Re: Rear main seal oil leak

They add a few ounces of an oil additive, that will glow yellow under black light. The Porsche Regional guy wanted to add this material, in case the oil that was present after my RMS was changed, was emanating from another area, or just oil that became visible, by dirt, from the RMS change.

Had an RMS leak on my 986S. You will know if it's a RMS leak because 70% of the time there's always a few drops of oil on your garage floor the morning after you park it after a drive. For me the other 30% of the time there were no new drops (I have no idea why). Put a clean sheet of newspaper under the car and see if you have consistent leakage.

Area circled in red is from where RMS leaks appear.

I've circled an area in white. I have no idea what that area is but it seems oily in your picture and I saw a 997 that I was looking to buy also look oily like it does in this picture.

That's the "oil pan", circled in red is the drain plug for the oil.

The brown/yellow is "cosmoline" a waxy substance sprayed on by factory for God knows what reason?

If you saw darker oil in this area it could be from a leaky drain plug washer, or perhaps more likely, a few too-loosely-torqued bolts seen around perimeter off white circle. (just a guess).

    Thanks for the insight

So essentially this vehicle doesnt have any type of shield to protect the engine? I mean mistakenly going over a road bump could hit the engine oil pan directly?

Yes...I've heard of one case here from a local mechanic where a 996 cracked it's sump on a speed bump and all the oil leaked out and the driver continued to drive and damaged the engine.

Yeah, it's crazy man. If I remember correctly our own RC smacked the "oil pan" on the street while bottoming out in a stock 997 Turbo (TTs are slightly lower than a Carrera).

Re: Rear main seal oil leak

As I mentioned above, I found an oil leak on my garage floor last week .
    I have the 997 S ( ~ 10 k miles)
I dropped the car off this morning and it turned out to be the RMS .
I was told by my Service Manager that RMS leaks on the 997's are extremely rare, since they switched to a different type of seal
(that makes me feel a lot better .Why me ? Lol )

Anyway , since I have the manual , it only takes a few hours and the car will be ready this afternoon (they only need to drop the transmission, not the engine )

With the automatic, both engine and transmission would have to be taken out ( in case someone is interested )

I was informed that this one will "last forever"
    Yeah, right.
If it's no longer a problem, why do they just happen to keep a spare one ready in the shop ? Lol

PS: They were just unwrapping a spanking new GT3 RS outside as I was leaving . I never cared for the lime green, but in real life, the car is stunning . Black interior with matching green stitching .

I asked if that was my loaner . Lol
    ( I just got a Cayenne S )
