If you plug in your serial # I think it will list what has changed/what you'd be upgraded to from your version.

I've done the upgrade a couple of times with a couple of V1s and was glad to get the Jpop upgrade along with whatever else was improved. It is especially nice to get the old thicker unit replaced with a nice shiny new thinner one

I'd consider it for the POP function.
Otherwise mine has NOT gone off ONCE, from a cop, in maybe 10K miles! Freekin' cops around here don't seem to be using radar anymore.
So, if your old one isn't flashing and beeping from ambush attempts on other cars, chances are the new one won't either. IOW, I'd immediately get the upgrade my current model was proving indispensible in saving my a**.

I believe it depends upon the generation of the unit going in for an upgrade. I sent my V1 in for an upgrade in January (or around then). The unit was about 5 years old then. The unit returned to me has a new serial number but it is most definitely the same shell that I sent in. It is quite possible that all of the innerds were swapped but the unit itself came back with the same scratches I sent it in with.

I sent my 10 year old V-1 in a few years back and got a new thiner cased unit with the POP and J features. The thing has paid for itself 20 times over, and I wouldn't be without it.
The tax collectors here in the Western states still use radar, mostly Ka band. "Instant on" remains the bugaboo for detectors. You need a "rabbit" out in front of you to light up the radars ahead in those cases.
For a "belt and suspenders" strategy, I also use the Escort SRX with its' laser diffuser feature.

Hey OTH!
Does the SRX "really work?" Is it's effectiveness 99%-ish? Seems like if it's jamming circuitry is triggered (and why wouldn't it be if it detects laser?) _it's_ laser counter-emission goes off it and _will_ work.
Passive microwave _detection_ is a whole 'nother story... .
What happens exactly when the cops get their LIDAR jammed? They just let you go?
YIKES! _THAT'S_ gotta be a tense moment when you just actively _jammed_ the cops' efforts to nail you.

I also own a SRX detector with laser difusers and I am relatively certain that if you hit the mute button after a laser encounter that it deactivates the laser diffusers but the detector will continue to provide alerts. So when the unit alerts that you are being detected by laser it gives you chance to slow down and hit the mute button--then if they are still aimed at your car it will detect your reduced speed. Other diffusors (such as the Lidatek) units will alert and diffuse initially for approx. 5 seconds giving you a chance to slow down then the diffusers shut off also allowing your reduced speed to be detected. I think that while the diffusers are active, the gun will either show dashes or zeros which I don't think is that unusual for these laser units so I don't think the police would have any reason to pursue you. And even it they do, these devices are not illegal in most states. I have not been through a laser speed trap since I had this unit installed so I can't personally comment on how well it actually works.

Wow, I never heard of that, not only did I get brand new units after upgrading (one was a few years old, the other a bit newer I think) but I've always heard other people report the same thing. Sorry, didn't mean to provide misinformation.

No biggie.
It's whatever is "cheapest." Change out whatever components can be changed, replace the whole unit if necessary.
I heard (?) some "used" but current (not obsolete) components are better than a new equivalent unit because the chances they will burn out are significantly lower than those of a new one.
By "used" I think they mean light or moderate not heavily or extreme use.

I don't think hitting the "mute" button does anything but mute the alert noise, because after hitting the button I have received new hits. I have a hidden "kill" button under the dash that turns the whole thing off, which may be what you're thinking of.
These things definitely do work. I observed a test against a rented laser gun. The test subjects were Atomic80's SRX and a Z4 coupe with the Lidatek. The Lidatek may have detected signals slightly sooner, but both gave enough warning time to reduce speed. The sensor/diffuser in the back on the SRX is less effective as it allowed a "gotcha" when the gun was aimed at the tail light rather than the license plate. The Lidatek didn't have a rear sensor/diffuser. Both units have two sensors/diffusers in front, which when placed far enough apart will pretty much cover your a##
BTW the V-1 picks up the laser signals quite nicely, but doesn't do anything about them, so you're dog meat when the alarm goes off. (License and registration please.)

It's actually the Remote Mute button--according to the manual (pg. 5) "the Remote Mute button can be used to manually stop 'shifting' once you have corrected your speed. Simply press the Remote Mute Button twice during the 'Laser Shifting' message, and the Shifter's will cease to transmit. The Shifter's will automatically reset within one minute. A reset message will be displayed to verify and acknowledge the reset."
This feature is probably there to help prevent harassment from law enforcement because other shifters, such as the Lidatek, have similar features (automatically disabling the shifters after 5 sec.).
