    Aston Martin 'DB5'

    Spy Shot: Aston Martin 'DB5'
Aston Martin unveiled the AM V8 "concept car" at the Detroit Motor Show - and now here's the real thing, snapped out testing round Germany's Nurburgring circuit. The AM V8, known as the 'baby Aston', is the Ford Premier Automotive Group's proposed 911 rival; set to cost from around Pounds60,000 when it goes on sale in 2005, it should certainly give the Porsche a run for its money. Its final name hasn't yet be confirmed, but insiders are referring to it as the 'DB5', reviving a classic badge. Aston expects this model to play a major role in upping its annual output, and for it to account for 40-50 percent of all Aston sales.

The first Aston to be built on the company's all-new aluminium platform, it is also the first Aston to be built at the former Rover site at Gaydon, where ultimately the next-generation DB7 and Vanquish will be built. Styled by Henrik Fisker, it has a wide-opening hatchback, a generous luggage area and a two-seat interior inspired by that of the Vanquish. Power comes from a Jaguar-derived 4.3-litre V8, likely to give a good 370bhp, and a 500bhp-plus supercharged R version is also said to be on the cards. The engine is front mid-mounted - positioned well back in the engine bay to give optimum front-:rear axle weight distribution. Six-speed manual transmission will be standard, a sequential-shift auto optional, and both gearboxes will be rear-mounted.

I think I may want this instead of the 997?

    Re: Aston Martin 'DB5'

Good to see someone giving P a potential run for its money at the $100Kish price point...ain't competition great?...and who better as a competitor than a P alumnus like Bez? I'll certainly be an early buyer of DB5 if it offers a focused, visceral driving experience....ideally, without 997's gimmicky, dubious variable ratio steering and with P-like cheap, infrequent servicing schedule....

This car will definitely be prettier on the inside and outside than the 997, but I will be surprised if it drives as well...

    Re: Aston Martin 'DB5'

well if the praise for the DB9 is anything to go by in that car fulfilling its purpose as a grand tourer, then I see no reason as to why the DB5 wouldn't fulfill it's role in being an actual sports car. With Ulrich Bez being at the reins of the DB5's development Im sure this car will get close, if not surpass the 911's driving experience. I know it's a bit early and a bit bold to say that, but I have faith. Not only that, but lets just say I have a few good freinds who have let me in on somethings....very significant things.

I have also heard positive comments about AM from sources as interesting/credible as F itself...apparently, after they had chance to drive DB9, they identified AM as their most serious competitive threat esp vs 575/612.....so it sounds like Bez has delivered a viable competitor in the DB9.....now it's a marketing battle vs F's entrenched buyer base (and that of Merc's SL55/SL65 loyalists). But let's not underestimate the importance of marketing....Gallardo is a viable competitor to the 4yo 360 from a driving standpoint, but G appears to be flailing from a sales standpoint.

However, I agree that until we drive DB5 we're aggressively speculating re: its competitiveness, but, from limited data available to-date on 997S, I suspect this gimmicky steering will be its Achille's heel unless our own 997S driving experience proves otherwise....

    Re: Aston Martin 'DB5'

Looks great! Thanks for the pics!

    Re: Aston Martin 'DB5'

    That is one beautiful car!

    Re: Aston Martin 'DB5'

Looks nice, but wait to hear that the Ford engine and Ford car platform (ala Ford Focus) is being used with this car. You know Ford has a great history of making sport cars, take Mustangs for example :-)

    Re: Aston Martin 'DB5'

I don't about the engine yet but the AMV8's platform is fortunately based on the aluminum V-H platform of the DB7 but shortened to its smaller size. But Ford does tend to push engines and platforms on models of its "other" brands, the Vantage V12 engine is based on two Ford Duratec V6 engines (used in the Mondeo (Europe) & Taurus (US)) put together, and this V6 Duratec itself was originally designed by Porsche for Ford , the Jaguar X-Type uses the Ford Mondeo chaisis, and the first X-Type diesel version used a Mondeo's weak diesel engine

    Re: Aston Martin 'DB5'

    thanks!

although i like the car on the pictures a lot, IMO aston is getting a problem -- their cars are all too similar looking. and strangely the cheaper cars are more beautiful. the DB9 is nicer looking than the vanquish -- with nearly the same power-to-weight-ratio. even with unlimited money to spend i would go for the DB9 and not the vanquish.

and the car on these pictures is even nicer looking with its compact stance.

Interesting point...although aside from Enzo, I would suspect vast majority of F nuts w/ample financial resources strongly prefer entry-level 360 to 575/612 in terms of both styling and driving dynamics.....however, I doubt P has to worry about Boxster dislodging any of its more expensive (and profitable) models.

I see what you mean, but the Vanquish is now the oldest model, so should be next in line for updating.

And we couldn't really expect them to make DB7 and DB5(?) less beautiful just to make life easier for the Vanquish!

indeed the vanquish is next, and will use the same aluminum platform as the DB9 / V8(db5?) Bez said this himself
