    Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

I am getting ready to make a new car purchase. I have it between the new 335i coupe BMW or a regular Cayman w/Tiptronic 19inch wheels. Just wanted to see if anybody could give me an opinion on which I should get. I am nota speed demon just looking with something with power adn good handling. FYI young and single and looking for something to impress the ladies. I know that is shallow but hey why not?

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

The Cayman will impress the ladies more as long as you don't do any stop light racing, against a 335i, with them in the car.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Welcome to Rennteam A Porsche will always be more exclusive than a BMW, and will handle better. The 335i will be much quicker (in a straight line) than the Cayman, with the double disadvantage of the tiptronic (which totally ruins the car by the way - are you sure you want that option) and the 2.7 engine. The Cayman is definitely the more "cool" car.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

As others said, a porsche will always impress more than a BMW.

With the cayman, you should order the S. If you can't afford one, get a boxster S. It's a bit cheaper than the cay S.

If you want the cayman 2.7l, at least get one with PASM because with 19 inch wheels and std suspension, you're on for a rough ride. Except if you like it like that.

A cayman with 18 inch is already less comfortable than a 997 with PASM.

I've never driven a 335i. My advice: drive both to know what you want.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

    Get a Boxster S.
Unless youre going to seriously trackrace it or really like the Cayman shape/look, there is no reason at all to pick a Cayman over a Boxster.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

I would say that most girls like a soft top better too.
    Beetle cabrio, Mini cabrio....

So get a better specced Boxster S.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Yeah chicks dig softop... Boxster S

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

    Boxster S...Chick Magnet!!!

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Ladies like a Mini cooper more

Boxster S all the way, was one of my favourite cars that I owned.

    335 is amazing too though.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

A fully loaded BMW 335i with amenities such as leather, Navigation, heated seats, and Comfort Access tells her you're an up and coming Junior Executive that's serious about your career and would be a good provider. A Porsche says you're a balding middle-aged sucker that doesn't know an overpriced underpowered impractical ripoff when you see one. Which one do you think would land you the woman of your dreams?

Comfort access? Sorry, which one screams middle-aged?

When most girls see a BMW, ANY BMW, they see a car

When they see you have a Porsche, they will be telling all their girly friends "He drives a Porsche!"

Kid yourself all you like. There isn't a cheap Porsche. But... BMWs...

    Nick..? Is that you?....Nick Berry?.....

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

You've never had a girlfriend before, have you? Comfort Access is great for not having to fish around in a purse for keys, especially while in a dark deserted part of the parking lot late at night. It's the one feature women find most appealing, more than horsepower or handling, which are guy things.

I'm not even going to bring up the old cliche about guys who feel the need for a Porsche and little dicks.

LOL. I don't think I'm the one that has insecurity problems buddy.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

    Practical: 335
    Ladies: Cayman/Boxster
    Straight line/highway: 335
    Mountain road: Cayman/boxster
    Tiptronic: never :-)

So you want the girl to know that you're a good provider, huh? Doesn't really put you in a position to call Cayman drivers suckers.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

I dont understand this. How can the 335i be faster than the Boxster/Cayman?
The BMW has 305 BHP versus the Boxters normally underestimated 295 BHP, and the Beemer weighs 1600 kg versus appr 1350 for the Boxster/Cayman.

The Beemer cant possibly be faster than the P.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Lasse, the 335i in reality has closer to 340-350 bhp. Even the Audi S5 can hardly beat it in a straight line.

Yeah, I thought so. Then I went for a testdrive to figure out by myself. The 335i is REALLY fast. Don't forget it has a lot more torque...and it still revs like an atmo. Amazing engine. Kudos to BMW

Even with 350 BHP it has a poorer power-to-weight ratio than the P?
Most 295 BHP Boxsters/Caymans (Caymen pluralis?) really deliver 305/310 BHP.
    It's still sounds strange....

It would seem that it is just as fast if not even a bit faster up to 200 km/h. It won't surprise me if it walks the Cayman above 200 km/h (power is king).

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Anyone have a serious test of these two cars - not necessasrily together - so we can compare 0-100, 0-160, quatermile etc?

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Want to know why the Cayman S is slower than a BMW 335i?

    1. Porsche AG went out of its way to deliberately develop and put a smaller 3.4L engine in the Cayman S instead of part-sharing the existing 3.6 or 3.8L Carrera engines. BMW did no such thing. As it is, the BMW 335i twin-turbo has more torque, has it from a lower rpm, as low as 1500rpm, and has it up to a higher rpm.

    2. Porsche AG screwed with the gearing on the Cayman S to slow it down. So the Cayman S engine produces less torque than the Carrera engine AND has taller gears, a double whammy. BMW gave the 335i optimal gearing for the power provided by the engine.

There you have it. Less torque and hobbled gearing, that's why the Cayman S is so slow.

I've read before that people are of the opinion that the 335i is faster (straightline) than the Cayman S. IMO it's nothing else than subjective perception (turbo vs. n/a engine). My (very subjective) view: a sportscar needs a n/a engine. I'm not a fan of turbos in a sportscar - they remind me of Diesel engines
But then, the 335i isn't a sportscar at all - as an Autobahn tool the engine concept makes a lot of sense though (just for the record: I like the driving dynamics of the 3 series a lot )

As for the real numbers here you go (numbers from the respective Sportauto Supertest)

    (BMW 335i Coupé/Cayman S)
    0-80 (4.2/4.3)
    0-100 (5.6/5.7)
    0-120 (8.0/7.8)
    0-140 (10.2/9.9)
    0-160 (13.0/12.3)
    0-180 (16.9/15.8)
    0-200 (20.7/19.8)

    Thanks PJ!
    That's what I thought.
The Cayman may not be "blessed" with the larger engines of the P program, but common sense and a calculator makes it pretty evident that a 250+ kg heavier car with a poorer power-to-weight ratio cannot be faster.
Altho I must admit it is a lot closer to the Cayman than I would have thought...

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

BMW 335i: 1600 kg, 400 Nm, 306 BHP (official), 4 kg pr Nm, 5,22 Kg pr BHP
Cayman: 1390 kg, 340 Nm, 295 BHP (official), 4,08 Kg pr Nm, 4,7 Kg pr BHP

People claim the Beemer has more BHP than the official numbers. The same applies to the Cayman. How much the true numbers deviate from the official ones, I dunno.
Perhaps someone has info on the average real-life BHP of both cars?

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Thanks, PJ! It's proven now. The 335i is faster than the Cayman S from 0-80 and 0-100. Case closed.

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

In my opinion the Cayman S is much more fun to drive, if only in the sense that it's a different feeling. The front end feels light, and "chuckable" if you know what i mean The 335i, their's no doubt it's an amazing car, but in the end it's a fast 3 series, not a mid engined sports car. It's a (really) nice luxury sedan/coupe!

Not to mention, 0-60 and 0-100 times really dont mean a whole lot to me, I'd say it depends on how much fun it is getting there! And the Cayman S, I can say from experience, is VERY fun!

    Erm...lol?
Check the data that really counts: 0-200. As far as I can see the BMW is slower.
Not really interesting to be a nosehair ahead after 200 metres and then get owned the rest of the way. Not to mention the moment the road bends.
    At 200 km/h a 1 second gap equals 55 meters.

But I guess one could always use this info when sitting in a bar and say " So you have a Porsche, but my Beemer is 0.1 second faster from 0-80 km/h!".

Re: Regular Cayman vs 335i coupe

Naw, I'd just say "my 335i Twin Turbo is faster from 0-60 than your Porsche Cayman S." No ifs ands or buts about it.
