Funny how they forget to mention the number of cylinders anywhere in the press release...

718 GTS specified to the same level as my 981 GTS with a hugely inferior engine is 10% more expensive. Amazing that anyone would even think of paying that kind of money for a four-cylinder beetle soundtrack sports car Smiley

That's nothing. From the 997.2 to the 991.2 GT3 there was an increase of almost 30%.

    Re: 718 Boxster

And they still still as many as they can produce. I would expect prices to go much higher still in the future.

Surely a 30% increase for significant improvements is better value than a 10% increase for something worse! Smiley

I think the 981 was a much better looking car than these 718 things - aside from the engine!

    Re: 718 Boxster

If I had owned a 6 cylinder Boxster/Cayman at some point the 4C-turbo 718 would appear to be a retrograde step.

However, for a newcomer to the entry level Porsche sportscars the current 718 is many times more then adequate. Unique styling, superb mid-engine dynamics and 365 HP are all pluses.

The range is more expensive than the premium brand roadsters because globally Porsche carries a higher cachet than BMW, Mercedes and the like.

Many of the friends who contribute often on rennteam have been lucky or clever or both to be able to afford whole garages of impressive automobiles so that the Boxster/Cayman range is snubbed. But for the "ordinary person" with a budget of 60.000-100.000 EUR the little Porsche is a very worthy and gratifying acquisition.

    Re: 718 Boxster

I agree with you totally Reginos - hence my comments earlier from individuals here who refer to the Boxster / Cayman being “a toy” or a “ little sports car” may not be meant to be derogatory but can easily be taken that way.

Yes, indeed 718 is a fine sports car in very many ways, in spite of the controversial engine still probably the best out there. Any one buying one with no experience of the n/a flat six will no doubt be thrilled, and rightly so, but for those like me who have owned one with the “old” engine would find 718 a bitter pill to swallow.

    Re: 718 Boxster

Maybe the wrong topic, but, I had a 991.2 GTS cab as a loaner this week and although I was really thrilled regarding the insane performance of the car / engine in terms of speed and responsiveness, I did not feel connected at all - NO noise from the engine in whatever mode SPE on / Sport / - plus  etc...steering nice but...yawn...suspension, ok, but ...Now, I understand why "hardcore" 911 people here turn to the GT(2,3) cars... my "little sports car" put a smile on my face (again) when I fired her up later...as to the new 718, I guess, these discussions are hopeless... I started my Porsche life with a 944S2 and at this time there already were the "hardcore 911 fellows" and the "others", well, I seem to belong to the "others" and as long as all of us can enjoy there toys in good health, I don't care in which group I am currently in...(sometimes, however, I seem to regret to have sold my 997.1...) :-)

    Re: 718 Boxster

I understand why some may prefer one platform over the other, what I don't understand is why some are not able to still aprreciate and respect the other platform. I prefer the 911 myself but I hold the boxster/cayman with the same respect, HP has nothing to do with it. Like comparing for example a Turbo S with a GT3, there is a lot more to this comparison than the HP difference, in fact in this case I would take the GT3 in a second.

    Re: 718 Boxster

When our Boxster GTS went in for its 2 year service I was  loaned a 991/2 Carrera S and I was hugely impressed. A massive improvement in every area over 991/1 in every area except engine sound and whip-crack response of the old n/a engine. If I could justify the cost to change I would have given it - and especially the GTS version - serious consideration.

    + 1

The Boxster is a fantastic . That chassis has perfect balance . It is not less then a 911, just different . Myself I also prefer the layout / feeling of the 911  .

    Re: 718 Boxster

+1.. I owned a couple of Boxsters, and would still love to have one in the garage.  I only really switched because I was doing more and more track miles and fewer on the road.
