Car bottoms out on very sharp downhill turns.

During a spirited 140 mile drive through the hills yesterday, my car bottomed out about 6 different times while making very sharp downhill turns. It's the 1st time I've really noticed this- but combination of turns and slope was sharper than usual. The sound wasn't very loud and the impact didn't seem too bad/harsh, but it was a little bit unsettling to me nevertheless . Car handled fine afterwards, with no apparent damage.

Anyone else experience this? Anything to be concerned with or is this normal?

BTW, my car is standard US height and not lowered (just a phat C4S butt and an oversized pilot).

    TIA!

Re: Car bottoms out on very sharp downhill turns.

I get the same thing in my C2S. The plastic thing under the nose scraps under hard braking into downhill corners. It's the same thing that scrapes when I back out of a steep driveway. Eventually it'll fall off and you won't have to hear it anymore.

Take care, bud - should'nt be a problem with a mild impact only. Greetings from the Emirates lounge in Dubai

Re: Car bottoms out on very sharp downhill turns.

I've driven my TT through some really tight switchback corners and I've managed to touch my front lip on a few of those turns. I don't recall ever having bottomed out though. What does it feel like when that happens?

Re: Car bottoms out on very sharp downhill turns.

When you say bottoms out, which part(s) are hitting the ground? The experience I have in similar conditions is that the small air dams leading the two front tires scrape. If you're doing that then you're driving it right!

Thanks a lot! You guys are right! I felt the air dams and they're scraped up a bit/ pretty rough, but still intact.

It all makes sense now: the sound, very slight bumping feel, but no effect on steering. I LOVE this car!

    Thanks, PJ!

I hope your trip is enjoyable, safe and successful!

BTW, I thought you would've eliminated the air dams on the "baby" during your test drive through the Rheinland.

Re: Car bottoms out on very sharp downhill turns.

Don't worry SVNSVN, some contact by the plastic air dams in front of your front tyres is unavoidable. Just try not to scrape the actual front lip on the ground!

My car is 10mm lower than yours - believe me I am very careful too - I still have the central rubber strip under my car. I baby it over speed bumps. But when the coast is clear, I floor it!!

Re: Car bottoms out on very sharp downhill turns.

Thanks, Easy! Do your tires ever rub because of the -10mm suspension? I thought that was what I was experiencing initially.

    Interesting, is a -20mm 20mm lower than a non-PASM 997 and just 10mm lower than a PASM-equipped 997?

    I didn't know that!

Re: Car bottoms out on very sharp downhill turns.

    That's right

If the non S 997 is the 'norm', then a PASM 997S is 10mm lower than the norm. -20mm is a further 10mm lower than a PASM car and a GT3 is a further 10mm lower than a -20mm car. So a GT3 is actually a -30mm car!

It's funny - it makes a nonsense of the sales talk of UK dealers. They keep harping on about how the -20mm car is not suitable for the UK. Then how is a GT3 not unsuitable either? They just don't understand the product they are selling!

Re: Car bottoms out on very sharp downhill turns.

No worries SVNSVN As for tyres touching, no way has that ever happened to me. I don't know if it is even possible. I highly doubt it...

When I was driving it in Europe this past Summer, I regularly found that taking hairpin turns too quickly caused my underside rubber strips to make contact with the road. I learnt to slow down a lot. That didn't make me very popular with the cars behind me but I didn't care - I prefer to look after my own car.

Hairpins look dramatic in the photos but they aren't good to drive fast on if you have such a low car. Unless of course, one just doesn't care at all about underside damage accumulating...

I think you're very much like I am i.e. you want to enjoy your car to the full BUT you want to take great care of it too. Some other people seem much less bothered about looking after their car...I guess our cars were lucky in the type of owners they ended up with!
