    Average annual upkeep $$$

Hey Porsche family... I'm likely buying my first Porsche within a couple of days (a used '01 996 with 20k miles @ $30k) and I feel privileged to be joining a group that has already helped to thoroughly inform me (awesome RMS thread!).

Looks to me that the 996 I'm looking at couldn't be in much better shape than it is (spectac interior, new warranty-replaced engine with 20k on it, clean title, etc.) , but I would like some input on (1) how much I should expect to pay every year to keep in in great shape...and (2) if you're feeling a little talkative, what kinds of things should be part of my 996's yearly life cycle? And how much should a great warranty cost (and for that matter, what makes a great warranty)? I appreciate the expertise in advance!

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

Hey, thanks for all the input on this thread, everybody. Following your ironclad advise, I bought the 996 today. Right about now someone should post something telling me I should expect to shell out about $5-6k a year in general maintenance.

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

It depends on how much you drive. Find a good mechanic in your area and change the oil a couple of times per year. Unless you have something break a 996 with 30K will not cost much at all - $200 - $400 per year if you drive a lot(if you stay away from the dealer).
Your biggest expense will be tires. Plan on spending about twice as much on tires as you do gas as the rears wear out quickly (twice a fast as the front). Go with Kumho and you can cut that by 70% over the Michelins.
Enjoy, I had a 996 for 5+ years and 100K. Solid as a rock - no required repairs. DRIVE IT A LOT, IT WILL GET MUCH QUICKER.

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

I really appreciate your response, Leawood! That's good advice. As far as staying away from the dealer for my maintenance, won't that negatively affect my resale value, or will those records suffice as "complete records?"

    Are Kumho's solid quality? Thanks!

Congrats on your purchase! If the car is in good shape - $30k for a 01 was a bargain.

I agree with the other posters. Largest expense tires. Maintenance - oil change - brake bleeding - you can do it yourself or a few 100/year.

Um, one thing that concerns me a little (only a little because I think and hope it's impossible) is the "Plan on spending about twice as much on tires as you do gas..." comment. Well, I spend about $2,500 on gas annually, so I should plan on spending $5k on tires? I don't have that kind of money for tires.

On a separate note, I've had the car for 10 days and am in the shock of new love with it. It's an incredible car and was a steal. It's in immaculate condition for the most part with SUPER low miles. Drives like a dream I've barely realized I'm even in. Awesome! Thanks for the help!

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

Not much more than $1000-2000 a year to get it maintained at a very good dealer.

Simple math (although gas is now more expensive than in the past). Let's say you get 20K miles out of that $2500 in gas. If you buy and mount Michelins figure on the rears lasting about 6-7K miles and maybe the fronts will last twice that (to be really cheap). So that is 6 rears @ $500 each installed (285/30/18) and 4 front tires @ 400 each installed. Close to $4600 in tires. I don't know about you but that is pretty close. Those Michelin Pilot Sports wear out so fast on the rear of a 996, after 5K miles they are very loud and start to drive very poorly on the highway.

What are you going to be paying them $1000-$2000 per year to do? The routine maintenance is dirt cheap for anyone other than a dealer to perform and I don't even see how the nastiest dealer could extort more than a $1000 per year for routine maintenance. You would need to drive it a lot (20K+) to need to take it to them more than twice per year.

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

Tires ARE an important budget line. Rear Pilots or PZeros will dissapear quickly, it is a fact...

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

c2 is a great car...the biggest thing that I did to mine was buy the power kit for the engine...you cannot believe the difference . the biggest 20 horses you will ever find...the quality of the parts is pretty astounding compared to stock...X99 is the part number

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

Leawood911, I have to ask...Are you really spending $5k a year on tires? I have a colleague who races Porsches (I don't) and drives his car much harder than I think I ever would or could and he started laughing when I told him someone warned me to be ready to spend $5k on tires every year. He uses Kuhmos and has never spent more than $1k in a year on tires. I must be missing something here 'cause I can tell that you really seem to know your stuff. Thank you.

Read the posts please. In my original post on this topic I suggest using Kumho tires to cut costs (by more than half). In fact they have an excellent 295/30/18. (no right size for my 19"997S wheels. )
Someone else read that I stated it is easy to spend twice as much for tires as gas when using the Michelins and gave the example of using $2500 in gas. Based on the miles one can get from that much fuel I showed how it is possible to spend that much on Michelin tires.
Personally I switched away from Michelins because their prime grip and ride lasts for such a short time and that makes them expensive (frequent replacement unless you don't mind driving on worn down tires.)
I guess the part you were missing was reading the entire thread. It's all good.

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

About $1k/year. That's what it cost me for my 2000 996 C4, which has been trouble-free and I'm selling now.

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

I don't know how one can spend so much in tires in a year - I mean the $5k a year some are stating. I had a 2004 C4S and the rear tires lasted almost exactly 15K miles, even after tracking the car one weekend. The front ones had almost exactly double the tread left in them so I figure they would last until past 25k miles. I sold the car at around 20k miles and only had 1 service done at about $400 at the dealer. So, to drive the car the 20k miles I owned it cost me about $1600, no more than that!

I now own a 2006 997 Carrera S with Powerkit and I'm its first owner (as in the 2004 C4S). The car has 12,600 miles now and I bought it in March 2006. I still have tread on the rear tires but may not give me more than a couple more thousand miles. The front ones have plenty of tread left. My service is not scheduled until 20k miles or next March 2008. So far, my cost has been $0.00!!! This is definitely the least expensive car to maintain I've ever owned, and I am not exaggerating! I expect to pay $450 more or less for the service and some rear tires soon. So, estimating expenses at $1500 to $1700 in two years, how much more can we expect from such a high performance car?

    Just my HO.
    Regards!

Sounds like a steal, well to me thats a great deal! Porsche always hold there value especially in the Porsche community.

    Re: Average annual upkeep $$$

    I just had my 80'000km service. I paid 1500CHF (about $1250).
