Question about which gear to start in!

my father as a 997 turbo (manual transmission)

he's saying that you can start the car in 2nd gear no problem without hurting the transmission.

I say always start it in 1st gear. I've been taught 2nd gear only is reserved for when the car is rolling a bit.

I'm saying that my father is going to wear out the clutch faster because in order to start second gear you have to be in a higher rpm range rather than first gear..

someone please tell me who is correct.

    Thanks!

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

Why in the world would you do that? Redline and drop the clutch? Not my baby!

in my book you are right. if holding the clutch too much he will burn it up faster. start in first and then shift into second right away.....if thats what you fancy.

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

    ...another question....

then why is it that porsche makes the automatic cars start in second gear?

    just curious.

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

tips have a torque converter. different story altogether. the gearing is different.

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

Just about every automatic there is starts in 2nd gear, all has to do with government's fuel consumption tests (sucks that car makers has to suck up to EPA and their counterpart in Europe). It also makes the car smoother in starts.

Quite a few of the modern automatic do starts in 1st gear after a couple spirited stomps on the throttle, which never happens in the fuel consumption measurement cycle, kinda like sidestepping the consumption tests.

In the Turbo, if sports mode is selected, it will starts in 2nd but stop the throttle it will default to 1st gear starts until the car is off. In normal mode it will never starts in 1st gear.

For manual gear box the car makers have no control. But there is one exception, the infamous GM 1st to 4th skip shifts, it was programmed specifically FOR the EPA driving cycle and serves no real world purpose, but it's easily defeatd by a heavy foot on 1st gear.

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

I would just say try to avoid starting in REVERSE you may have a problem

    Just my 2 cent

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

If a car has enough torque, there is no problem starting in 2nd gear, but why would you want to do that? You are right in that you will likely have to slip the clutch more by starting in 2nd, resulting in more clutch wear.

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

Not sure about neglecting first at a stopsign but I have no problem going from first to third. When cruising the neighborhood there's no need to make a trip to second, just go directly to 3rd.

Matter of fact use 6th at 40 mph if you want. As long as you're engine is broken in and it's over 1500 rpm the torque can drive the car in any gear (on level surface).

IMO, all those gears are for accelerating like a bastard to 100mph+. Or getting maximum thrust out of a turn at various speeds.

Oops, this is the Turbo board I still have my mere 997s but I think it applies.

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

You can almost move any car in the 2nd gear but you will be hard on the tran and clutch. Why would you wnat to move in the 2nd gear anyway?

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

On the flat or a slight decline of course you can start in 2nd, but why would you want to ? For better acceleration, start in first.

The only reason I would ever start any manual car in second is if the battery is flat and I've no jumper cables; then, I would do a push start into second...

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

if you get in this car and drive it as intended you will always start in first gear....2nd ????????????what

With dead battery it is much easier to start if you use 4th or even higher gear. Car dosen't slow so quickly when clutch is engaged. More time to start when people are doing the pushing.

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

Seriously I tell my father the exact same thing as you guys are saying, but he's so damn stubborn and refuses to believe me (what the hell!!!) I'm only trying to look out for his 140k car and he just doesn't believe me.

I'm going to make him read this thread and hopefully he'll get the message.

    --- On another note ---

My dad says that since the 2nd gear is smaller than the first it makes more torque. Can someone explain.....?

I can't explain, but I can tell you this: your dad should be driving something else, what a waste

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

Believe it or not, the car can also roll off in third gear. I know this because during my test drive I was with a friend and we were talking as I came to a brief stop. As I took my foot off the clutch I realized I was in third and gave it a little gas - rolled off nicely. But....under no circumstance would I make a habit of starting in second (or third) gear.

Re: Question about which gear to start in!

Another point that hasn't been mentioned, is starting out in second gear runs the risk of lugging the engine, which is definitely not good. Engines are more expensive to fix than clutches. Certainly premature wear of the clutch should be a concern, but the transmission doesn't care what gear you start in be it first or sixth. Transmission's primary wear points are the gear syncro's.
