Thanks, PJ! It's proven now. The 335i is faster than the Cayman S from 0-80 and 0-100. Case closed.
Erm...lol?
Check the data that really counts: 0-200. As far as I can see the BMW is slower.
Not really interesting to be a nosehair ahead after 200 metres and then get owned the rest of the way. Not to mention the moment the road bends.
At 200 km/h a 1 second gap equals 55 meters.
But I guess one could always use this info when sitting in a bar and say " So you have a Porsche, but my Beemer is 0.1 second faster from 0-80 km/h!".

If you take just one thing from this road test, let it be this: never make the mistake of underestimating a BMW 335i. So you don't forget, we'll hit you with the numbers early: 5.4sec to 60mph and a scarcely believable 12.8sec to 100mph. To give that some perspective, a current E46 M3 is just a second quicker to three figures. Perhaps even more important in the real world are the in-gear times; this svelte, inconspicuous coupé will rip from 50-70mph in top gear 1.6sec faster than its M-badged brother. This is a sensationally rapid coupé.
So flexible and linear is the delivery that you can pull away from a standstill in third gear and just 21 seconds later be sitting on the rev limiter at 105mph. Fourth will take you from walking pace to 140mph.

What hasn't been discussed is in-gear times, which are the most relevant figures for day-to-day driving IMO, where the Beemer will smoke the Cayman S thanks to its superior torque.
80-120 kph in fifth gear:
Cayman S: 6.6 sec
335i: 6.2 sec
Carrera S: 6.1 sec
According to Autocar the 335i can also do 0-170 kph in 21 seconds in third gear, try that in your Cayman

Temm, you're right about the in-gear times - just proves that there is a difference between a fast commuter car and a real sportscar. Who wants to accelerate a Porsche from 80-120 km/h in fifth gear - it should be forbidden by law
I'm under the impression that a lot of people are spoiled by the modern turbos and TDIs - they complain about the missing low end torque of Porsches because they drive them just like their daily beaters. You have to rev the Ps in order to have fun (and fun it is ) - if I recall correctly the optimum in torque for a Cayman S starts at 4,300 rpm or so.
I for one prefer the non-linear power delivery when driving a sportscar, for daily commuting at midrange speed a Turbo or TDI is very nice though (different tools for different purposes)

You guys overestimate 335i so much.
Yes it is really nice and good choice at that price but the reality is not the same on magazine papers.
I ve raced with a 335Coupe last week while cruising on autobahn, that car was good but not impressed me as much as the mags and papers said..
And i compared this to my race with an E46 M3. 335 is not faster than E46 M3. It is good with its torque and but only until 160-170kmh speeds.
Maybe it was different days but the place is the same. All i can say is yes 335 is good until 160ish kmh , after 160/170 kmh 335 it is struggling. I can say M3 was much determined than 335 over 180kmh.
BMW is very professional with advertisements and on mags. And they did well about this on 335.
But all i can say 335 is good at low speed and it does its best at mid-range accelerations such as 80-180 but after that dissapointment starts.
That was what i ve seen from two races.
Regarding Cayman vs 335 , if you dont mind performance go get Cayman but if you care performance then 335.
But Cayman S vs 335Coupe , i can say Cayman S without hesitation
