    Terrible track day Nürburgring

This video shot from the Nürburgring shows just how fast things can go from bad, to worse, and lead straight to unfreaking believable.

    Re: Terrible track day Nürburgring

How does the NR not having warning lights and cameras all over the place that can be activated? A minute or investment could make these things far less common.

Hell, they could even get an app and make people use a dash mount with the phone that can display a red flashing screen any time there is an accident.

There are many warning lights, but the track is 13 miles long and most sections have very limited visibility.  If drivers had a phone that blinked whenever there was an accident somewhere on the track, the thing would be blinking constantly.  It would have to blink just for those cars approaching the section with the accident.

I had a lucky escape from something very similar earlier this year: dropped coolant resulting in 5 cars going off. Thankfully my PSM kept things together and I missed the other car. Also no yellow flags or lights. It ought to be possible to automatically trigger yellows quickly in a section if a car stops using a transponder. Something like that would help massively if they had lots of lights. Too many of these kinds of accidents there surprise

Me too - 3 weeks ago.  Right in the thick of multiple-car wreck from spilled coolant at Aremberg.  Scared the crap out of me.  One of the nice things about the old 911's (including Singer) - no coolant...

That happens during track days too.  When I did Scuderia S7, a Ferrari F12 was a total loss after an older BMW dropped oil...

I find this a really good idea, I guess F1 cars already have a system like this, right?

    Re: Terrible track day Nürburgring

Yes, but it's less frequent. On tourist days, there are A LOT of cars of all age and some aren't properly maintained. Just to give an example: One time in the early morning a car was driving up to the barrier, with stuttering engine and only half of the driving lights were functioning (front and rear). The exhaust was popping and you could hear the misfires of the motor. There were 2 stewards witnessing this and one tells the other "I wouldn't be surprised if this guy wasn't making it to the next corner". Both then laughed and I thought to myself, why on earth aren't they pulling him out for a check?!

Another example: Also early in the morning, a car (I don't remember the make, something older) was trailing a huge cloud behind him. He was clearly losing oil or something. I was careful when I overtook him and I made wild hand gestures, which he ignored lol. I was sure that the stewards would pull him out, so I kept going for another lap. Then, another lap or two, I had him in front of me again...still losing oil. This time I stopped after my lap and reported him.

Come to think of it, I have plenty of stories like this from my past years. I'm sure other regulars have too. Tourist drives are a pure hazard.

Such a system was also being discussed when they sold the Nürburgring. Not sure if it was canned because another buyer got the deal.

My episode was on a private day, too.  TF is way too risky for me these days.
