Re: Audi R8 V10 Plus (2017 model) - Short Review

Can we guess from this, if the RWS will have the longer gearing of the V10 or the shorter gearing of the V10 plus?

Re: Audi R8 V10 Plus (2017 model) - Short Review

Hello RC which tires did you put on your R8? I have on my R8 factory installed Michelin Cup2 tires, but in daily driving I do not like them. After 4000 km the rear tires are almost gone (did some Spa laps which helped a but).

    Thanks for the link.

Right now, there are some interesting rumors coming from Audi: Although it seems that the R8 successor has been cancelled (there is still not official confirmation for that, despite the fact that a couple of magazines have reported it and requested a statement from Audi but...didn't get it Smiley), there are rumors that Audi plans a GT and of course, the facelift. Now here is the interesting part: The facelift could get a V8 Biturbo instead of the current V10, which would be sad but also interesting from a power point of view. The very same engine is rumored for the Huracan facelift and the upcoming Lamborghini Urus but so far...only rumors, no confirmation of any kind.

I use the PZero PZ4 with Audi rating (R0 I think or was it R01?), excellent tire for daily driving (incl. rain) and maybe even some track laps (not many though, once the tire passes 60°C temp, the tire starts to "smear...sorry, I don't have the right English expression for that). Actually, I plan to get the Cup 2 as my next summer tire but I'm not 100% sure yet. The very limited lifetime is one of the reasons I'm not sure yet. My first PZero tires lasted double the mileage.

Re: Audi R8 V10 Plus (2017 model) - Short Review

On my "old" R8 I used to have the Michelin Super Sport, which I really like a lot. Good for normal road and on the race track. The Michelin Cup2 tires are nice on the circuit but so soft that the pickup of the slicks sticks like glue on the tires. You need to drive a lot (more than 500km) to get this stuff of the tires. See enclosed picture of the rear tires after 4000 km. You can still some slick rubber pickup.

Funny, a couple of days ago, this car was reported to be the R8 GT. Smiley

My dealer told me that the V6 has been scratched, it should have been on the market this autumn but instead, Audi put that 2WD version out. Maybe the V6 was delayed, everything is possible right now with Audi but I am certainly not interested in the V6 and nobody actually should be. Smiley This is not an engine suitable for such a car. Smiley

Shouldn't be a challenge...but with the whole environmental stuff going on right now, I think that turbo chargers and hybrids will be the future.

Where is the advantage? You can switch the AWD pretty much to RWD (Dynamic mode, ESP off = Sport mode, it only shuts off completely if you keep the button pressed) and the RWS model is not lighter than the R8 V10 Plus. Smiley

With manual (for those who really want it), things would have made much more sense. RWS with manual = winner. Since there is no manual for the R8 (and never will be as far as I heard), no sense to get the R8 RWS. Unless you want to save some money (the RWS is cheaper) but performance is also much worse than the R8 V10 Plus...or the R8 V10 AWD version. Track? Chassis is basically the same, lack of AWD advantage exiting curves, weight is same, no advantage here.

Re: Audi R8 V10 Plus (2017 model) - Short Review

The R8 may have a future after all: According to the latest rumor direct from Audi Sport, there has been great opposition to ending development of the next R8 generation. So it seems that the R8 will continue with a next generation model but it will be much closer (technology-wise) to it's Lamborghini Huracan and (hopefully) Porsche 960 brethren.

The V10 may die (or not, a bi-turbo V10 engine has entered the rumor mill recently but the bi-turbo tech will be used mainly to reduce emissions, not for maximum power gains...also to keep a decent power gap to the V12 in the next gen Aventador). A V8 Biturbo version is more likely though, rumored power will be close to 700 hp (next gen, not facelift). The V10 n/a engine hasn't been totally excluded for the next generation but it seems almost impossible to reach the emissions standards with this engine and a power increase.

The V6 is also coming with the facelift...the Audi R8 RWS is only an intermezzo (which according to my dealer has zero demand).

Rumored power of the facelift is 640 to 650 hp, so maybe more than anyone anticipated. It stays a V10 n/a engine.

So good news for R8 lovers... blush

RC, I'm willing to give you a great deal on this. It's a must-have for any R8 cultist.

Re: Audi R8 V10 Plus (2017 model) - Short Review

    R8 cultist...nice one. 😂

I am driving a R8 because it was the cheapest and most convenient path to a super sportscar and longtime dream of mine, the Huracan. I just didn't see the point of paying almost a thousand bucks more per month for a Huracan. Meanwhile, I am actually in love with the design as well, so for me, a dream has come true. 😎

Old (first gen) R8? Never liked it, wanted to get a used one and I'm so happy I didn't. New R8 is a completely different beast.

Sorry but I guess you have to give this good deal to someone else. 😉

Re: Audi R8 V10 Plus (2017 model) - Short Review

OK, here is the latest (from a direct source at Audi Sport):

    1. Decision has been made, V6 for the R8 has been scrapped. Demand for RWS is slow, price point would be similar, no need for a V6. R8 V6 was already ready to go.

    2. R8 facelift will get a more substantial design change to move it a bit away from the typical brand look. V10 stays for the facelift, "substantial" (40-50 hp) power upgrade on the way.

    3. R8 GT not on the radar right now, so it may not happen.

    4. Audi Performance Parts for the R8 still not available, pricing hasn't been established yet (rumors indicate expensive).

So the facelifted R8 would be the one to get, the last R8 ever, and with a V10 NA.

Re: Audi R8 V10 Plus (2017 model) - Short Review

"Last" R8?  It's practically the first R8 ever LOL. There's only been two of them!

This whole "last of" car trend is going overboard.

Right now it looks that way...if you are thinking about a keeper.

Next gen also seems to have received the green light since it can share most components and the basis of the next 911, Huracan and Aventador.

Keep in mind that the R8 "situation" seems to change constantly since VW Group is currently evaluating everything.

And if it will have the Performante engine, what will be in Huracan facelift?

Sounds promising. Would be happy if the V10 will stay and a 'substantial" design change mustn't be a bad thing. Is there any date for the FL claimed yet?

No, I doubt it. I think much more goes into the facelift engine development. The competition is too far ahead in the power department, the Huracan and the R8 need a "push".

I also heard rumors of a real wheel steering the facelift, which would dramatically improve track times. Cheaper than using the full aero tech from the Performante.

I'm sure they will release a model with all this stuff for less than the sum of the parts. I personally think most of it is ugly, but it is what it is. I expect an R8 GT still.

It is way too much (the rear wing is actually not bad...if you are into stuff like that but the rest of the aero package? Smiley Smiley). R8 GT may not happen after all, it doesn't seem to be worth the hassle if the regular R8 sells that bad and the insurance issues are a big deal in Germany.

I am curious about the R8 facelift with the rumored rear wheel steering: If it keeps the V10 engine and if the sound is similar to mine, I could be tempted to upgrade.

Regarding the Performance Parts: I may get the wheel set (7100 EUR incl. semi-slicks), I am also interested in the new brake pads and the carbon shift paddles (not sure though since they aren't bigger).
