As far as I know, Continental is the only manufacturer which makes tyres in 997TT dimensions, which are rated for 360 km/h.

That is correct. However, we were told that Michelin is in the process of releasing a competing 360kph tire which could also be used on the RT12.

Basically, you have two options if you don't like Conti tires on the RT12:

    - Wait for the Michelin product mentioned above...
    - .. or: order the RT12 with a shorter gearing (max speed ca. 330kph). This would enlarge the scope of available tire options and would also reduce the 0-300kph time by about 2s (ca. 23s instead of 25s)

The shorter gearing sounds attractive. After all, how often do you go over 330 anyway? Or, you could have them build a 7-speed gearbox .

The car in the video is no Rt12. Just look at the front and rear wing... Looks more like an old Rturbo or so.

P.S.: The Rt12 is at least 6-8 seconds faster up to 300kph than the CGT. Up to 200kph both cars have identical acceleration times (slightly below 10s). Above 200kph the Rt12 is significnatly faster. You might also check m5board.com where videos of races of CGT and SLR vs. Rt12 will be shown shortly. The RT12 *significantly* outperformes CGT and SLR in these videos confirming the available magazine tests on the basis of a customer car.

Re: We just drove the RUF rt12 today...

The CGT is TB993TT's from here and the RT12 is LeonS's from here. The video was filmed on Saturday at another VMax event and I was there (though with my Gallardo rather than the Ruf GT2).

Through the timing beams the CGT got 195mph and the RT12 207mph, which were the fastest and 2nd fastest speeds respectively.

Very strange... Have you done several runs? Your test would be the first I know where the CGT is faster than the Rt12. Also, TB993TT's CGT does 0-300 in 32-33s (as posted somewhere else). Why should the Rt12 in your test be that slow? Is it the 650hp version at all? Something seems to be wrong with this video

P.S.: Also, it looks like the CGT had quite an early start (the CGT driver pressed the throttle much earlier than the other driver). But even then the Rt12 should have caught up much quicker and passed the CGT earlier than in this video...

Markus, I think the video id accurate. You can see that the CGT starts at full throttle when the RT12 is still completing the turn and it vanishes out of the camera FOV even at such a big parallel distance between them (so the distance must be HUGE from the beginning). Since they are more or less equal until 200 km/h and the distance is so great, I am surprised that the Rt12 actually managed to catch up with the CGT. And look at the difference in speed: 312 km/h vs. 332 km/h. That's huge at those speeds! The Rt12 truly is a beast.

Re: We just drove the RUF rt12 today...

TB993TT : what is your comment on your race with the rt12 ?

because the power for the cgt is from 0-293km/h when you shift to the 6th gear the car will be dead ..i raced with my brother 996tts (600hp , 830nm from 9ff) from 70 to 290 i beat him more than 6 cars after that when i was reacheing 340 he passed me with in 1 car !! that because my 6th gear !!

Gearing is not the issue with he CGT, both cars reach ca. 330KPH top speed (the RT12 24.9s version that is). The problem is aerodynamic drag, which has a cubic relationship with speed and the CGT is like a vertical wall compared to the RT12 and most 911 based cars.
From 90 kph at which these runs were started it seems, if the CGT takes off just slightly before the RT12, it will take the RT12 a good quarter of a mile to start recovering slowly on the CGT and only beyond 240-250kph will that acceleration advantage become substantial.

Looks like the CGT slowed down quite earlier.

Re: We just drove the RUF rt12 today...

I think that I hit the throttle before the RT12 did (I was concentrating on getting the car straight and steady in 2nd gear to obtain my 100-300kph data)
I don't know how much of a "drop" I had on Leon, maybe he could comment.
I have noticed that the raw numbers do not totally describe the performance of the CGT. Because the of the instant throttle response and huge 5.7 litre low end torque the CGT really does jump ahead of turbo cars.
There will be another video later in the week filmed from a 530hp 993tt who had an identical trap speed (as the CGT) but was left for dead on the initial acceleration.

This is what we were discussing on that other thread, once the CGT pulls some distance it is very hard for the following car to pull it back since it is the marginal "extra" rate of acceleration of the chase car which matters.

Getting back to the RT12, it certainly pulls back right at the end and in the video run the numbers were actually CGT 193mph, RT12 203mph.

Interesting stuff for sure and sort of confirms what the seat of the pants tells you about the CGT which the raw 0-300kph doesn't tell you - The CGT is very FAST
Edit: GT2ETR, It may look like the CGT slowed but I assure you it didn't, it was planted til well past the beams, it was that aerodynamic brick wall methinks

Re: We just drove the RUF rt12 today...

But can the rt12 lap the Ring faster than the CGT? Isn't this the true measure of a Sports Cars?

Re: We just drove the RUF rt12 today...

I doubt the RT12 is as fast as the CGT around the ring. 7:32 is FAST! (remember W. Rohl's time was 7:28!)

Re: We just drove the RUF rt12 today...

Toby, i think you were a little eager to beat me through the traps on that run, i was caught totally unaware and in the wrong gear (was about to shift down at the time) next time we'll have a passanger count us off...

    all the best
    Leon

Re: We just drove the RUF rt12 today...

    I'd say it's faster

7:28 confirmed by ??? The "official" time for the CGT is much slowlier but still impressive. Don't forget that WR was testing (and even crashing ) the CGT for Porsche, these cars weren't stock at all and WR knows the Nordschleife like his own pocket.

Ahhh, that explains the video I have never seen a video where the CGT is nearly as quick as the Rt12. Thanks for posting

BTW: how many miles did you do with your Rt12 yet? Any technical problems so far?

Re: We just drove the RUF rt12 today...

yes it does explain the video buddy, in fact the Cgt was in second gear and I was in third doing the same speed so had to accellerate in third from low revs whereas Cgt was in 2nd gear at optimum revs...i think the Cgt was worried about the spanking it was about to receive and went into Night rider auto override mode then "TURBO BOOST" a little too soon..it's understandable i suppose

I assure you (and toby correct me if you think I'm wrong) that the Cgt would not have been ahead at any stage from a standing or rolling start had both drivers been ready to engage !! in fact there's a full 10 seconds between the two from standing to 186mph...that's alot of car lengths and the gap would only be widening as aerodynamics are becoming increasingly important.

5k miles now with no problems, same service intervals as porsche's turbo except spark plugs change at half the mileage
