    997 Test Review Times-London

Here is a recent review from the Times, who identify the change in steering feel, but still regard the car as excellent
http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,12389-1158053,00.html. (The link is not copying correctly you will have to either go to www.timesonline.co.uk and hit the motoring button, or type in the end of the link to go there directly)

The Telegraph have also reviewed it on 26th June, but have yet to post the review to their online site, but will come soon.

    Re: 997 Test Review Times-London

Thanks for posting this Times review. Sounds like Tip doesn't work too well in 997....the F1-style transmission will be eagerly awaited by many....

    Re: 997 Test Review Times-London

Interesting - some magazine articles have described the new tiptronic as "much improved", whereas 4car and The Times have come out with criticism in the last few days.

It'll be interesting to see who is right (especially as I was intending specifying mine with a tip because of a back problem).

    Re: 997 Test Review Times-London

how good is the Tip in the 996? if say left in auto mode?

    Re: 997 Test Review Times-London

Marketing/Business Fundamentals 101....if P doesn't sell enough high-profit (i.e., 996TTS, CGT and GT3) cars that address its buyer demographic needs/demands, P is toast....and P becomes part of GM or Hyundai or some other illustrous conglomerate.....purists often detest F1 transmissions, SUVs, air cond, cupholders, PSM, antilock brakes, blah, blah, blah.....but we live in a capitalist world (thankfully)....not one man/one vote, it's one dollar/one vote....and last I checked F1-style transmissions have won the election (F, Lambo, AM and BMW have already figured that out)....and P is clearly behind on addressing its buyer demands....the 360/SL55/996TT-type buyer clearly wants an effective F1-style/auto paddle shift transmission....a lot of these guys live in major urban areas and commute in these cars as they work a cell phone/Blackberry to help pay for wkend excursions in the curves.....

Bang on. One of the beauties of a modern 911 is the combination of awesome performance with practicality. Hell, even Schumacher uses buttons to change gear. Having said that the Tiptronic still needs a lot of improvement, and we know Porsche is working on it.

    Re: 997 Test Review Times-London

I agree - if you want an automatic "sports car" buy an SL. If you want a pukka sports car buy a Porsche with Manual transmission. Or wait for the double clutch flappy paddle thingy which I am sure will be brilliant - cos it is still a manual transmission, not a slushmatic hydraulic pump.

    Re: 997 Test Review Times-London

Why wait? Order a tip now and get another Pounds3,000 deposit down for the DSG when it becomes available. The tip on my current car works fine once you wake it up...the only trouble is that it sometimes needs a substantial kick in order to bring it to life!

Personally I'd rather not be crippled with sciatica every time I drive more than a few miles in traffic, so for me a clutchless transmissionis a must. But hey, some people might think that the pain might be worth it.....!
