), but there's no integration with the GPS here in the States, meaning that anyone that wants to go faster on track has to have the ECU modifed. Nissan has made several overtures that the GT-R's ECU will be a tough nut to crack, but we're sure that enterprising tuners both here and abroad will be able to coax a few extra ponies out of the twin-turbo'd 3.8-liter mill and remove any electronic nannies that go with it.

Re: Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and removes

There are not many US tracks (other than ovals) where 156mph can be exceeded. I don't favor electronic limiters at all though (especially for sportscars)...

Re: Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and removes

Another foot in the door for localized GPS speed control.
So what is the techno acronym for this feature? DNB? For Drivers have No Brains?

AFAIK, Saab, Porsche, Maserati, Corvette and Ferrari are the last cars left without speed limiters. Corvette is the only car model that offers a optional sport exhaust that actually does increase hp and Porsche is yet the only
sports car brand that gets most of its sales from trucks.
    A strange world!

    Yes, very annoying .

Re: Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and remo

Lamborghinis have always had a speed limiters. Past 300km/h the wires to the fog lights switch heats up too much and causes the speedometer to stop working.

    Merry Christmas!

Excuse me Santa for forgetting to mention Lamborghini, but I was shopping online for a fire extinguisher.

Re: Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and remo

This is stupid, Saab doesen't even need a speed limiter.

Re: Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and remo

It's a Japanese law to limit the cars to 180kmh. Nothing to do with Nissan itself I believe...

Re: Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and remo

so in the US they will be "delimited"?

Re: Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and remo

Who knows. But I sure hope they delimit them for Australia!

the 997TT has a 6th gear speed limiter but it is very close to redline that no one will notice it unless the redline is increased. Some tuners will delete that limiter when increasing redline, otherwise the car will not go beyond 193 mph real.

Re: Nissan GT-R recognizes tracks via GPS and removes

BTW, any right hand driver plans to import the GTR must have the GPS deactivated. Beacuse the car will not start once it leaves Japan. This have slow some Asian gray market importers.
