    New to me 991.1 GT3

Well I got tired of waiting and fighting for a .2 GT3 allocation so picked up the below .1 GT3.  Traded in my old 991S, it was good timing as I had just spent 20hrs or so polishing it and coating it with Kamikaze Miyabi over the winter and only driven it a couple times this year.  Paint on the 'new' car is a mess so get to do it all over again.  I know a lot of you don't care about the whole detailing thing, but I do and once you have seen swirled out paint you can't unsee it.

Having said all that, it's such a different car from my 991S and I love it.  Driving it home I didn't care what it looked like on the outside...took the long way home on back roads after picking it up and it was fantastic.  It was just above freezing so took it easy, but even still it was a great drive.  Picked it up on Friday and of course it snowed that night.  Then we got about 8" (20cm) of snow this morning so have to wait till later in the week to drive again.  Can't wait to get some proper drives in with it and head to the track.  As the pics show I'm already removing the stripes.  Yes the lift was left up in the first pic, oops.  Scifrog will be proud of me though, last year at this time I had a black car and a grey car.   Now my cars are blue and yellow, must be a mid-life crisis or something.  To be honest yellow wouldn't be my first choice but it looks good to me on this car.

Crappy new car photos, including de-stickering process underway

    Great stuff, congrats! kiss

Is that Speed Yellow, or something else? Pics look a little richer than SY does normally.

would be interested in your detailing adventures - wouldn't mind trying to clean up a few things on mine..

Thanks for the kind words Smiley  It's Racing Yellow, little different in hue to Speed Yellow.  Seems like it has more 'pop' to it than SY.  I'll try and keep this thread updated on detailing progress.  I really enjoy the process even if it gets tedious.  I probably go a bit over the top when I tape the cars up, but then I'm pretty new to the scene.  I was super hesitant to do it myself, but with today's dual action polishers it's almost fool proof!  All cars look good in pics, but correcting the paint makes such a huge difference.  Some pics of the old car all taped up for the heck of it.  The pic in the sun was just me checking I got all the polish off before coating.

Nice color! Glad you got rid of the original grey stripes, what a mess they were...

Great stuff, congratulations! I think I remember that you posted pictures of your previous car before, going from black to yellow your neighbors will definitely recognize that you got a new car. And looks as if you got a proper exhaust to underline that as well. Smiley

Please keep going with the detailing pics, looks great and is always nice to see other people do interesting stuff.

Re: New to me 991.1 GT3

Very nice ride! Congratulation! kiss I can see the patience that went into taping up every individual letter on the rear bumper. I applaud you for doing it yourself and I agree, after an initial learning phase it is not that difficult and it can be a very satisfying process :) Did you use a clay bar as well?

Re: New to me 991.1 GT3

@ SciFrog, Emmanuel, bluelines - thanks gents, can't wait for the weather to improve to get back out on the road

@ Ferdie, that's a heck of a memory, indeed I did and the neighbors have definitely noticed both the color and noise!  The kids seemed much happier with the exhaust than their parents indecision Once spring rolls around proper I'll definitely document the detail process. It has a clear bra over a lot of the car that I'll be removing as well.  Glad the prior owner installed it, but I prefer just accepting paint chips and the look of virgin paint.

@ Pilot, thanks man, I always look forward to your thread updates, one of the best threads on Rennteam.  The contamination on the black car wasn't terrible so I got away with just using an AutoScrub Nanoskin sponge rather than a clay bar.  The paint was crazy soft on that car so the sponge didn't mar the paint as much as a clay bar would.  Made the polishing step a little easier.  I did clay the windows.  The GT3, once I remove the clear film, I'll have to see.  The areas not protected by film will likely need claying.  Have a good friend who runs a detailing business and he is going to measure the paint thickness for me to ensure I have enough clear to compound not just do a one step polish.

Great pics , and the polished black looks so good . I just don't have the patience to do it myself by my basalt black  Carrera S would certainly need a treatment after 10 years of sleeping outside and a few automatic car washes.

Looking forward to the process on the GT3 .

Don’t get too anal about your car appearance and focus on driving it. Love the color.

You have your way. I have my way. As for the correct way and the only way, it does not exist.

Re: New to me 991.1 GT3

    @ rhino, RC, DJM48 kiss

@ Gnil, yep one drive in the GT3 erased any ideas of going back to a Carrera.  I will say about 10 hours into a paint correction I sometimes question my sanity and ask why I didn't just pay someone to do it.  But, much like cycling, the process is therapy for me, a way to work out stress.

@ bluelines,  I'll definitely be getting passed by any 911.2 GTS and of course any R8's on the track

@ nberry, thanks, color is growing on me as well.  And yes as Larry Kosilla's tag line says it's Drive and Protect, the key word being Drive.  Just need Mother Nature to be a bit more cooperative with the temps and frozen precipitation.

Re: New to me 991.1 GT3

How often can you detail a car anyway? Each polish removes clear coat, doesn't it? Even if it's only very little, if you're doing this as a hobby, you will end up removing a lot in just a couple of years, or am I mistaken?

    Fantastic new ride, btw Smiley

Thanks Gauss!  Yeah in my 6 years of ownership I fully corrected my 911S twice.  You shouldn't have to do it very often if you wash your car properly.  I think once or twice I had to do a finish polish on it to remove some swirls but it's a very mild correction step with very little cut.  And you are absolutely right every time you compound and / or finish polish you are removing clear coat.  It may not be as much as you think, but the guys who compound / wet sand their cars twice a year...at some point they will burn through the paint.  I see these guys on some of the detailing forums I'm on and just don't understand why they do it so frequently.  I'm going to have my detailer friend measure my paint thickness before I correct it.  If there isn't enough clear to do so, I'll apply a sealant every 6 months or so and wax it when I feel like it.

It's not just the machine polishing I enjoy, it's the washing, applying coatings, and just working on the car in general.  For me it's part of the enjoyment of owning a car.  Don't get me wrong, it's not a garage queen and will never be in a bubble.  As long as there wasn't a lot of salt on the roads, I drove my 911S through winter.  Driving these things is far and away the most enjoyable aspect of owning them.

Re: New to me 991.1 GT3

Well said and thanks for explaining. I'm eager to see the follow-up of your hobby. Enjoy your beauty to the fullest wink

Re: New to me 991.1 GT3

Here it is sans stripes.  Was a little annoyed to find a 7cm long cut in the ppf from a razor blade.  Not sure why they were trimming the stripes on the car, but oh well.  Hopefully it isn't through the paint.  Will find out more once I get to removing it.  Pretty straight forward removing the stripes, since it was pretty cold used a hair dryer to heat the adhesive up and then just pulled em off.  Cleaned off any remaining residue with Tar-X.  I'll probably go ahead and pull off the GT3 lettering on the doors as well.

To be fair to her she used to drive a Ford 250 dually with a 28 foot trailer all across the US and daily drove a manual sports car for years.  So she doesn't dislike cars, just not the most exciting thing in the world to her.  It was more a funny picture of what she thinks of my detailing OCD Smiley.  Sounds like you are a lucky man  Smiley

This is why I married someone who is not too much into cars, so I get to drive them without arguing. Smiley

One of my wife's friends loves Porsche, even drives one, she is very attractive (if you ignore some of the tattoos Smiley) but has a hard time finding a man. She wouldn't let a man drive, she always wants to drive herself and this already scared off a couple of guys (her words). Last time we met, she came in her 997.1 Cab and her boyfriend in a Skoda Fabia...well...it didn't last long. Smiley Smiley
