    USA Turbo

What are arguments for a German not to buy a Turbo in the USA and reimport it to Germany? What would it cost?

    Re: USA Turbo

    Price + 10% customs + 19% Import Tax + Transport.

Auto-Bild calculated in their last issue the import of a caymans S from the states.

In the end you could save just 700 EUR.

    Blueflame

    Re: USA Turbo

You may want to have a look into the latest Autobild copy - there are some examples/calculations and also some web-links.

If I recall correctly, in case of a (non-S) 997 you may save 12k Euro or so (after considering import duties/tax, transport/insurance, paperwork/registration). In case of a TT the savings should be significantly higher

    Disadvantages:
    > warranty ?!
    > paperwork hassle (though there are some service providers delivering the registered car to your home for a moderate handling fee).

EDIT: blueflame was faster Yes, in case of the Cayman the Euro -gain is not worth the hassle - should be different for a car which costs twice as much

    Re: USA Turbo

Why does it not keep its warranty?
Actually was thinking about a 1 year old car.

    Will look for Auto Bild

    Re: USA Turbo

I believe that each car gets warranty coverage specific to the region in which it's sold in. A car purchsed in Europe would be covered by Porsche over there. Not sure if it's all over Europe or just specific to that country. I do know that if you were to buy a car from Porsche in Canada, it'd be covered by PCNA (Porsche of North America) in both the US and perhaps even Mexico. Highly doubtful that there would be warranty coverage for a USA car if purchased here and brought to Germany.

    Re: USA Turbo

I think atomic80 is right (this kind of warranty policy certainly is a mean trick to avoid grey imports), but I'm not 100% sure about the legal background.

Though actually the warranty in Germany says otherwise:

"Gewährleistung/Garantie kann weltweit gegenüber jedem Porsche Partner geltend gemacht werden."

Maybe this stipulation looks different if you buy a Porsche in the US

that was my understanding as well. I live in the US and move back to Germany. Should be able to bring my car. I belive that would be an easy court case...

    Re: USA Turbo

Court case? You'd take Porsche to court on warranty coverage?

    Re: USA Turbo

Looks O.K. (p.5 "Warranty outside the US") - they just apply the terms of the P-warranty in Germany if you show up with your car at a Porsche Zentrum in Germany

    http://www.porsche.com/filestore.aspx/de...iletype=default

If you're living in the US and will move to Germany you even may avoid import duties and German VAT
    http://www.germany.info/relaunch/info/consular_services/customs/pkw.html

    Now I'm envious

    Re: USA Turbo

No I live in Germany but am thinking due to pending family to switch from GT3 to TT. And given that only the bumpers are different and the cars are not driven very hard in the US (on average) it might be an interesting way to save some cash.

    Re: USA Turbo

    Reason for warrenty differences:

Cars made for USA are built to higher standard than those made for export to other countries.

Engines last four years, trim, bodywork, components are meant to last for four full years in the USA.

In EU it's two years, right?

Goes to show why you shouldn't buy a Porsche in any country that doesn't have a warrenty.

This "sliding-scale" quality of coverage rule applies to everything: airline ticket prices, car insurance, cell phone contracts, surgical/medical procedures.

When you buy an extended warrenty (after original mfgr's runs out) MAKE SURE YOU READ THE FINE PRINT. You'll find that "compensated endorsers" are the only guys who claim the extended warrenty paid off for them.

    Re: USA Turbo

Not for a minute would I believe that a US car is build to a higher standard...that is pure BS! all said it is worth to buy a car in the US and bring it back home...

Maybe with a smaller manufacturer, but not for Porsche. All the chassis roll off the same line, there are minor tweaks such as the small bumperettes on the rears of cars, but thats about it.

You are likely referring to the earlier days when some cars not bound for the US lacked door bracing/etc, such as on Ferrari 360s (many people importing grey market cars from the EU into the USA had to add such supports in order to Federalize their cars).

Even on the E46 M3 with launch control, many people had their warrantys voided by using it too many times in the EU, however, when the car came to the USA, they did not remove the feature (toned down a bit admittedly). BMW had to compensate for it, because in the USA there is a law stating that you cannot void a warranty for using a feature of the car. Thus many people get their clutches replaced under warranty even though they have abused their Launch control in the USA.

This simply does not apply to this thread regarding the 997 Turbo

LoL - I guess MMD made a joke
Warranty differences have nothing to do with the product itself - it just has to do with the different competitive situation in the different markets.

With the same logic you could argue that the US P-cars have the worst quality, because they are sold at such low prices (compared to other markets)
