    The under-body diffuser looks pretty serious too - the old belt and suspenders approach

    Have they published the downforce at Vmax yet?  Must be huge!

    Tesla beats its estimate- and jumps into McLaren threads - 😎

    even if it did 0-60 one second quicker than promised it would take a lot of hard launches to make up even a few months wait.

    Still - I want one. As a stock Tesla still has a way to go. IMHO.

    Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    In case no one has picked it up yet, McLaren lost their best guy over Christmas.

    Aston Martin signed Chris Goodwin.

    Cool, I owned 3 on the list and turned down 3 more. (actually owned 2, my incoming Turbo S is more powerful smiley)

    Didn't bother to apply for another.

    So 7 out of the top 8 cars. Smiley

    Interesting that Turbo S is so close to 918...

    Also nice to see a Ford GT time - very rarely included

    Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    720S vs 918 runway 1/2 mile. About 1 mph difference at the end.

    918 is still the king from a dig I think, but the conditions for the 720S were really bad. 0-60 5.1s, etc. From a roll the 720S might be able to take it.

    Nature of the cars' design philosophy.

    918 was designed to be best from 0 to whatever.

    720S, P1 and most traction limited beasts forgot the 0 to part and try to be great at speed when traction is no long an issue. Just the nature of trying to put down too much power through only 2 wheels.

    Just simple physics.

    I still wonder how McLaren does it from 200-300 kph...insane acceleration. There are certain rules in engine development, like thermodynamics/thermomanagement and emissions. Unless McLaren found the holy grail of engine technology but I doubt it. In the speed range 200-300 kph, the weight isn't really important, so...

    I wonder about emissions output in the 200-300 kph speed range. I kind of have a feeling that it doesn't look good (even compared to the sportscar competition).

    At higher speeds, the weight penalty isn't that big of a deal, especially if we are talking minor differences only.

    I still have my suspicions, sorry but not that it really matters to us sportscars fans. Smiley

    Btw: The 570 is, as far as I remember, over 4 seconds faster from 0-300 kph (vs. the 991.2 Turbo S). Or was it 2 seconds? Can't look it up right now.

    Speaking of weight: I would also like to see McLaren crash tests and how much they make (profit margin) on every single car because of the light weight materials used. Many many questions here, I am pretty sure that Porsche and other competitors have already did their homework on this one. At least I hope so.

    Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    Others aren't doing CF because their brand cachet sells cars just fine with cheaper aluminum and their process is already invested in maximizing margins as it is.

    Porsche will go CF tub on the 911 when they can go CF on all 911s. Lamborghini will go CF on the V10 when the R8 and whatever else shares it is ready.

    Also, keep in mind that the chassis for the Huracan and R8 have existed for a long time. They aren't new at all. The hybrid CF/Al construction used in the Huracan and R8 was revealed in like 2011.

    https://www.autoblog.com/2011/02/28/report-audi-developing-super-lightweight-r8-codenamed-nf/

    Composites are the future. They'll come to everything high-end sooner or later. They'll even probably come to mid-range and low-end eventually.

    Cost factor is important and of course maintenance and repairability.

    Weight will not go down though for various reasons, unless car manufacturers find new materials and/or new construction methods.

    Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    Re the 720S I think the incredible 0-200 time of 7.2s is what makes the 200-300 so fast at 19.4s, if we take the 200-300 at 12.2s this actually about right for 720PS. 750PS 997GT2s from Sportec and 9ff were tested at 200-300 in 11.8/11.4s (respectively) these were 100kg/81kg heavier and the drivers had to shift gears manually.

    The 720S was measured at 745PS/771NM by the Insoric dyno system, the American attempts at dynoing resulting in the usual yeehaaa wild claims of 800hp are just par for the course and of course liked by all those punters whose 850hp modded cars are getting spanked by a real 750PS car indecision

    The 570S I agree is a bit more puzzling its best test was 0-200 in 8.5s and 0-300 in 24.7 so 200-300 in 16.2s which is about what my similar weight 997GT2 was achieving when I ran at 659PS (measured on engine dyno) remember manual gear changes worth prob 1s -I suspect the 570 makes its rated torque of 600NM all the way up to peak power at 7500 which would mean 630hp, it certainly feels like this the torque does not seem to dip as the revs rise to peak..... I took mine to the speeds we are talking about here the other day and a warning chime coupled with tyre warning light came on, reminding you that for speeds over 200 the tyre pressure has to be raised significantly frown

    I did indeed I had one serious punter on it and I was extremely happy to sell it to him, he was very knowledable knew all about RS Tuning and the modifications and intended to carry on "hot rodding" it, he paid me what I asked which I thought was quite fair and I am glad the car will now actually be used and with someone with the finances to maintain in and the passion and knowledge to really enjoy it.

    Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    McLaren dry weight is about 2800 lbs.

    Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    720S which did 0-300 in 19.4s was weighed during the Supertest full of fuel and came out at 1425kg thats 3141lbs.

    The 675LT which also did a Supertest weighed 1361kg so 3000lbs.

    570S is supposed to weigh DIN at 1440kg 3174kg with the Spider being 46kg heavier.

    No - they calculated a time difference of 1.5s (between 200 and 300 kph) resulting from the weight disadvantage of the turbo s alone (!). Weight is of significant relevance in high speed ranges, I learned during the discussion of these calculations, didn't expect this outcome based on physics and mathematics either Smiley

    Can you give us an idea of the calculation, the weight difference between Turbo S and 570S is about 150kg ?

    I would have thought the drag would be more/as significant in this range and I don't think we know the 570S numbers Smiley

    Re: McLaren on a winning streak

    Weight is linear - no formula with m2 or so

    a=2*m/s*s

    m= mass, s=time, a=accel

    Fl=(A*q*v2*Cw)/2

    A=area

    q=dense of air (1,3 kg/m3)

    v=velocity

    Fl=force due to drag

    do your math
