    For reference, Radicals are the fastest on track, they hold the record at 1:58 from a SR8, and the SR3s are lapping in the high singles.

    If I were in your predicament I would be looking at something low on HP but very very light and very simple mechanically and raw with no electronic aids at all, since that would let you run with the slow group but give you a challenge at the wheel and another aspect of car handling and dynamics that you don't get with the fast modern cars... maybe a track prepped classic sportscar, like a 964 with everything removed that is not necessary for the track for lightweight, track suspensions, wheels/tires, etc...

    Mazda MX5 would be a cheap car to play around with on the track. 155 HP/148 torque, but only weighs 2300lbs. It's available with limited slip diff and 6 speed manual. Easy to drive at it's limit, too.

    One reason I am seriously considering a Alfa 4C.

    Light, mid-engined. Good power. Paddle shift. Checked all the boxes.

    No manual for me for track use and that's why the Miata is not that high on my list.

    A shocking answer, no, it is too fast.

    At the track we run 4 groups, fast, slow, open wheel and bikes. 

    Every car I have right now belongs to the fast group, and my Club Sport is basically one of the fastest car to run on track, there really is no reason to run anything else other than just to try them on the track for a few times.

    I actually need a slow car right now so I can run the slow group. 

    Not the answer you are looking for isn't it Smiley

    But for other members that are in need of a fast track car, they are taking a serious look at the Camaro.

     

    What about a GT4?

    It's actually a 964 Turbo 3.6. Perhaps it is an investment, but it's more about me getting something that I had lusted after 20 years ago. The 918 an the 911R can also be considered as investments but i had no problem taking them out and tracking them.

    In the end, I don't feel like shifting on the track, it distract me from actually driving the track, I feel more in control when both my hands are on the wheel. 

    I am also practicing and learning passing on braking zone, (we have some asshole members that don't want to obey blue flags/lift and drag race you all the way down straights, which are our designated passing zones), a few times I had to pull out on the inside and do a proper racing maneuver to pass them. For some reasons those guys are all in Vipers and Corvettes, and hence a manual car and they simply take longer to finish up on their braking and shifting. The paddle shift  cars are a great asset in those situations, I simply threshold braking and either pull the paddles or click it myself, all the while the car is under control and I can turn in that much faster with both hands on the wheel.

    If properly driven, there is zero time penalty in a manual car under braking and corner entry.  With auto rev match, even an average driver suffers no time penalty...

    PDK makes for its advantage on upshifts (and launching, which doesn't apply on a track)

    For faster cars, a manual shouldn't affect the braking zone time at all in theory like Grant says but you can definitely concentrate on braking, trailing into corner, and fully controlling the car as Whoopsy says. 

    In my Lotus, it's cornering speeds are so high and it's engine power so low that the amount of braking I'm doing at the track is much less than the GT4.  The lack of autoblip is actually a hinderance here and I could brake even less if I had it or a paddle shift.  

    In the GT4, I can focus on trail braking much more.  I don't race so one hand on wheel during braking isn't an issue.  My friends also give point bys!

    I have tracked the 911R too, with and without rev match.

    It was nice to not doing heel toe, but not much difference except it is a lot smoother when the computer do it or me.

    The biggest difference I can feel is on turn ins, or just before, between paddle and stick. With PDK I can wait till the last possible moment to click the downshift and the car wouldn't be unsettled, with a stick I had to consciously finished up the shifting before I even begin the turn in. I am competent, but not super perfect, so there are shifts where the revs don't quite match up and it upsets the balance of the car, especially when my blip is harder than needed. 

    We have point bys too but those idiots still stay on the gas!! The ClubSport simply doesn't have the HP to drag them all the way down straights, but I can brake harder and later and corner much harder, so I had to do things the hard way.

    If I recall your track is five hours north of Vancouver. How did the GM cars and drivers get up there?

    but seriously it is not that hard to believe. Obviously they can make the emissions goals or Government Motors would not even be talking about it. Just because you guys wish it was not true does not make it false. Kind of predictable though given some American cars in the past but recently all makes have been improving. Except the Acura NSX. Lol.

    A friend recently drove a 4C and was deeply disappointed. He owns a 991.1 Carrera S and says the Alfa was the worst sportscar he ever drove. Only thing he liked was the "little Ferrari" feeling (design, interior) and the exhaust sound (for a 4-cyl.). Steering was horrible according to him and the chassis is pretty shabby for a sportscar. He wanted to get one for his wife (and himself...since he wanted the Spider, his Porsche is a Coupe) but decided against it. The (lease) offer was pretty good though according to him, dealers apparently want to move these cars over here in Germany.

    There is one in my garage and also coincided with another on an outing, to me it sounds like a 4cil small displacement sport hatchback with a loud aftermarket exhaust, the sound is all exhaust resonating and no engine and gets boring very quickly. As to the steering I believe it has no power/assisted steering?

    From what I hear the cars come with very poor alignment from the factory and sorting that out improves the 4c substantially.  However, the steering is never as good as a Lotus, which is weird because they both are non-assisted and should have great feel. 

    If for track only, I might inquire if Lotus is offering any Elise Cups with paddle shift sequential, like they do with the Exige V6 cup.

    The only Elise with paddle shift is the Elise CUP PB-R, which has been designed by PB Racing in partnership with Lotus.
