WAY:Rumour has it that the Spyder will get the full GT treatment, and maybe even be called GT4 Spyder. Makes a lot of sense for Porsche. Development cost will be lower as it will share that with GT4 and they will be able to charge a much bigger premium as a GT car. Kaching!
Well that would make me try to swap my 981 Spyder - but availability is likely to be tight .
crayphile:acky:Some of the prototypes had GTS front. This will be changed to a proper "GT" front.
And the engine?
The usual 4-cylilnder with a larger turbo. AP will sell it as true motorsport kit, maybe with reference to the 935 Moby Dick. Small engine, large turbo, massive performance. Can't wait to hear the marketing waffle.

for the engine, remember that PAG has a very specific code/marketing for anything they release...
have you ever seen NA engine with such exhaust design? then I let you imagine the type of engine installed in those cars.

...they will sell less of it though
The price level around the GT3 / RS is saturated with models. The point with the GT4 was to offer a more affordable GT car which attracted clients at a lower price segment. I don't see why Porsche would price themselves out of this segment and push the GT4 to be a competitor to the GT3. Makes little sense IMHO.

So they can pick up some fustrated/disappointed GT3 customers who couldn't get one?

The GT4 will only be a competitor to the GT3, price & performance wise, if in the RS variant, if at all.

I doubt they would have sold 4000 of them if it had been at a higher price. I would not have paid more for mine, then I rather would have got a GT3.

And let's not forget how much more expensive the 991.2 GT3 got. The new GT4 will be considerable more expensive than the first gen. Selling only an GT4 RS model would make perfect sense IMO to justify the very high price increase, compared to the gen1.

Lets hope Porsche introduces a GT5 then which is cheaper
No matter how I twist and turn the argument I don't see the point of Porsche pricing themselves out of a segment which they just entered.

I think the GT4 will be priced like the last GT4 (plus the inevitable adjustment for inflation), but the GT4 RS will be fairly expensive (maybe with standard PDK-S). Maybe non-RS GT4 will be turbo-4 to act as halo for 718 range with standard 6spd manual?

This discussion reminds me of the 991.2 GTS pre-production period when many were convinced the GTS would have a NA engine, the only natural outcome of the discussion being wishful thinking. All these new models have to fit, or be made to fit, their particular niche within manufacturing and marketing parameters. Oddballs, one-offs, and outliers overlapping other models are not on the typical corporate agenda.
"Don't worry about avoiding temptation, as you grow older it will avoid you" Churchill
GT4 will take the spot of the GT3 in the price scale, GT3 will move towards GT3 RS and GT3 RS closer to GT3 RS.
You all really think Porsche knows there are waiting lists and limited production for GT3 and up cars and not do something about it?
The days of “value” Porsche are drawing to a close. The last thing vaguely price reasonably will be the high end Macans until they work their magic for these too... And to think Porsche will have full EV vehicules at Tesla prices is just pipe dream.

Why would Porsche give away their EV''s with Porsche handling and chasis, brakes, interiors, build quality, etc, etc, etc at Tesla prices? its like Porsche selling the Cayenne at Jeep prices

The Mission E base model is supposed to be introduced at a very interesting price. New product, new price consideration. This doesn't mean that top models and options will be cheap.

"Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder to use 911 GT3 flat six" (Autocar)
Featherweight drop-top will swap turbo four power for the high-revving unit of its sibling...
(21 November 2017)
Porsche is developing the most driver-focused version of its current 718 Boxster with the naturally aspirated, flat six engine of the latest 911 GT3.
The next Boxster Spyder, which will be heavily related to the 718 Cayman GT4, will use a 4.0-litre engine in place of the current hottest 718’s turbocharged 2.5-litre flat four.
Porsche Motorsport has stuck to the formula applied to the car’s predecessors, which have cemented themselves as the driver’s Boxster model since 2009, giving the car a more responsive drivetrain that will make it the most involving Boxster on sale.
“Natural aspiration is one of our main USPs,” Andreas Preuninger, head of GT car development at Porsche told Autocar earlier this year. “At Motorsport, we think we can achieve throttle response and immediacy a little bit better with an atmospheric high-revving engine than any kind of turbo.”
Output for the 4.0-litre unit is rated at 493bhp at 8250rpm in the 911 GT3, but the Boxster Spyder’s power may be slightly down on this in order to leave breathing space for its more expensive sibling.
The previous Spyder used a 3.8-litre flat six taken from the 911 Carrera of the time that was good for 370bhp. The recently launched Boxster GTS and related Cayman GTS use highly-strung four-pot engines with 361bhp, so the new Spyder will need to produce more power to cement itself as the top Boxster. An output of around 425bhp seems likely.
To signify its driver focus, the car will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, but those after maximum on track performance will be able to select the option of a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.
The Spyder will also go on a hefty diet, ditching cabin insulation and even a radio and air conditioning. The 718 Boxster’s electric folding soft top will also go, in its place a manually removable ‘tent top’. These weight savings will combine with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber to make the car the sharpest handling production Boxster yet produced.
Much of the design treatment applied the Boxster Spyder will mirror those featured on the GTS. The Cayman GT4 will likely get the same adjustments, along with a more prominent rear wing to signify its even harder status.
No arrival date for the Boxster Spyder has been set, but the recent reveal of the GTS suggests it could follow in the first half of 2018.

Almost all German car magazines "see" the flat 4 turbo in the next Spyder.
Slightly detuned GT3 engine is a "bit" too optimistic. New emission rules beginning Sep 2018, will not allow the GT3 engine to be used in the current form.
Porsche don't want to make the Boxster/Cayman platform too attractive. I dont expect more that 410HP, maximum. Some people are pretty sure that on their informations the next Spyder will only have around 385HP.

I'm afraid so... The exhaust system also indicates turbo, not n/a but I could be wrong.
GT4 RS could be a different story though...of course at a different price level as well.
