    OFFICIAL: New Porsche Carrera T

    From the press release:

Less is more – the new Porsche 911 Carrera T

Stuttgart. With the 911 Carrera T, Porsche is reviving the puristic concept behind the 911 T of 1968: less weight, shorter transmission ratios from the manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive with mechanical rear differential lock for an enhanced performance and intense driving pleasure. The new model’s unique appearance is based on the 911 Carrera and its engine delivers 272 kW (370 hp). The 911 Carrera T – at Porsche, “T” stands for Touring – also boasts several other equipment features that are not available for the 911 Carrera, including the PASM sports chassis as standard, lowered by 20 mm, the weight-optimised Sport Chrono Package, a shortened shift lever with red shift pattern and Sport-Tex seat centres. The rear-axle steering, which is not available for the 911 Carrera, is available as an option for the 911 Carrera T.

Every aspect of the equipment in the 911 Carrera T is designed to optimise sportiness and deliver lightweight construction: The rear window and rear side windows are made from lightweight glass and the door trims feature opening loops. The sound absorption has been largely reduced. The rear seats have been omitted along with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM), though both are still available on request at no additional cost. The result of the lightweight construction measures: At an unladen weight of 1,425 kilograms, the two-seater is 20 kilograms lighter than a 911 Carrera with comparable equipment.

The 911 Carrera T will be available from January 2018 and can be pre-ordered now. In Germany, the price will be EUR 107,553 including VAT and country-specific features.

A sporty design and unique appearance
The design of the 911 Carrera T highlights the emotionality and sportiness of the coupé with rear-axle transmission. The body parts and wheels function as clear differentiating elements. At the front, the 911 Carrera T features an aerodynamically optimised front spoiler lip, and the Sport Design exterior mirrors are painted in Agate Grey Metallic. From the side, the new model is easily recognisable thanks to its 20-inch Carrera S wheels in Titan Grey. The “911 Carrera T” logos represent another distinctive feature at the side. The rear view is characterised by the slats in the rear lid grille, the Porsche logo, the “911 Carrera T” model designation in Agate Grey and the sports exhaust system provided as standard, with centrally positioned tailpipes painted in black. The exterior colour options are Black, Lava Orange, Guards Red, Racing Yellow, White and Miami Blue, as well as the metallic colours Carrara White, Jet Black and GT Silver.

A puristic interior concept and new interior package
The appearance of the passenger compartment also has a sporty and puristic emphasis. The driver enjoys black, four-way, electric sports seats with a seat centre in Sport-Tex fabric, while the headrests feature a “911” logo stitched in black. This new Carrera T model also comes with the option to choose full bucket seats for the first time. Steering actions are completed via the GT sports steering wheel with leather rim, and the mode switch provided on the steering wheel as standard allows the driver to select different driving programmes. The shortened shift lever with shift pattern in red remains exclusive to the 911 Carrera T. The decorative trims on the dashboard and doors are black, as are the door opening loops. A new addition is the T interior package, which creates an even sportier look with the contrasting colours of Racing Yellow, Guards Red or GT Silver. These colours can be used to add visual accents on various interior components, such as the seat belts, the “911” logo on the headrests, the door opening loops or the centres of the Sport-Tex seats.

Improved weight-to-power ratio plus enhanced performance
The six-cylinder flat engine with a displacement of three litres and twin turbocharging generates an output of 272 kW (370 hp) and a maximum torque of 450 Nm, delivering between 1,750 rpm and 5,000 rpm. The weight-to-power ratio has been improved to 3.85 kg/hp, ensuring enhanced performance and more agile driving dynamics. Thanks to a shorter rear axle ratio and mechanical differential lock, the 911 Carrera T can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds – 0.1 seconds faster than the 911 Carrera Coupé. The model reaches the 200-km/h limit in just 15.1 seconds. Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) is also available as an option on the Carrera T, enabling the vehicle to reach 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, and 200 km/h in 14.5 seconds. Both transmission variants enable a top speed of over 290 km/h.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but man, starting at 110K for a 370 hp 911. That really is a lot of money for this car.

Shorter gears, yes. Mechanical limited slip diff...ok but what  percentage? 20 inch wheels and pasm.....heavy.

