    In-dash navigation, OE and aftermarket --opinions?

    So I've hesitated on buying a Boxster S off the lot (and thus want to order one) because I can't find one with navigation and the other options I like. Adding OE nav costs $5k US, from what I've been told. That said, How good is the OE system? Does anybody have an aftermarket in-dash navigation system that looks good and functions well? Pics would be more than welcome!!

    Save your money.

    I added Navigation to my 06 Carrera S after the fact. It looks good and makes me feel better about the car and its "features" (ridiculous that cars at these prices don't have it standard), but honestly I rarely use it since I don't like to park my car in areas I'm not familiar with.

    Asides from its low utility, its also frustrating to use: Not user friendly, No touch screen, not intuitive, business listings are not easy to find (I end up using google mobile for the address and then I input the address into the nav, as opposed to just typing the business name directly into the nav system like its supposed to be).

    Buy a tomtom or garmin, save some money and use it for other upgrades. When you need to use the nav, pull it out of the glove box.

    I have an 05 987s that was without Nav... as i looked at the options it came down to 2 facts: the OEM is aesthetically better, aftermarket MUCH more utility. I went with the Pioneer AVIC D3. Very good sound, Very good Nav, Very good IPOD integration, Very good Bluetooth Phone. I used Goodman Radio in Bryn Mawr PA for the install. They do great high-end work. They manufactured a surround and painted it to match the console's silver. Very happy. Total cost @ 3k

    Why not consider an aftermarket unit like a garmin? they are much better than any OEM solution and portable from car to car.

    Selling the car on with a non standard audio system may put some buyesrs off , also the garmin / tom tom unit do not have hands free telephone or in dash displays which i find very useful functions of the PCM. Car crime of navi units is also on the rise to the portable units can be a liability also. Personally I think the stand alsone units are very good and have some good features coupled to a relatively cheap price for map updates. If you don't travel long distances , then a stand alone system is probably your best best. In my case I like to tour europe and would not consider the tom tom or garmin over the porsche OEM , especially with a leather faced dashboard.

    I know the PCM has received criticism here, but I reckon overall it is very good. Yes the screen could be larger and more importantly full postcode entry would be a major improvement but it is very accurate although in the South of France this year it threw a major wobbler on one or two occasions in towns. Also as it is a DVD based device you can't update it without buying the latest very expensive map DVD.

    Unlike some systems, such as the Alpine based OEM unit in my Honda Civic the TMS functions whether or not the route guidance is being used, showing as arrows on the affected roads. You have to select "dynamic" route guidance option for TMS to work actively, however, it doesn't work in other route modes such as "fast" or "avoid motorway". The zoom in on road junctions is also a very useful feature not included in the many other systems.

    According to the used car buyer at my OPC you get most of your money back come resale.

    Dreamcar..I agree but as to the price of the DVd, compared to buying a set of european maps for a Cd based or card based system , it is actually quite good value. teleatlas will charge 120 pounds per country per disk for other systems ,so complete european coverage for 400 starts to make good sense.

    Garmin 660~ etc have bluetooth, hands free

    Just find out there is navigation from Porsche Design, go to there web and check it out, it look good to me.

    I agree totally. OEM navigation is now an "expected" extra on a Porsche. I've toured Europe a bit already with my car (Factory collection October 06, Marne Valley, France April 07, South of France June 07 and Brittany in two weeks time). TMS particularly useful, as is the auto-zoom on approach to road junctions.

    Yes and no! We used to own a BMW 3 series that had an early OEM CD navigation, and the additional CD's for each country were around Pounds100 each, so yes Pounds400 for full European coverage represents good value.

    BUT Pounds400 will buy a TomTom 710 with full European coverage and Pounds100 change!! And the ability to download updates at a fraction of the cost.

    It is only available in europe and the original poster was from the USA.

    Also the technology is old and inferior, a half assed effort by PD to use their brand to sell something

    Sounds like Porsche Design are doing a Bang & Olufsen - outmoded kit in an expensive pretty box.
