I know Nick said this is NA and I had put an order in on that basis (might be the last NA car I will ever buy, aside from that adorable Suzuki Jimny I want!), but doesn’t this sound like the Turbo 6 of the Carrera? Can particle filter really make a NA car sound muffled like this? https://youtu.be/XV5_xURYVvU

"Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder spied uncovered on public roads"
The Porsche Boxster Spyder must be nearly ready for production, because we've spied it running around on public roads again without any camouflage. Rumors about it getting the 4.0-liter flat-six from the 911 GT3continue to swirl with its impending introduction as well — here's what we know so far.
While it's perfectly plausible that we could be looking at an extremely high-output turbo-four pot, the flat six would make this 718 Boxster infinitely cooler. And videos of it flying around the Nürburgring seem to audibly suggest that there are more than four cylinders under those two humps behind the driver. Of course, if Porsche does use that magical 4.0-liter, it'll most likely be de-tuned from its current 500 horsepower state. Think somewhere along the lines of low 400s.
Looking at the rear of the car, its exhaust design varies slightly from all the other Porsches on the road, except for a Cayman GT4 test mule we saw earlier this year. The original Cayman GT4 did not have the 4.0-liter GT3 engine, but rather, a 3.8-liter flat-six from the 911 Carrera S. It might seem slightly trivial to compare exhaust outlet designs on test mule cars, but the rear-end comparison is almost identical down to the diffuser shape. Take of that what you will, but chances are we'll be seeing a flat six in the Boxster Spyder once Porsche finally decides to reveal it.

WAY:No it won’t. It will get the 3.8 from 981 but this time with the X51 for more power. It is possible that it has been enlarged to 4.0 but it will still be based on the old engine.

Obviously they have been with Porsche for a while and know the "cracking of the whip" as we call it in Dutch... There was a time where many highly anticipated new models were obviously held short. And of course especially the Boxster line-up was most often artificially neutered... So I understand their point of view. Also, better to under-anticipate and surprise positively than the other way round...

Very true Joost - and I hope your logic is good even if it is very unlikely I’ll have either!

Now with the particulate filter and all, they will try to keep the engine families as tight as possible.

I heard the Boxster Spyder and GT4 both have a flat-six engine...

This and the fact that the 718 models all are 4-cylinder. Changing to a 6-cylinder would invalidate the whole marketing plan

And how should they name it? 918 perhaps?

Porsche would be able to charge astronomical prices if they used the gt motors and it would help spread out development costs. This is why it will happen. It is totally consistent with all their previous decisions. We can revisit my posts next year and see how I did. Been watching Porsche doing this for a long time. That gt motor is the backbone of their franchise so it only makes sense to keep spreading it around just enough to keep interest. I could be wrong but it makes business sense. The other N/A six is not being used at all any longer. Not likely they will use it in a 718.

steelested:I follow what you are saying but on the other hand, would this effect sales of Speedster?
Totally agree.
Anyway, there are people out there who has seen the engine. It’s the same block as the old 3.8. Now what they do inside is a different story. They could have made it a 4.0, or they could have just made it more powerful with X51. That part remains to be seen.
I thought Whoopsie had settled this question for us. GT4 and Spyder get a 6 cylinder motor, but not a detuned version of the GT3 motor; rather, and updated version of the 3.8 in the previous GT4.
The dealer will of course say the GT4 and Spyder may get a version of the 4 cylinder motor, so they can keep their 718 stock moving...
Exactly. A dealer usually doesn’t want customers to “wait” for a car, especially not one that will sell all by itself, like the GT4/Spyder. He preferrably wants them to buy a car NOW and benefit from a trade-in once the new/faster/better car comes out.
Of course this may be different if you have a long and healthy (aka more honest) relationship with your dealer.

At Zuffenhausen, there is real trouble over the last months...everything is unsure and nothing confirmed.
The NA 4.0 Engine (not GT3) was 99% safe for the 718 Spyder and then everything went to chaos...fact is - there are mules with Turbo and NA-engines.
At the moment there is still confusion about everything - I seems that they have big troubles with the NA-engines - I even heard today, that the NA-Engine is also dead for the 992 GT3. :-(
I´m just speaking for the German-market - there is also zero chance for me to order a 2019 991.2 GT3 here, but the ROW gets some more cars.
Also the OPC-sales people are near to crying at the moment - they heard it first on the news last weekend from Mr. Blume, that there will be no more Diesel engines - they have told there customers over the last months, that a new Diesel engine will come. The Diesel-Sales-percentage of Cayenne, Macan was huge in Germany - a total mess for them.

My dealer knows I have no interest in a 718 - I have berated it often enough - and even if I did they don’t have any new 718’s to sell! I am on the “expression of interest” register for a GT4 but not optimistic I’ll be offered one.
