A lot of the people that are in the market for a new 987 would have already bought one. If they are trading to another new one, 50% are going to be looking at a new Cayman. If they're looking for a 2nd new Boxster, they may well wait for the next swathe of changes. People that bought original 987s back in 04/05 may be getting rid due to the current environmental/economic pressure and/or because they've had their Porsche fun and are now quitting.
So... We'll see. Not suprised the used prices are depressed (depressingly). Does this mean you can get discounts off new in the UK now then? I doubt it!

What's environmentally worse about the 05 boxster compared to the 07 and 08? Sorry if this is an ignorant question. I haven't kept up.

I'm looking at an 05 Boxster S with 11k miles, asking $42k. It has PASM, sport chrono, zenon, Bose, etc.

What do you think would be a good out the door price?

    Thanks.

As in "North of Barney's" and encompasses Rush St. Oak St. and Division.

You get the typical 430/360 guy standing on the gas pedal doing wah-wah guitar impersonations while some 50-year old silicon valleyd hooker gives him the wiggle-waggle outside of Tavern on Rush. Street theater at it's best, sponsored by Ferrari.

Well although the new models will be a bit more economical when they get direct injection, they are still fairly high CO2 emitting cars (in the governments eyes). We are seeing large annual tax increases for cars with high emissions, plus higher congestion charge for London, and on top of that the increased fuel costs, and the big killer - peer pressure. It's not good to be seen driving a car that is perceived to be killing the planet!

Its not a case of 07/08 vs 05 - it's a shift in perspective on the whole sector.

I personally hate the fact that people don't easily consider the environmental production cost into the total lifetime energy footprint of the car. Technically, Porsches should come out as being quite environmentally friendly as most of them are still running decades after being built. Compare that to a cheap but fuel efficient Ford.

And we all know that Ferraris contribute directly to global warming by bursting into flame spontaneously, or at the very least have a very short lifespan before they are totalled, or not economically serviceable

That's pretty much spot on. What's worse, there's one jerk that drives around without his shirt on (as though he's trolling South Beach) in an older 360. As Le Chef says, street theater.

    Perfectly put.

    Re: Boxster sales drop sharply

If you have ever been to a track day and mixed it up with the 911, the 911 gets you in the sraights and in the twists you see them in the mirrow. Most opions, "girls car mans car" are made by people who have never diven either car,

Are you referring to the red 360 cabrio with the huge spoiler? I love the tanned, permed driver with the tank top and gold chain. I need to get his picture--maybe he's the long lost cousin of one of our forum friends.

    Re: It's called "No-Ba"

Yup, the description of the area is just about right. Well not all is wrong about the place. At least there is a Bentley/Lambo dealer nearby. Gotta admit that I love the black Gallardo in the window!

    Re: It's called "No-Ba"

Boxster sales are down and Cayman sales are up. (Seem to recall the opinions at the time on Rennteam where it wouldn't sell, remember that old chestnut)

After owning 911, Cayman and Boxster it doesn't surprise me one bit.

You buy the Boxster because you want an entry level Porsche for the badge if you're that shallow or because it's the best convertible in its class. Clowns who call it the poor mans Porsche use that line to try undermine the car and you because there jealous, it usually comes from some body whose never driven a Porsche of any description and owns crap car I wouldn't even think of buying.

The Cayman's bought by enthusiast who want a drivers car that makes the 911 seem a bit over priced and flat footed by comparison.

Many 911 buyers want a 911 because they see it as an icon (which it is), not because of the unique and involving drive it offers, which is very sad.

Reading comments on here many seem more concerned what other people think about the car they own and what it says about their status and them, rather than the car itself.

    2009 Boxster/Cayman pricing

Considering the weak dollar and the planned HP boost from FDI I would not be surprised to see pricing go up substantailly for 2009. If I had to guess Boxster MSRP will be $48,100 and Boxster S $58,400. Wild a** guesses on my part. But this could be a good strategy for clearing leftover '08s from inventory.

    Re: Boxster sales drop sharply

lol mr nberry turns out to be a softie after all ;-)

i have a 987 boxster and i love it too. I had tested the audi TT, the bmw Z4, the honda S2000, and all was clear: best value for money and better resale value , ad incredible drive (at least over here) is the boxster !

even the technician last time I was at the dealership told me that he loved the boxster too and said: it sticks to the road like glue, even in heavy turns.

That's what i love about it, it is so sharp and steareable.

the only thing i really regret is not getting the S version...

    Re: Boxster sales drop sharply

I love my 997S but when the lease comes up next year, I must admit that I am considering getting a used 987S. There are some other things I'd like to do with the money now, plus the 987 really is a terrific car. It is true that the 911 is harder to drive well, and that challenge has its allure, but its also great to have the feeling that driving 987 gives - like you can carve a more precise line with more poise. It's easier to be smooth in a 987, and the zen bliss of a smooth balanced lap is other-worldly.

I think it might be nice to drive a drop top too - never had a cab before.

Finally, I think it would be fun to mod the 987 and make it a real track toy. Prices for used 987's are attractive for track cars - more so than 997's.

Despite the terrific press they get, 987s are still sleepers. Most people are still taken by the iconic 997, which is a really great sportscar to be sure. It's just that the 987 kind of lives in the 997's shadow. I don't really care if others don't appreciate that.

    Or maybe I'll get a 996 GT3!?

    Re: Boxster sales drop sharply

Boxster sales drop sharply but the Cayman, while certainly being part of the reason, actually is the same platform. Perhaps the two should be looked at together? Just pretend that the Cayman is a Boxster with a solid roof. If the Cayman had not been added to the line up, then Boxster sales probably would have declined a little anyway.

Comparisons to the 911 series get very tricky. The 911 has a rearword weight bias that gives traction and braking great power (basic physics). It also yields handling that while greatly tamed in newer models is none the less only fully taken advantage of by a gifted few and leaves many who attempt it feeling regretful. I have driven many 911's. I enjoy them immensely, but I do not believe myself to be the gifted driver who can push the car to it's potential.
The Boxster/Cayman with it's balanced weight distribution can achieve the greatest minimum speed in a corner (basic physics again). The greatest minimum speed in a corner is no small thing to have as your advantage. Of course with such a balanced weight distribution the transition from oversteer to understeer can be surprising too.

    Be careful out there

    Re: It's called "No-Ba"

I bought the 911 because I have more interior space, more exclusive, sounds better with PSE, rear engine layout (feels good during corner, not as quick as the mid layout, but I like it), more modifications I can do, looks better in my opinion, better re-sale value...all of them.....so I sold my 987S....

Why would anyone buy a Boxster because of the badge? If you're that status conscious and you want a Porsche, the obvious choice is a used 911. A used 993 or 996 has more status than new 987S. I see no problem calling the Boxster the "poor man's Porsche." It just means it's the cheapest Porsche. It doesn't mean you're poor or couldn't afford a 911. I've called my Boxster the "poor man's Porsche." No problem. I would buy a base or S 911 for the 2+2 seating. I would buy a GT3 or GT2 if I needed a more track focused raw sports car.

    Re: Boxster sales drop sharply

For me... BOXSTER S will always be the ride... weather they think its girly or slutty or whatever... Its the best convertable out there in the market and its now any slower than cayman.. in fact 100% same engine EXCEPT for the extra 10hp in the 2009 model....

I will get my boxster S in June 1st, 2009 and for me, i think if sports car wasnt for racing then gotta be convertable for a truly nice different ride.... and i aint gonna live on tracks! so BOXSTER S will always be the babe for me:P
