    PSM RUMOUR

Hi, I just returned from the Cannonball8000 which was awesome. I was having a drunken conversation with a porsche owner on the last evening about PSM. This sounds like some urban myth, but he tells me and I quote "If you turn the PSM off, and click the handbrake up 1 notch then this will completely disable the PSM, unlike just turning off the PSM"

Now Im not convinced, this does sound like Garbage to me.... My car is now on a transporter back to the UK so I cannot test to see, so if anyone wants to test for me and let me know, that would be great.

Personally, Im not that into doing this as I want to keep my car in perfect condition and not smashed to pieces. If nobody tests, I will test on friday when I get the car back....

    Just interested to know.

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

    It is true.

I think garbage, I've tracked my car with and without PSM and I can assure you there was nothing holding the car back with PSM off. It was a real handful and should not be tried on an unfamiliar track or on the street for that matter.

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

turbosteff, anymore info on it being true? what was the difference like?

If you click the handbrake up 1 notch then you have only rear-wheel drive. I tested it only one time because it is quite dangerous
I got wheel spin on the rear-wheels although I drove cup tires at that day.

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

This means the handbrake 1-click trick turns our cars into $190k Gt2s. Is Porsche now run by gaming software programmers?

I think turbosteff means that the handbrake trick does switch off PSM not PTM. Thus, the 997TT is still AWD - however, without PSM.

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

What's the difference between "completely disabling PSM" and "turning it off" anyways?

This sounds like pure BS to me.

I seriously doubt that this little maneuver disables the all wheel drive, and even if it did, Turbos would NOT be GT2's.

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

When you 'turn off' PSM with the button on the console, it's actually NOT disabled, it only went to sleep. When you touch the brakes it comes back on to save your butt. So basically it's still doing some monitoring in the background. Completely diabling PSM means it will not save you when you overcook a turn, it will watch you die.

Switching PSM off (using the switch) deactivates PSM - until you hit the brakes in an emergency situation. Disabling it completely means that it will not be reactivated - even in an acute emergency. So please: be cautious - danger ahead.

More like 'danger in head' . Definitely not a smart thing to do.

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

Lol I will try it and let you know... Lets hope it will work..

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

I tried this "method" yesterday and it doesn't seem to work.
Hitting the brakes seems to put PSM back in business.

Caution: turning PSM off means it stays off, unless you hit the brakes. It doesn't come on like on other cars (Mercedes) when you do something stupid. Maybe this is why people think that the handbrake method works.

To make sure it works...or not, I'll try again this weekend on a more "closed" area.

Christian, does the PSM reengage as soon as you tap the brake or do you need to activate the ABS? Might try it the next time I have the opportunity, but I'd rather not cause an expensive wreck .

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

It works!! I tried it, and it seems like more power is diverted to the rear wheels, which makes the car skid sideways. Do it on an empty road though. ( Just to confirm method: PSM off, Sport on, Handbrake one notch up).

    buzz

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

And you keep it one notch up all the time?

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

    Yes sir.

That's not true, touching the brakes does NOT reactivate PSM. you have to stand on the brakes and activate ABS for the PSM to come back. I have tracked my car with PSM off and it never came back as long as the ABS did not activate

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

Aldogt3, Zagreb was good we didnt see too much of it but it was fun, and the police there were friendly and let you get away with alot for a fine which makes it a good place in my eyes. germany was not so kind, we were banned from germany and 27 cars were impounded which was a big problem for the entire rally. It really put a downer on the rally, although it was still great fun. I did it the previous year without problems and the whole thing was fantastic..... Im not complaining as it meant I got to use the porsche to its full potential.

So some believe the handbrake trick to be true, and some are sceptical..... RC I would be pleased to hear the results of your test if you can find some wide open space....

Please nobody damage yourself or your car testing this out....

A conclusive result would be great.

    Re: PSM RUMOUR

PSM, works by applying brake/engine braking on the wheel which begins losing traction. Now, I have never tried the handbrake thing, but i guess it will work. Since it will "trick" the system into beleiving the PSM is working - since braking is being applied - and so the PSM will never kick in! Used to do something similar with an old MB which didnt have the "ESP off" button.
