Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please . .

I have put together a tentative order nearly indentical to a "launch" car I drove and liked nearly a year ago. Some differences: sport design rather than Carrera S wheels, rain sensor and auto. AC added, TPMS and heated seats deleted.

The color silver is very common, but I like it, though I would consider grey or blue instead. I have also opted for the standard interior, rather than leather, to spend my money on performance and functional options.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

    Cayman S 58,900
    Exterior Arctic Silver Metallic 690
    Interior Black Standard Leather
    M6A - Black Mats - Porsche lettering 155
    P16 - PCM 2.1 2970
    680 - Bose Surround Sound System 950
    640 - Sport Chrono Package Plus 920
    435 - Sport Steering Wheel 250
    407 19" Sport Design Wheel 1,940
    475 - PASM 1,990
    573 -- Auto-climate control 550
    446 colored wheel crests 185
    P12 Self-dimming mirror & rain sensor 69o
    P74 - Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package 1090

Posted this at the Cayman Club, but will try here as well.

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please . .

PS: there are many Cayman S available at dealers now very lightly optioned, bascially with just PPA and maybe climate control. They price out at about $62K. Do you think it's worth passing up all the options I listed about to get a killer deal on one of these remaining 07s, or is it worth waiting for 19s, PASM, sport chrono, PCM, etc.?

    Thanks

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please

If you have the money, it is definitely worth waiting for all the options you want.

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please . .

I would seriously think about not speccing the BOSE. With the engine right behind your head, it's hard to listen to the stereo when on the move. Consequently I would guess that 90% of people leave it off most of the time.

Also, the rain sensors/mirrors. Nice, but not essential in my opinion. I've never had a dazzling problem, and the wiper controls work just fine.

An option that IS really good is the PDC, but you might not have the same need over there.

I would say that speccing options can be a bit like packing for a holiday! With hindsight, I would have left off a few options on my order. But then again, I'm pretty happy with my car, and that's the most important thing - that YOU are happy.

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please . .

    Sorry, what is PDC?

    Cheers!

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please . .

Sorry, maybe I got the wrong accronym. Park Distance Control? Reversing sensors. They are stupidly useful in this country when confronted with tiny parking spaces.

Just shows how personal these options are. Auto-dim/rain sensor are absolute must haves for me, as I do lots of motorway driving. On my journey home of an evening, the last thing I need is bright lights in the mirrors, also hate the wipers going more than necessary in fine rain/spray, so this avoids constant fidgeting with the speed.

BOSE is rater disapointing, considering the massive price hike over SP+. Save the money for something truely useful lile crested seats

I actually blame BMW, who got me addicted to all these fine toys

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please

IMHO, and this is just my opinion, bring back the TPMS. In my book it's an essential safety feature. Also with no spare you want as much advance warning as possible that a tire is going down. I would also consider the manual sport seats. Not to expensive, about $750, very comfortable and they do a great job of holding you in place while playing. Finally, I'd drop the auto climate control. I'm fully capable of setting the HVAC. I didn't order it on my 987S, and haven't missed it in the least. Use that money for some of the other options.
And really last, enjoy the car and permagrin no matter what options you get.

Totally agree. Whilst other people's opinions can guide, the only way to know what's right for you is to try the options out. I also do a lot of motorway driving in all weathers and have never had a bright light issue. I guess it affects some more than others. I also don't mind the rain so much as I put Rain-X rain repellent on the screen. This again is a personal choice, but it often saves me having the wipers on at all, even in heavy rain!
Seats are one area where you HAVE to take an extended ride before you decide. Sport seats for me were extremely uncomfortable, as I'm short with wide shoulders. I love the lumbar support on the Electrics I have.
And I agree with the TPMS. One thing I wanted that wasn't available in 05.

I believe TPMS is standard in the US, but in countries where it isn't it's an absolute must. There have been quite a few posts about it on the 997 Board. I leave the tyre presssure readout display selected all the time and it is very reassuring knowing all is well. It is also extremely accurate.

Stay with the standard seats, they are very good. We had sports seats in our last car and SWMBO found them really uncomfortable - if you do get tempted go for a really long test drive with your partner before you decide. This was the main reason why we changed our last car - an expensive mistake!

Rain sensing wipers / autodim mirrors highly recommended, you sit low in a Boxster / Cayman and are more likely to get blinded or distracted by headlights behind you.

@wtsnet - agree Bose is a waste of money - it's a sports car! Sound package plus is plenty good enough. ParkAssist very good.

Don't waste your money on crested head restraints, you can't see them when in the car.

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please

I prefer the 18" wheels. Lower unspung mass, more begign movement in the sidewall and cheaper. It makes a big difference to ride and turn in.

Otherwise, personalising your spec and agonising over the options is the best part of getting a new car. With Porsche though, finding the cash is not so fun

You'll be wanting to de-badge the hood next - you can't see that when driving either

Seriously, I agree seat crests are a hideous waste of 138GBP, but for me it goes back to seeing the black turbo in Bad Boys, at a rather impressionable age

Geeezz, that one option has cost me thousands over the cars I have specc'ed it on

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please

Drop the Bose, and probably the PASM and keep 18inch but that's just me...

Color wise I like Meteor Grey

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please

Thanks. Very helpful. It looks like some drivers prefer the std. 18s without PASM, which saves money too! Also Bose not essential? Except at resale some buyers might expect it?

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please

You won't get your money back on the BOSE. Just might make it easier to sell, but that's your dealer's problem. Spec the car for yourself, not for the next guy!

Is there any evidence that the Cayman S with less unsprung weight of the std. 18" wheels and without PASM (which has its critics) might be a more agile, more satisfying car? Or does the car perform better with 19s and PASM? Or is it just a matter of personal preference? Thanks

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please

You'd have to test yourself. I've only driven a 19" Standard Cayman, which seemed agile enough. In general, a PASM car will be more agile, more go-cart like, as it'll control the body roll better. However, it does have a computer brain behind it, which has it's plus and minus points. Do long tests in each setup you're considering.

Re: Cayman Launch Car Order: Suggestions, please

Anybody out there with std. 18s and no PASM that likes his or her car that way? Prefers that setup to 19s and PASM? thanks.

I have PASM with 18's and really like. I mainly did it for the reason already mentioned, less unsprung weight. However the other benefit is that you will have greater tire options when it comes time to replace them. If you check you will see there are much fewer options in the 19's. Although I'm probably going to stick with the Michelin's. I've been very pleased with the performance of the 18's with PASM while playing in the twisties
