Cayenne - I love the ride, but the trunk space is just very much too small. You can't stand your suitecases upgright, the door wouldn't close anymore.

Women and SUVs:  My wife loves that G and she wants one. She is not a fan of the Cayenne as she says it looks like a Hyundai (well.. her taste). The Macan and all other SUVs in that size (X3, Q5,...) she calls a "cockroach" . BUT - she likes the Range Rover (the big one), the GLS and well - the Volvo smiley

Weren't you supposed to get yours in January?

Well memorized - I have it - since 2 weeks. I will add some pictures this weekend. Smiley

So far noone among us has driven the new G-class, I assume. There si the possibility to imrpve the handling without removing its special charme. Let's wait and see.

I believe its pretty much a fact the new car will not have a ladder frame. that is already enough to make a night and day difference.

if its a well behaved car its not a g class anymore Smiley

Actually - the new car is based on the same frame. They told me this is important in order to keep some nice things like the side-pipe. It is still an old developement, even it is 10cm wider. What is new is the single wheel suspension (Einzelradaufhängung) as well as the electronics in the interior.

for all I know you cant have independent suspension (einzelradaufhängung) on a ladder frame.....either or.

on a ladder frame the axles are connected hence the rigidness in ride and limitations of handling.

    rigid-axles_ThreeColumnCrop.jpg

    Rigid-Axle Suspension

Rigid axles ensure high durability even with heavy off-road use, whilst maximising traction and enabling the vehicle’s ground clearance to be maintained. In off-road driving, the G-Class suspension, which features rigid axles with two solid trailing arms and a single control arm per axle, offers numerous advantages over road-biased independent suspension.

starrachse versus einzelradaufhängung are the german terms.

That's true of course but maybe Mercedes can handle both requirements?yes

    Re: G63 this time round

IMO they'd be better off focusing much less on off-road capabilities. It's just not how the majority of them are used.

That makes totally sense. I will be in Geneva and see some "qualified" experts, so let's see what they are saying.

I am under the same impression that the new models retsin the ladder frame for various reasons (development effort, legal reasons etc.). It is possible to use independent suspension on such a frame, especially on the front axle it is getting popular. For example, the current Land Cruiser uses independent up front and live real acle on a ladder frsme.

For the Middle East and certain other markets maybe interesting but I'm afraid this is the type of car which gets keyed in Europe. Smiley Sad but very likely.

    Re: G63 this time round

yeah right - a G with no storage heart

    Re: G63 this time round

I think it is fun and cool. No need for it but hey - why not? I can see this as cars for luxury Hotels in certain areas.

    Re: G63 this time round

Just to give new input to this threadindecision:

The Final Edition G 65 AMG is very interesting and with just 65 vehicles its certainly rare and has good chances not to lose its value too quickly. (But who knows?)yes
However, the G 65 is also very special. In my opinion the sound isn’t so distinctive or typical of AMG, as the G 63.

Now, shortly before the end of the current series W463 - my wife fell in deep love with the last edition of the G 63 AMG "Exklusive Edition". Wifes you know ..heart

This series was presented at the IAA 2017 with the exclusive color Monza Grey Magno and with 21 inch wheels. This color was also available as an exclusive color for the former SLS.

We found a new one in the Mercedes showroom of my local dealer, interior in Designo leather Black / Silk beige. It’s the model year 2018. The successor model will be presented in May / June 2018 and is considered as model 2019.

My wife wanted this car absolutely and so we bought it 1 week ago.

The first driving impressions corresponded to our expectations, I already testdrove the G 63 a year ago. The entire driving behavior is simply anachronistic but exactly that makes one sometimes laugh out loud. The entertainment value of a G 63 is simply indescribable. Believe me this car ist pure fun.

Also the exhaust sound is quite unique in its own way. This doesn’t mean extremely loud, but very pleasant and with a deep bass. More sonorous and adult instead of pupertary.
Last Saturday we were standing in a traffic jam or better slow motion in the Munich Dowtown area. We were approached by 2 different drivers, whether we do not sell the G 63. This has never happened to us with a Porsche.

At the moment, my wife is super happy with the G and I may also drive from time to time with it ..if she is in good mood.angry   It’s often only claimed but I’m sure this G is a real keeper. This powerful 5.5 liters V8 with 571 HP and with its wonderful deep grumble will not survive. Unfortunately.

The following pictures are still taken by the dealer before delivery
