    I thought Starbucks' prices were bad enough, but when you also have to allow yourself to be sh*fted by a Ferrari dealer by paying well over MSRP to buy a set of wheels before you can cruise down to the coffee shop, then it gets to be rediculous.

    I am not sure what prices are in Europe but I paid MSRP. I was fortunate at that because Ferrari raised prices on the 360 on all cars invoiced after Feb. 16th. Mine was invoiced I believe on the 14th. It would have costed another $13,000.

    BTW look at the cover of Christophrus June/July issue and then look on P.42. If I put both cars side by side many would have difficulty determining which was the 997 or 993.

    but IMO this "classic" front is a mistake. PAG is thinking short-term, once again. and the media is joining happily and speaking about the "unloved" 996 with it's "fried egg boxster headlights" (haven't they heard of the turbo facelift btw?). the 996 took the 911 idea to the next century, created a supercar on it's own. and now the 997 is stepping back. why? just to please early critics who become silent long ago...

    and if all people are talking about the "classic" coke bottle shape... this extreme wide rear fender look was introduced with the 993 -- early 911's are slim.

    my prediction: PAG will soon realise that going "retro" was a mistake, the 997 turbo will get a distinctive look without the round headlights and the michael-mauer-designed 998 won't look at all like the 997 (or 993).

    but maybe i'm wrong and i'm willing to correct myself when i see the 997 in the metal...

    Trust me, you're wrong.
    The 996 front facelift, introduced with the 996 Turbo, was just a somehow "helpless" way to seperate the 911 look from the Boxster look. There was no other possibility of a cost effective solution without having to redesign the whole front.

    I agree however that the 998 will be a real challenge for the Porsche designers. I can see some "design games" with the interior of retro frontlights including a smaller size maybe.
    I can can also see some design changes of the rear lights with LED lamps and maybe a different shape.

    I think Porsche did it right with the 997. Other car manufacturers are desperately seeking for a new "design/shape language" for their traditional models, others are trying to follow a less risky path.
    Look at Mercedes with heir E-class, a huge success and the new E-class really is a nice looking car.
    Look at BMW with their 7-series, it looks impressive, it looks expensive, it looks executive style but it is no beauty.

    Porsche is no Ferrari and no Jaguar. People are expecting something different from Porsche and I don't understand why? Is the 911 shape really that outdated or is it more like a good old friend you feel attached to, a good old friend which gets his face lifted to look younger. But it is still the same person, the same friend with all his pros and cons and the things we love on him. Or just imagine it is your wife with a new face and a new rack. The same old woman we always loved and admired for her strength with a new body, making her look again sexy to attract us once more.
    Stupid examples? Maybe. But whenever I see a 911 on the street, I feel good and I look at it, no matter how old the car is. I feel attached to it. Of course I love Ferraris and Lambos too and I look at them but it is more of the sort of look you have when you see a beautiful woman and you like how she looks but then you realize that she's not the right person for you, your lifestyle and your pocket.

    of course you are right about PAG's intention, but it wasn't helpless. IMO the 996 facelift/turbo headlights are very beautiful.

    good point!

    a 911 is never an outdated or unattractive car. even when i see e. g. a ferrari 348 i think "hmm, this one's old -- i don't really like it any more". but 911's are above all -- G models, 964, 993 -- i like 'em all.

    but only time will tell if this also works out for 996 and 997 models.
