Ordering a new 997... now or later?

    Hello,

Coming out of a Cayman into a 997 (need the rear seats!) and haven't found what works for me (price & spec against new) in the used arena so are considering placing an order for a new one.

I have been told if we place the order now it will be a Dec build for Jan delivery but I'm hoping to squeeze that to Nov build.

My question is though, would it be worth me holding out until the facelift is available? My dealer has no firm news on when it will be available to order or delivery on that. Would a facelift model right after the current severely devalue the current at resale or will it be about the same?

I'd be intending to keep the car for about 2 - 3 years.

    Thanks

    Ben

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

    I would just wait .

I have been wating 3 years , its no big deal ...

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

If you intend to keep the car for 2-3 years I would say get the facelift. DFI at least if not DSG too. And S not std.

    Wait

The new car will be launched (supposedly) in Spring and on sale in US in Fall. In Blighty you probably want to get your order in soon (as you seem to have to wait forever to get one) and specify that you want the updated version with DFI.

If you can't wait, buy a 3 year used 997 from your OPC so you take a smaller depreciation hit and order later when you have a better idea of the spec you really want/need.

Now the much more important question is will England beat France???

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

Get the car asap. 2-3 yrs from now it's going to be the next 911 anyway so which 997 you have isn't going to make that much a difference. IMO w/ Porsche you'll never feel ahead trying to get the latest version, there will ALWAYS be something newer right on your heals so may as well enjoy the car sooner.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

FWIW I've been struggling with this conundrum and have plumped for the option Le Chef suggests.

Now, all I need to do is find a reasonable used 997S in Black with Black with manual gearbox. Sounds easy doesn't it?

Two weeks on, I'm still looking.....

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

Presumably there's a bunch of guys with the facelift-waiting strategy, when the FL is definite these orders will be unleashed creating a longer wait.

Everybody is going to be "outdated" sooner or later. My goal would just be to avoid being the guy who misses the facelift by one car.

BTW, say you get the current model now; think how bad you would feel in a year or more when you're at a stoplight and a guy pulls up next to you with "new" _tailights_!

Money-wise? It's all about _losing_ money at trade-in or resale time. Being in negative territory is bad no matter if it's somewhat bad or just plain bad. At least you're not gonna be in the verrrrry bad zone with the "old" car.

You could get diagnosed with a major disease (or worse) while waiting for the new change-for-changes-sake tailights.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

I just bought another C2S as I couldn't get a GT3 new-I could have waited for another 10-12 months for a 997S with DFI but I figure DFI is as much for emmissions/economy as it is for power. Plus I'm not sure I like the new ENORMOUS mirrors. Anyway the only issue is residual as far as I can see because 997 mk1 will take a dive when mark 2 arrives and then recover a bit if you have the right car in the right spec (ie don't overspec it).

So I'd say if you are going to keep it while then get one asap. If you plan to change it sooner rather than later then wait.

If you can find the right used one at a price which is attractive/undamaged/OPC guaranteed then that might be a good option but be sure you know where it came from and what it has had done/not done!

Me? I just did my 3rd black/black 911 in a row. Didn't lose a huge amount on either of the predecessors-although as MMD says its all about losing money

So there's still hope for you!

I guess it depends on if you like the face lift a lot better? Based on the pics, I don't. The performance change/upgrade shouldn't be that significant.

Yeah! Good point! Huccum nobody asks this excellent question?

The car's the "same" except for cosmetic changes it _AND_ it's not even THAT attractive a change.

Yeah, THIS is the real deal

    Re: Wait

I say wait for the facelift, it is too close to buy a car now.

I gotta agree with MMD and SVNSVN. In fact, I did. It was spy shots of the facelift that finally drove me over the edge to buy my '07. I think the pre-facelift car looks better.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

The great thing about a Porsche is it never goes out of style. I know several Porsche owners who still enjoy and love their 964 and 993, and have no desire for a 997. If you don't need the latest of everything, I would say get the 997 and start having fun sooner than waiting for the facelift.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

    A) Get it now and enjoy livin', who knows how tomorrow will look like!
    B) The probability that Porsche will use the introduction of DFI for a price increase is fairly high. This might balance the expected depreciation of the pre-facelift model.
    C) I doubt that the performance improvement will be that significant.
    D) I don't like the pubescent new front with the cross-eyed look as well as the fugly new backlights anyway.
    E) Who says that the new car will be better in all respects and that Porsche does the facelift to do something good for the consumer solely and not for its own cost savings?
    F) If I want something, I want it know.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

    WAIT!

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

life is short, live now. 997 is a great car! can't imagine facelift will be that dramatic.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

Guys, slow down with this "get the car now, live you life as there is no tomorrow". You can buy the car and die sooner too (God forbid!) It all depends on the point of view ...

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

If you can live with the Cayman for another year, just wait...

Actually... the new tail lights are available as an option now (and I've put them on my 'virtual' order)

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

Thank you all for some excellent points! I think all sides of the arugment are covered, including some I never thought of.

Decision will be.... NOW Reasons - as found above!

Dealer has an option for a late Nov / early Dec delivery.

PS. Need to get out of the Cayman as we now need rear seats (without the Cayman won't get used)

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

I'm afraid you were mistaken. The current CXF/XXF option is just red tail light covers. Otherwise, it's the same old tech, and the same shape.

The facelifted 997 gets LED tail lights, with a different shape.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

Agree with The Groom - your dealer deserves a thwak on the nose for selling you a pup.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

Pikey-- curious any impressions you can offer of the cayman. i know someone thinking about buying one. did you love love the car? is it only the rear seats taht you are looking for? having you driven the 997s (my car of choice)... thank you and enjoy your new 911!

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

Dealer told me today new facelift will have Ipod, Bluetooth, DFI worth about 7-10hp (not 30) and optional DSG - maybe 7 speed.

I'm in the same situation, don't know whether to wait, order pre-facelift new, or go second hand..

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

I ordered this week. For Dec build. I reckon it depends on why you are buying new. Buying new is actually a crazy act. I don't see that anyone's rational head ever made the "buy new" decision, always someother part. For me it was an impulse buy, if I'd waited I'd of lost the impulse and where's the fun in that! If want the latest then you'll have to wait. If you want the best value buy 2nd hand. Otherwise just do it. If it turns out you made the wrong choice, win the lottery and swap later.

Re: Ordering a new 997... now or later?

fwiw, i was on the verge of ordering one, then i found the photos on the web. As a result, I'm waiting.

The dealer has no clue when it's going to arrive but they rekon it's gonna be something like mid 08, but that's neither here nor there, i guess.

Yes, there's always something better around the corner. That's something Porsche's been really good at, every model imo has been better than what it follows (as opposed to being indifferent or worse). Personally I'm not too bothered with the lights and so on, more about DSG and the power increase. While there's something better around the corner, I'd prefer not to get a car so chornologically near a facelift. It's not as if the money is buring a hole in my pocket... just my 0.02
