What Happens To Our 997s After Trade In?

Traded my 997S for a TT about a month ago (took the depreciation hit which was "worth it" by the HP/Tq difference of the TT). Now I wonder where my old car is though I don't miss it very much.

I "know" they head off to auctions or dealer networks somewhere, but where do they go after that? How long do they stay parked in a lot somewhere? How does the new buyer and my pre-owned car connect? What's the market like in the USA/Canada/EU for really nice low mileage 997/S cars?

Awwwwh..., now I'm feeling kinda choked up..., maybe I DO miss my old car and hope it got a good home by now... .

Re: What Happens To Our 997s After Trade In?

Did you lease it? If so it probably gets blown out at a Manheim auction.

    Carfax

Every once in a while on another car forum I am on people post when they have an unlimited month of carfax. People usually throw up VINs to have checked out. Maybe some one here has an unlimited carfax for this month that wouldn't mind running your old VIN. You'll see if its been registered some where since you sold it.

    Re: Carfax

If it's in pretty good condition and saw regular service from the dealer, it goes in the nationwide pre-owned fleet computer.

If it's in so-so condition, they send it off to the wholesaler auction. Usually Manheim. It's more cost efficient for them to take a small hit on the cost now rather than tie up money as it sits on the lot waiting for a new owner.

    Re: Carfax

i think they chop up the car for some spare parts...

    Re: Carfax

your car is probably in the hands of a very happy owner, who didn't pay full price like the rest of us, especially if you traded in a car in mint condition :-)

LOL! Good point. I feel soooo much better now! (I'm now totally resigned to the absurdity of owning P-cars)

    Re: Carfax

In December of 2003, I bought a 2004 model Carrera 4S with only 425 miles. The car had been sold at the local dealer in Orlando in October of 2003, only 2 months before I bought it. The original sticker price was on the north side of $89k and I got the car for only $75,500. I traded it in for $65k at another dealer in South Florida for a brand new 997 S for which I placed the order at that dealer. They knocked $3k from the MSRP price but I should have kept the 996 C4S as it was probably the best purchase I've made ever, from a financial point of view. I put 20k miles on the car and still traded it for $9500 less than what I bought it for and I bought that car with only 2 months of previous ownership and only 425 miles! Now, with my 2006 Carrera S, I know I've lost about $50k if I trade it in for another car at that same dealer. My car was specified with enough options to make its price soar to $122k+!!! The dealer offered me only $73k in trade in with in May 2007, when the car was only 14 months old and had 7500 miles! Now it has 12800 miles and is 19 months old, so its trade in price is most likely less than that! I guess I am stuck with my car for a couple of more years until I can justify (in my mind only) losing so much money by adding more miles and owning it more time. I should have kept the C4S or bought a 993 Turbo or a late 996 Turbo with low miles.

So, in conclusion, if I were to get rid of my car now, someone out there would be enjoying for a fraction of what I paid for my car, a very near mint condition 2006 Carrera S with X51 and Aerokit Cup. A car with an original sticker price of over $122k for maybe somewhere in the $80k range. I find that hard to swallow so I will stay where I am for now.

Where are the best markets for used Porsche's? Probably the major metropolitan areas, so the cars aren't moved a long way from where they are sold, unless they can't be sold quickly. And if they are low mileage and pass the 100 point official inspection and still have some warranty time left, then they have a good chance of selling quickly. A sharp dealer is not going to tie up money in a car that doesn't move at least as fast as the new ones they are forced to take to maintain their quota of new cars from the Porsche factories.

The 2005 997 S cabriolet I just pre-traded never even got to the lot at the dealership, it was sold to "a local friend of the owner" the same day I dropped it off.

There's a good lesson here....you rarely get back what has been invested in a car's options, particularly if they were cosmetic options. If you're selling the car yourself, it may make it more attractive to a particular buyer, but you're not likely to get any significant premium, over what the standard car is worth. The trade-in prices dealers use are based on "standard cars with standard options".