Did they have a meeting yet to decide to offer red, silver and yellow steering wheels? indecision

I assume it’s the 7spd with a lower final drive?  First gear must be very low and close to unusable...

20 kgs lighter but no PCM ? with PCM same weight again ? WTF ?

Re: Official: New Porsche Carrera T

I guess the lightweight construction is the lighter rear 3/4 glass and reduction of soundproofing..It’s not going to be a lot!

I'm inclined to agree - bit of a tough crowd around here.  I'm not sure what people were expecting?  A cheap 911R with back seats?  As far as parts-bin cars go, this is definitely one of the more interesting, and as Porker says - at least the aspirations are in the right direction.  Seems like it's 10k more than a base model, and some inclusive bits and pieces offset that partially.

Re: Official: New Porsche Carrera T

I really like the concept they are trying to pull, a basic cheap Carrera version of the 911R or GT3Toruing, but to me that concept is not there because of the engine, unllike the 911R and the GT3Touring, this has a turbocharged 3L with a completely different character than the purist driver's car concept calls for. Maybe if they would of come out with this car during the 991.1 cycle with the atmospheric carrera engine, it would of been a different story, and probably been a sought after 911 Carrera version as second hand later on.

    Not a good offer indeed.

A good offer? This car, no other options (other than color choices) and 89k. A word from Porsche.

For 107k? Why not get a 991.2 Carrera instead? There are tons of cars around, prices are good and you may even find a slightly used one with full options for good money.

The point of this car is exactly to offer the opposite, the antidote to a full option 991.2 Carrera.

Re: Official: New Porsche Carrera T

This car (with the rear LSD, shorter gearing, PSE, etc) will offer significant more enjoyment at the wheel than a 991S, but you have to be a manual fan or else you won't see it, and will not be as practical (no rear seats) or as fast in a straight line so its not for everyone. But I can see the appeal of both versions to different people. The only problem for me is the lack of atmospheric engine which kind of ruins the concept it was shooting for.

they should have put in the 6 speed manual from the R/GT3 and left the wheels at 19" .. that would have saved more weight.

Listen, I know we have our differences here in the forum but I don't consider you to be dumb, so you can't be seriously falling for Porsche's obvious play here. Smiley The 911 T is too expensive. Period.

This is no antidote for a full option 991.2 Carrera (hint: an antidote for a full optioned 991.2 Carrera would be a less optioned Carrera Smiley) but a clever marketing trick, which apparently...works. Smiley

Porsche could do much better, for this kind of money they could have offered at least 20 hp more (390 hp would have been nice and a perfect "middle",  a simple software update plus maybe an improved intake would have suffiiced), the magnesium roof from the GT3 RS and other lightweight parts from the GT models.

For 89k, this car would have been perfect. No options, only three colors (black, yellow, red), no comfort features, PCM optional for full money, rear seats optional for free. Trust me, it would have maybe cannibalized Boxster/Cayman sales but I doubt it would have hurt 911 sales.

Re: Official: New Porsche Carrera T

I agree it is expensive, but the same goes for the entire 991 range imo. I don't find the 911 T any more overpriced than I do the 991 Turbo S, for example. Unlike the GT-models I assume you can negotiate a decent discount on these, I can't imagine it being very popular.

I simply like the ethos behind it.

I understand what you mean and yes, you would be right if Porsche would have done this the "proper" way.

Nobody expects a 1200 kg street legal 991.2 Carrera T but at least they could have tried harder in various ways.

    Or...make it cheaper. Smiley

Sometimes, a certain product doesn't have to produce the same gain margin as others. Sometimes a product just needs to remind people about the qualities and traditions of a brand. In my opinion, Porsche has failed to do that with the 911 T. Smiley This car could have been huge. Instead, it "just" became another model in the Porsche model family.

Re: Official: New Porsche Carrera T

Does the fact that it has rear wheel steering make it interesting?

You can't have that on a basic carerra.

Re: Official: New Porsche Carrera T

I agree with all the critics. I think they missed an opportunity. Base Carrera with 390 hp and -50 kg, even if a bit more expensive would have gotten my praise. This is just a parts bin job and they should have saved the name “911T” for something better.
