Naw, I'd just say "my 335i Twin Turbo is faster from 0-60 than your Porsche Cayman S." No ifs ands or buts about it.

Yeah, that'll teach that Cayman owner! LOL!

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

I think that if you just sat down next to a cayman owner and said that, he'd most likely give you a look like you were a complete tool, and then say "you just don't get it, do you?"

Thanks, PJ! It's proven now. The 335i is faster than the Cayman S from 0-80 and 0-100. Case closed.

    Erm...lol?
Check the data that really counts: 0-200. As far as I can see the BMW is slower.
Not really interesting to be a nosehair ahead after 200 metres and then get owned the rest of the way. Not to mention the moment the road bends.
    At 200 km/h a 1 second gap equals 55 meters.

But I guess one could always use this info when sitting in a bar and say " So you have a Porsche, but my Beemer is 0.1 second faster from 0-80 km/h!".

What hasn't been discussed is in-gear times, which are the most relevant figures for day-to-day driving IMO, where the Beemer will smoke the Cayman S thanks to its superior torque.

    80-120 kph in fifth gear:
    Cayman S: 6.6 sec
    335i: 6.2 sec
    Carrera S: 6.1 sec

According to Autocar the 335i can also do 0-170 kph in 21 seconds in third gear, try that in your Cayman

If you take just one thing from this road test, let it be this: never make the mistake of underestimating a BMW 335i. So you don't forget, we'll hit you with the numbers early: 5.4sec to 60mph and a scarcely believable 12.8sec to 100mph. To give that some perspective, a current E46 M3 is just a second quicker to three figures. Perhaps even more important in the real world are the in-gear times; this svelte, inconspicuous coupé will rip from 50-70mph in top gear 1.6sec faster than its M-badged brother. This is a sensationally rapid coupé.

So flexible and linear is the delivery that you can pull away from a standstill in third gear and just 21 seconds later be sitting on the rev limiter at 105mph. Fourth will take you from walking pace to 140mph.

Temm, you're right about the in-gear times - just proves that there is a difference between a fast commuter car and a real sportscar. Who wants to accelerate a Porsche from 80-120 km/h in fifth gear - it should be forbidden by law
I'm under the impression that a lot of people are spoiled by the modern turbos and TDIs - they complain about the missing low end torque of Porsches because they drive them just like their daily beaters. You have to rev the Ps in order to have fun (and fun it is ) - if I recall correctly the optimum in torque for a Cayman S starts at 4,300 rpm or so.

I for one prefer the non-linear power delivery when driving a sportscar, for daily commuting at midrange speed a Turbo or TDI is very nice though (different tools for different purposes)

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

You guys overestimate 335i so much.

Yes it is really nice and good choice at that price but the reality is not the same on magazine papers.

I ve raced with a 335Coupe last week while cruising on autobahn, that car was good but not impressed me as much as the mags and papers said..

And i compared this to my race with an E46 M3. 335 is not faster than E46 M3. It is good with its torque and but only until 160-170kmh speeds.

Maybe it was different days but the place is the same. All i can say is yes 335 is good until 160ish kmh , after 160/170 kmh 335 it is struggling. I can say M3 was much determined than 335 over 180kmh.

BMW is very professional with advertisements and on mags. And they did well about this on 335.

But all i can say 335 is good at low speed and it does its best at mid-range accelerations such as 80-180 but after that dissapointment starts.

That was what i ve seen from two races.

Regarding Cayman vs 335 , if you dont mind performance go get Cayman but if you care performance then 335.

But Cayman S vs 335Coupe , i can say Cayman S without hesitation

You're right Achim, you should never do 80-120 in fifth gear in a Porsche

And I love the way the power delivery in the Boxster (2.5) has a few peaks on the way to the redline (with accompanying sounds effects), there's one around 2300 rpm and from 5000 rpm to the redline

So the best thing is to have one sportscar and one daily driver. But, if I could have just one car, I would take the 335i (I have two kids so the answer gives itself)

That may be true for someone who is used to a very loud Gallardo and a M5. But for someone like me, who thinks the Boxster 2.5 is pretty fast, the 335i is very quick indeed.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

    Temm ;

i was referring about m3 vs 335 difference. I didnt mention any comparison about m5 or gallardo.

    I compared m3 vs 335.

Did you remember 6 months ago? Lots of news , comments about 335.

It is faster than M3 ,"m3 is dead", "every e46 m3 owner must sell e46 and buy 335", "It will beat Carrera , Porsche will have a tough time in 2007 bla bla."

These things are always same when BMW produces a new fast car like M series or 335.

I figured out BMW and BMW fans(even the employess in BMW deparments here) attitude.

And your logic is very true , but what i say is Cayman S would be as quick as 335.

As you said you have 2 kids and choice for dd car of course 335 would be the best for you. I have no kids so i would get Cayman S. That is all about lifestyle

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Anyway... wasn't this topic about regular Cayman vs 335i coupe ?

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

yes it was about regular cayman. I went ahead and bought it and am very happy it is much fun to drive! I have had SUV's my whole life so this is my first sports car. I plan on keeping it for a year or 2 and then trading it in for something faster.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Nice!!!! Congratualtions man, you won't regret it!!! Do yo have pictures? I'd love to see it!

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Yeah pics! Congrats. Don't you feel SO low down after the SUVs?

I know, the point I was trying to make was that to someone like you, who is used to driving very fast cars, the 335i (or indeed the M3) may not feel as fast as to someone who isn't used to driving a Gallardo or M5. For someone used to a 118d, the 335i will be very fast indeed, it's all about perspective.

But it's no point discussing anymore now that tphillips has bought a Cayman - congratulations and enjoy

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Yes I do feel way down low after driving SUV's. Love this car but I am noticing a little squeal on the brakes when I come to a stop or braking through a corner. I am taking it in this week for aftermarket tint and I am going to ask them about it then but I am a little curious since the car is an 08 and only has about 200 miles on it.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

The brake squeal will go away. The pads are still bedding in. You can help this by repeatedly doing some hard braking from 60mph or so. The tyres will also be bedding in (though 200 miles may be enough). Also there are guidances in the manual regarding bedding in the engine and gearbox which some ignore and some adhere to rigidly. You should stick to the lower 2/3 of the rev range for the first 1000miles or thereabouts. Or anyhow, don't rev the nuts off it until it is well warmed up, which you shouldn't ever do anyway.
Enjoy the car, and explore it with care. And have lots of fun!

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

    Congrats with the car !!!

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Here are pics from the dealership. I don't have any good ones right now but I had the Porsche dealer put some tint on the windows which I am not sure if I like or not. I kind of liked it before but too late for now. Porsche aftermarket stuff is $$$$.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

    That looks great! Congratulations!
