That's what they claim. The truth is, we are governed by countless regulations and you are more likely to be publically humiliated for driving fast (not necessarily dangerously) than a rapist or a child mollester, who will get all kinds of civil rights groups running to his aid.

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

10 weeks in jail is nothing compared with his second punishment, which withdrawn license for 3 years.

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

176MPH in germany nothing happens, no-one says anyting.

Do 130mph or more on an empty road and all hell breaks loose anywhere else.

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

The BBC News report had that he was convicted of doing 176mph in a 70mph zone. For that I would most certainly throw the book, or any other heavy object, at such stupidity! What would Germany or any other EU county do if one were clocked in excess of 150mph in a school zone?

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

It wasn't a school zone. 70mph is the UK motorway speed limit. Unfortunately that's the fastest one can legally drive on public roads in the UK.

Like easy I'll nibble at your bait. Why did you type something so obvious and useless?

I believe it was at night on a stretch of highway with little or no traffic and few if any outlets.

if ok in germany during the day and in TRAFFIC, why not in other countries?

I'm not one of these guy's who bench races endlessly in the boards here about pointless top speeds of various supercars, but why must everything be dummed down for losers?

Why not 120 on US super highways? Why not install electric zappers in the seats of cars to jolt LOSERS who are going too slow in fast lanes?

The motivation for your comment is akin to the greens who want everyone driving a prius.

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

Recerx in what country do you reside?
As for doing 120mph on the US Interstate system, geographically speaking we have several areas where one could for hours on end. Practically speaking we have far too many stupid drivers on the roads.

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

AP wire story about Ohio speeders from this morning:

(COLUMBUS, OH) -- State troopers issued 1,416 speeding tickets last year to drivers going more than 100 mph, an offense that Ohio labels a minor misdemeanor and is punishable by a $150 fine.

In Ohio, local judges have leeway to impose court costs and other fines for speeding and reckless operation, another common charge in speeding cases that is also a misdemeanor in Ohio.

Madison County Municipal Court Judge David Picken said he recently ordered a motorcyclist who clocked 167 mph to the maximum punishment the charges warranted - fines totaling $440, a six-month license suspension and a court-ordered driver's safety course. He felt it wasn't enough.

"A speed like that should warrant more," Picken said. "That's ludicrous, and it's blatant ignorance of regard for life and limb."

Judges in Virginia have recently begun jailing drivers ticketed for going faster than 90 mph. Beginning this year in Hawaii, jail time or community service is required for any speed higher than 80 mph, according to the National Motorists Association. In Kentucky, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, high speeds can earn a driver an automatic license suspension. In Tennessee and New Mexico, speeds over 100 mph automatically assesses eight points on a license.

A standard Ohio speeding ticket adds two points to a driving record, but a driver is usually assessed four points for a violation that's 20 mph or more over the speed limit. Under state law, a driver's license is suspended when 12 points have been accumulated within a two year period. While jail isn't an option, some judges require speeders to make a court appearance. For example, no one caught driving over 30 mph over the speed limit near Circleville - about 25 miles south of Columbus - can just mail in their fine.

"I want to look them in the eye and have a little remediation chat," Circleville Municipal Judge John Adkins said.

An analysis of Ohio police records by The Columbus Dispatch showed that unsafe speed contributed to 14 percent of the 70,895 crashes investigated by the Highway Patrol in 2006. Most of those ticketed were driving high-performance automobiles such as BMWs, Audis and Acuras.

However, troopers say even compact family cars like Kias can reach triple digit speeds. Police records showed one person was ticketed for driving at least 100 mph in a 35 mph-zone in 2006, and six drivers were cited for reaching triple digits in 45-mph zones.

The top speed of all recorded citations in 2006 was 135 miles an hour, clocked by a motorcyclist on a smooth, flat stretch of Route 33 near Lancaster in central Ohio. Troopers said they'll go to great lengths to catch people speeding over 100 mph, including recording license plate numbers and then mailing tickets several days later, or sending a plane or helicopter to track speeding motorcyclists.

Trooper Mark Bisel, who patrols a rural part of Route 33 near the Honda plant in Marysville in central Ohio, ticketed 10 drivers going faster than 100 mph last year, more than any other trooper in the area. Each person knew exactly how fast they were going, he said. At high speeds, drivers can't make up excuses.

"Automakers don't put the speedometer in the trunk," he said. "It's right there between your hands and where your eyes can look."

Currently/temporarily in tennessee, but most of my life in massachusetts. In both places, the highway systems would easily support such speeds away from the congested beltways in major metro areas.

It's all common sense. Cars should have a rating just as tires do for the speed. It would be like the graduated tax system. Cars like ours built to do the autobahn at 150+ all day would be allowed in the fast lane at 120.

You have seen the commuter lanes for cars with more than 1 person. Do a fast lane in rural areas.

No reason not to other than busy body types imposing their view over yours.

    I'm a libertarian.

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

Would argue police globally should spend more time and resources ticketing/revoking licenses for unsafe driving, like driving too fast vs weather/traffic; too limited following distances; DUI; distracted driving (phones/texting); running red lts/stop signs; using left lane for cruising; driving vehicle w/poorly secured cargo which may cause accid, etc etc.....errant extreme speeders are prob minor issue in terms of total death/injuries caused annually vs many other driving offenses....

Even on derestricted AB, suspect a Munich/Frankfurt plutocrat driving 599/65 and deemed to cause crash (involving serious injuries/death) due to excess speed vs conditions will likely face full wrath of criminal/civil litigation from ambitious prosecutors/litigators and a class-warfare-minded media and general public....

Suspect Darwinian selection often prevails in terms of cars driven and driving risk/reward decisions....most guys who can afford and choose to drive latest high-perf cars know when/where it makes sense to drive in more spirited manner...those who don't, face serious poss consequences (incl jail) if injuries/death involved....speeding tkts are trivial risks in macro-scheme of risks to affluent driver w/ample legal and philanthropic resources....

But prob far more non-affluent guys w/<200hp, 10yo cars/SUVs driving at <80MPH cause more injuries/death annually to others b/c of their poor/irresponsible driving....not a lot for them to lose in life anyway.....so their risk/reward equations...and judgments (or lack thereof) tend to "differ"...they don't hand out certain cars/SUVs and occupations to just anyone....

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

WBH, you should be on wheel of fortune, you'd never have to buy a vowel

    Re: 176mph = 10 weeks jail!

I saw this story on the news last week -the guy was a rental car employees, and took out Porsche Turbo after being denied by the boss. Needless to say he was also fired.
